I'd tend to think the Bucs would be looking to cash in, but that's sort of hard to do after swinging the Archer trade.

2019 White Sox payroll estimate land around $30mm. Seeing that this team has spent over $100mm in the past, do you see them being an active player in the offseason in the big name category?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
Yes and that plays into what I was mentioning above. Sox and especially Twins have loads of freedom. Of course, they will also be wary of committing future $ in a manner that could prove restricting.
3:40
Honestly I hadn't realized they had trimmed it quite that far. Obviously it won't be 30 mil, but even with arb dollars they aren't that much higher. Could be a candidate to take some risks in FA or absorb $ in trades.

Do you really believe the new Giants GM will have that much say in what goes on the field in 2019? Or will Baer/Sabean have most of the say this offseason and groom the new GM for 2020 and beyond?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
As I read Baer's comments, they are in part going to be choosing based upon the vision they are pitched in these interviews. It certainly doesn't sound as if they have largely mapped out what they want to happen and just need someone to execute it. Bobby Evans could certainly have done that.
3:43
That said, how much flexibility is there? Not clear. You could explore MadBum trades, say, but is this an opportune time to move him? What about other veterans, who likely have more value as familiar faces who could still bounce back? Nothing they can do but wait to see how Buster, Shark, Cueto recover from surgeries.
3:44
Sorry don't think Shark had surgery. Just injury in his case.

What kind of deal is Nelson Cruz looking at?  2/25?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
I haven't really discussed him with Steve and Tim yet but I am actually thinking he'll do better. Some will predict one year. But Cruz has raked for quite some time and is very well respected in the clubhouse and for his work ethic. It's a lot to pay given the DH/1B market collapse, but we've seen other guys in generally similar situations get 15MM+ over multiple years. (Okay, maybe just one: Beltran.) I think he can get 2/30+ maybe. Reserve the right to change that first opinion, though.

Chatwood for Dex Fowler

If only b/c of the promise of stoking the rivalry, yes.

My Pads need a 3B.  Who might be available via trade?
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
Can't really give you a full market snapshot here.

Any chance the Padres go after Syndergaard or Snell or another younger, upside starting pitcher and trade some of their surplus assets?
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
Sure, but you aren't getting those players for surplus assets. You are giving up some of your most cherished young talent, if they are available at all.
3:49
And yes, that goes for Noah as well. Dude is still a massive talent who was pretty danged effective even if not at his best. And 3 years of control still left.

Would a bad contract swap of Homer Bailey to San Francisco for Mark Melancon to go to Cincinnati work for both teams.  Giants need starters. Reds get another bullpen arm
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
No, because Melancon had a pulse last year.

How much does Kimbrel get this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Will be very, very interesting. I think I may be the low guy at MLBTR. I do think many teams will think they can fix him back up, and he was mostly very good, but the control has really disappeared. Not just in the postseason. His zone% is way off of his career levels for the year.
3:53
I guess it' shard to see him dipping below Melancon (4/62), but then again, that contract was given after MM turned in another sparkling year.
Feels weird to be saying that b/c Kimbrel not long ago looked likely to break the Chapman record. Maybe teams will just roll the dice and focus on the fact he still has monster stuff.

Needed that poll to enable a quick bathroom break.
Thanks.
Also I feel like we should do more polls in these chats. Should we?
Only one way to find out I guess.
Should the chats have more polls?

Do the Cubs look to add in free agency this year? Or do they play it safe for when they have to pay everyone already on the roster
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
Always have to try to get better. And the time is ripe for them to get in on the market. Don't think the way things have shaken out they can just sit back with their core.
I also think they have some real SP questions. I have said this before and the unit somehow generally has come through, but Lester will be awfully hard pressed to repeat that magic and who knows what they'll get from Yu. The Smyly signing could pay off but also might not.
And I've heard they have competition in the division.

we should pony up for jtr this offseason right

You can say the same for several other teams, which is why the Marlins are probably licking their chops.

Billy Eppler has stated that pitching is his #1 focus this off-season.   Without exceeding the luxury tax limits, how realistic is it for Eppler to put together a staff that rival or beat the Astros?  If you were Eppler, who would you pursue?
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
There is just no chance they are going to have a staff that looks better than the Astros' rotation on paper. Esp with Ohtani out. But they can't be counted out in the division. Need to find a way to get multiple useful arms at not-crippling rates of pay and then get lucky that they work.
4:03
Mikolas shows one way to do it, and NPB hurler Kikuchi might be a good fit. Hate to see more injury risks on that roster but that's another way to get value. This market has guys like Eovaldi, Ryu, Rosenthal who are very talented but have health questions.
