They won 97 games!!!
I think that's serious.
3:29
They certainly had some things go in their direction, though. Need SPs and probably will/should get at least one quality OF. Also need to decide what to do at second (re-sign Lowrie, turn it over to Barreto, or other).

Atl gets Realmuto
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Maybe. Will be huge competition for him, though.
3:30
In fact, you could argue he's good enough that even teams that don't specifically need a catcher should go after him. Most contenders will have to pursue him at least to some extent.

Eovaldi to the Reds, good fit?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
If they go (relatively) big for a SP, I suspect it might be Kikuchi. But that's just a guess. Eovaldi is a tough risk to take for that org, even if the upside is tantalizing.
Certainly I think they have to be in his market to a certain point, but that's also the case for a lot of other clubs.

Jeff, if the Nats don't resign Harper would it stand to reason that they have a ton of extra money to go out and get some pitchers (Eovaldi?) or does it not really work that way?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
People tend to talk about contracts "coming off the books," etc, but that's not necessarily accurate. Far better to look at a team's actual spending obligations. And not only to look at the amount allocated to payroll in a given year -- Nats, for instance, have balloon payments technically slotted for Scherzer & Stras this year -- but how much actual cash they will have to spend. (Deferred money is a factor, for example.)
3:35
You also have to look at spending history. In this case, the Nats have a pretty hefty slate of contract obligations once you factor in arbitration money,as compared to recent years, even w/out Harper. But that's due in part to the somewhat artificially high numbers for Scherzer/Stras, so perhaps they have more room to operate than we think. And they could always choose to boost payroll, though indications are they won't.

White Sox starting outfield In 2020?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
Probably 3 guys who have never played for the team in the majors to this point.
3:36
One is obviously likely to be Eloy.

Would Tapia (RF), Dahl (CF), and Blackmon (LF) make a good Rockies OF in 2019?

3:37
Not that that has bothered them in the past, for some reason.
I don't know that they'll just turn things over to Tapia, but he certainly deserves to be in the mix. Would be nice to have a quality righty bat in there. In theory, that'd be Desmond, who ought to be in the OF if they are going to hold onto him.

Andujar for Carrasco Works for both right????
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
Man I don't know. Definitely pain both ways in that scenario. I have wondered if the Indians will consider moving a SP this winter if it allows them to get a really good/controllable player in the OF or at third or second. Maybe would let them stay more or less just as competitive while helping to keep the window open.

Andujar-for-Carrasco would be:

Reasonably fair, at least something to discuss (41% | 183 votes)

no way Yanks do this! (28.7% | 128 votes)

no way Indians do this! (30.3% | 135 votes)

How much do you think Andrew Miller would get on a one year deal? $7.5M?
Jeffrey Todd

More for one year, I'd think. Expect he'll get multiple.

Who wins division next yr? And how many top 100 prospects will it take to get degrom or syndy?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
I think it's going to be really tough for a new GM to deal those guys, honestly. Imagine if it's Melvin ... well, at least he has experience making these tough calls. But has he been pitching a rebuild to ownership in interviews? Van Wagenen has never been in an ops dept but is going to ride into town and ship out these guys, before he even has a real handle on who to trust in making prospect evaluations and such?
3:43
Perhaps the likeliest of the 3 to do that kind of deal would be Bloom, if he has been pitching a rebuild of some kind in his interview and that's what ownership buys into. Hard to guess whether that's the case but I think I'd be surprised if either pitcher ends up moving this winter.

2 Parter: A: The White Sox desperately need a 3B for the future. I've read that Suarez of CIN could be available with the team looking to rebuild and in need of prospects. Would a deal for Suarez as well as taking Homer Bailey and that brutal contract off the books for some good but not elite prospects make any sense for both teams?   B: Struggling to think of any past deals where a team moves a good controllable asset along with a bad contract in a deal. Does this every happen?
Jeffrey Todd
3:44
Who says Suarez is available? I have not heard any indication of that and would frankly be stunned. I really don't think the Reds are interested in moving him at all.
3:45
Least of all just to dump Bailey's contract. I'd focus your mental energy on other scenarios for CWS.

Is Ottavino the STL closer next year?
Jeffrey Todd

Seems plausible, but who knows.
DH
3:46
Let’s skip debating whether it’s the right move or not. Any chance the DH comes to NL this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
I guess there's probably some chance but I don't think it'll happen in the middle of an offseason. And there has been zero discussion of it being imminent. Guessing it's a big topic in next CBA.
