Will the Braves give Austin Riley a legit shot next year or do you foresee him as a likely trade chip to land a player like Realmuto or a frontline SP?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Sometimes when prospects get pumped up by an org -- through the media and even public statements by a GM -- you start to wonder ...are they just putting out the good vibes on this guy to set up a deal? I wonder w/r/t Riley b/c the Braves seem so much higher on him than prospect hounds. But ... they might also just really like him.
3:31
Otherwise ... I don't see him getting a shot when camp breaks, but if he's around, he'll certainly be part of the picture if he forces his way up. If they really do like him -- and, hey, he has shown a lot for his age and level -- then I personally wouldn't be surprised if he pushes Camargo/Dansby into less-than-full-time duty at some point.

Is LeMahieu a good fit for LAA?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
There's an argument that Fletcher is better than DJLM right now. Similar profile, too. They have to be judicious w money and I don't think that's a likely want to use it.
Dick Williams

So apparently we are going to "get the pitching". Do you think it is more likely we get 2-3 cheaper arms vs 1 ToR on the free agent market?
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
I read something -- not sure of the veracity -- suggesting they could add up to 30 mil in payroll. That could cover one TOR arm, but... I have a hard time seeing that much risk on one player when they really need multiple arms -- preferably in the rotation and the pen, if they really want to compete.
3:35
Now, that approach comes with its own risk of just getting some middling, still-expensive players who don't help you really get anywhere. But ... if they want to spend 30 mil, I'd rather see it splashed around on multiple players on deals that don't include much in the way of future guarantees.

3:36
you're Brodie Van Wagenen and you somehow convince the cheap Wilpon's to give you $35 miillion to spend.  Do you go all in for Machado or spend it on 2 of the top relievers (Britton/Robertson) + Ramos or Grandal?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
It would be crazy to buy Machado and not add multiple relievers and at least one plausible catcher. Behind the plate ... maybe can be patched over for relatively little. But their bullpen is haggard. Not sure there's a "Manny only" scenariod.

My stats are incredible. 300 plus innings a year double digit complete games a year. 35 starts with an awesome ERA. What would I make on the free agent market now?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
Sounds like you're about to break down from being overworked. Incentive-heavy one-year deal.
But seriously ... just answered this one to note that Palmer was super cool to me when I got his autograph as a kid. Good guy!

Is there truly a market for Kluber?  I know he has been consistent, but he's 32 and has thrown more innings than anyone over the past few years.
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
Speaking of innings-worn pitchers, yeah, no real market for ... wait what?
Dude.
Age is a factor, sure, but we'd be comparing him to Greinke if he was on the open market right now. Now, true, that deal came out of nowhere from the D-Backs. Then again, that is how these things happen sometimes and Greinke was going to get paid big regardless. Kluber is extremely valuable.
3:41
There's risk, no doubt, but you can't ignore the output and he has been durable.
Alshon Jeffery Todd
3:41
What would the Reds need to give to get Baurer or Kluber?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
I think Senzel would be of interest. Don't see CLE dumping those guys unless it gets what it wants in a trade.

Hey, Jeff! Thanks for the chat! Do you believe the teams in the market for a 3B will check on Machado first, before making a bid on Donaldson? Or do you see them potentially have a separate group of suitors? Who signs first?
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
There'll definitely be some overlap but not entirely the same market. Some teams might want to pursue Manny and could check down to JD if that doesn't work out. And it's certainly easy to imagine a decent number of clubs that would think of pursuing JD but who would pretty much sit out the Machado market.
I think it's easy to imagine either signing first ...

Which MLBTR writer was the most bullish on the Machado/Harper contract predictions?  Who was the bear?  It would be fun to read the entire discussion thread/emails between all of you.
Jeffrey Todd
3:44
So that is something we have debated doing. We certainly have the material handy, but editing it would be a bear. And I'm not sure how interesting it really would be.
3:45
Tim was probably the most bullish, and the predictions are in the end his call. But I think we all felt they were reasonable, even if they are off the charts in relation to what we've seen before.
While we're polling, let's ask about that ...
Should MLBTR publish portions of its internal T50 debate?

That'd be swell (66.5% | 494 votes)

White Sox have been connected to big names this offseason. If they were to land Machado or Harper, would it be realistic to expect them to sell some prospect capital for a frontline starter (i.e. Syndergaard, Kluber, etc.)?
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
I don't know that I really see them landing Bryce or Manny unless the market falls to them. They could always go huge with an offer but I figure CWS would need to handily beat the market to have a shot, since their near-term competitiveness is certainly questionable.
3:48
Frankly, they'd have to have plans to do more. I think it's likelier they'll look hard at some lesser players. The real question to me is whether they'll chase the market on a guy or guys they like, or whether they'll sit back and wait for value.
Yep

Farhad suggested when asked about Bumgarner "anything is on the table". How would you interpret that answer?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
"I realize I'm likely going to end up holding onto this dude and hoping he turns back into MadBum. But I'm also secretly hoping that somebody decides they have to have that Ace Workhorse and offers me something outlandish."
Anthony Rendon
3:49
Will I get locked up this offseason by the nats
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
If you read up on Rendon, you will see that he's a total enigma. He is just not interested in being super rich and super famous. So it's hard to know whether he'd even really be interested. Maybe he'd like the comfort of staying in DC. Maybe he'd really rather stay flexible with his future. It is very hard to know, but ... the Nats absolutely have to be intrigued at the idea not only of keeping him, but perhaps doing so at a fairly reasonable rate.
And indeed reports are that they have tried.

What do the White Sox do with Jose Abreu? Keep, keep and extend, trade?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Hold at this point, esp since they are talking about taking steps forward, etc.
3:53
BTW it is worth noting w/r/t the Sox, Royals, Tigers, and certainly Twins ... the Indians are giving indicating they cannot keep up spending increases. They have a huge lead on the rest of the division, sure. But compared to the teams looking up in the ALE and ALW? It looks like a golden chance.
