Hey all! Go ahead and gather round and leave some questions. I'm going to get this thing rolling as soon as possible ... hopefully in 5 or so.
3:13
Ok let's rolle.

If the Phillies miss on Harper/Machado, do the go after say Pollock or LeMehieu?
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
I don't really know that the Phillies need to just check down to fill a gap, if that makes sense. Perhaps they particularly like Pollock, say. I don't know. But they have useful players already. What they want and need is really really good players. I suspect they would pursue other avenues for achieving that, including creative trade scenarios.
(Really don't know that I see DJLM as a fit, fwiw.)

Has Manny Machado's lack of hustle and other antics impacted the contract he will receive this winter?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
How did you know I was writing a post on that, which explained why I was buying time before starting this chat?
I discussed it a bit in the post that just went up. Didn't really offer my opinion there, of course. But I do think it can matter in some regards.

Free agency is a bidding war, first and foremost, and making the market move requires motivated bidders -- the more the better. There's a reason that Boras spends so much time cultivating his relationship with owners. Front offices, by and large, aren't that moved by emotional appeals and attempts to convince from outside. They know the players and have their valuations. But getting an owner to fall in love with a guy? That's how you get the pocketbooks to loosen.
TLDR: if even one owner (or owner-influencer type) falls a little out of love with Manny, it could have some influence on how the market develops.

Biggest issue the Mets address besides the GM? Bullpen?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
You can go get guys to fill out and compete for bullpen roles. That's an obvious necessity, regardless of how far they push to contend.
3:21
I'd say the biggest issue to be addressed is how they are going to handle their three key rotation assets -- deGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler -- in the near future.
Do you build around those guys? Extend them? Trade them? Which ones, etc.

3:21
If your Arizona do you trade Goldy?
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
Might see if he's willing to do a really team-friendly extension first. But yeah, I think it's likely the right move to go ahead and get something for him now.
3:23
Mark wrote about it in his offseason outlook on the Snakes today ... discussing the idea of dealing Goldy even if they sort of try to stay competitive this year. I am not sure I am really on board with that as a realistic idea, but either way, a deal very likely makes sense. Not least of which b/c he really stands out on the 1B market.

Who do you have -Milwaukee or LA?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
When we're discussing these things in the middle of a series, I think the advantage essentially always goes to the team with the lead (if any).
I think it's clearly more likely the Dodgers win one game than that the Brewers win 2, basically.

Did I interfere?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Only if you reached into the field of play. The umpire determined that you did. Review was arguably insufficient to overturn.
3:26
I do think you could raise the burden for finding interference in the rules. Better still, change ballparks to avoid this sort of issue. I'd rather have figured out whether Mookie would make that amazing catch, miss it, or perhaps pull the ball back onto the field without the involvement of a fan.

In al central should the white sox make some moves?
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
This is a bit too general to answer, but ... it did make me want to offer the observation that, holy smokes, that division is open to an aggressive challenger. The Indians obviously remain the clear favorite b/c they have, what, the 2 best position players and 3 best pitchers in the whole division? But they have limitations. And CWS and MIN could justifiably look at things and think they ought to ramp up to mount a challenge.

Is AJ Pollock a realistic get for the RF for the Braves?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Think he has more value in center. LoCain lite.

Corbin contract estimate?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
You have to wait for our formal predictions ... still being debated ... but I am more and more on board. He is barely 29.
3:32
Real question for him and a few others is whether this sort of recent trend toward shorter/higher AAV deals is actually a trend. It may be more a reaction to the players available (somewhat older) and the lack of market competition spurred by some teams ducking under the luxury tax line. But the lux tax concept also speaks in favor of spreading guarantees over lengthy terms, so I still think we could see some surprisingly long deals.

Think the Royals could trade Sal Perez to the Braves for a few mid level pitchers
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
I think teams are going to have to pry him loose from the Royals and probably won't offer enough to do so.

Could you see Cubs packaging swarb,Happ, Russell or some combo for snell
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
Players of that sort aren't going to headline a deal for Snell.

Hi Jeff, What's your take on The Yanks bringing CC back and Happ?
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
Could imagine them liking the idea of getting good value on a return from CC for a single-season commitment. Maybe they just get that done to start and then go looking to spin off Sonny and get a shiny new arm. Perhaps Happ is something of a fallback in that scenario? He ought to draw pretty wide interest.

Cervelli - trade while there is great demand for quality catching and coming off his best year (cash in and avoid concussion issues) or keep as part of a good catching tandem?
