I'm sure there are other fits. As I say this ... I think I'm going to write a post on the bad contract trade candidates.

Can we get arenado without giving up canning or adell?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
He's not available, unless someone comes with a  massive overpay the Rox can't turn down.

Can Pillar play LF or RF? Would he be a good fit in SF, assuming Duggar pans out in CF?
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
His value is in CF b/c he doesn't hit that much but is an excellent defender. If we assume Zaidi will take the same general approach of the Dodgers, and build depth and flexibility, then I don't think there's any reason to think he'll just hand the starting job to Duggar. So it's still conceivable there's a match there, though it's far from a given.
Maybe we can also do "marginal tender candidate swaps" ... Pillar for Panik!!!

Will the Brewers be in on any of the big name free agent SPs or the big name SP trade targets?
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Well, they showed last year they won't necessarily do it just b/c everyone thinks they will or should. On the other hand, they also did try to pull off some moves that didn't come together.
I don't really have a good feel for how strongly they'll feel about pursuing upgrades there, but you have to think it's at least one of the top areas they'll strongly consider.
M's Fan Who Is Ok With Rebuild
3:44
Odds of Diaz getting traded? Personally think Dipoto should since his value is so high. Or would it be better to wait until July?
Jeffrey Todd
3:44
I don't think they are going for a true rebuild. That said, if they are even going to reset their window a bit, then yeah, I think he should be heavily marketed.
3:45
Diaz was amazing last year. Look at the rest of the market ... Kimbrel, who wasn't at his best, plus several other veteran FA types that aren't as good or young as Diaz. And the rest of the trade market looks questionable at best. Diaz would be a major target for several contenders.

Theo is feeling boxed in. How did it get to this? Theo is too smart to sign a bunch of deals last offseason if he knew it would handcuff them this offseason..
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
I don't know, the whole narrative seems to have shifted a bit too suddenly for me. Feels like there's at least some rope-a-dope going on. I'm not saying they are just lying in wait to leap at Harper, and maybe Theo is really feeling a bit boxed in. But I don't quite buy this idea that they are suddenly scrambling to stay competitive and contemplating a sell-off or something.

Better for the Angels: go big at catcher (Ramos, Grandal) and look for value on pitching, or sign a significant pitcher and get a stop gap like Suzuki or Mesorasco?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
I'm not sure it's quite an either/or. I do think they should probably forego the biggest pitching names on the market in favor of volume and spreading risk. They need multiple arms. No particular reason not to spend behind the plate, though, to get a guy you believe in. I'm not sure exactly how they feel about those particular players, but I think they could afford any of them -- if, at least, they boost payroll up to the luxury tax level.

Why do you think Yasmani Grandal did not take the qualifying offer given to him by the Dodgers? The Dodgers are going to make the postseason almost no matter what, and could have had a big postseason and made a lot of extra money.
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Because he'll go to another really good team (or re-sign with the Dodgers) for a much greater total guarantee.

Bigger surprise Chisox sign Harper or Machado or Phillies sign neither?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Phillies whiffing on both would be pretty surprising to me.

Do you think Brian Dozier's performance and injury this past season will keep him from getting a multi-year deal?  Where do you see him landing?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
As noted above, the 2B market is flooded. I expect a one-year deal. Not to say it's totally unfathomable he'd get multi-year offers, but I can't imagine they'd be at very hefty rates of pay.
3:54
I would think he'll try to land with a contender that will at least have a path for him to achieve regular time. The Nats, Rockies, Indians, A's all make some degree of sense.

I'd rather have Grenkie @ 3/$90m then Corbin @ 6/$130m. Am I crazy?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Greinke's deal is a bit bigger than that (think 95.5), but ... I mean, it was an open-market deal. Corbin's will be as well. And the Greinke contract hasn't been as awful as it seemed after it was signed or after year one.
3:57
I do think Corbin is a better bet to return value -- he's young and was really good last year. But I can understand the sentiment of preferring a shorter commitment to a much more established pitcher, even if he's also older. The fact that some teams will like that makes me think that the DBacks will be able to offload most of that contract.

What kind of trade value does Obdubel Herrera hold?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
Not entirely unlike Inciarte ... there'd be real interest. Shades of Piscotty last winter, perhaps. All talented players who teams would be glad to have, but also probably wont' go wild to acquire. I could imagine quite a few clubs liking the idea of Dubel, though perhaps some may not love his 'tude. (I don't really have a sense for how he's viewed around the game but I know he seems to rub some people the wrong way.)

Pittsburgh middle infield ... Newman & Kramer as opening day starters or will we see some additional offseason moves?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
Expect they'll add a veteran.
4:02
... to the mix, that is. Makes sense to plug a Mercer type (even if not Mercer) in there, but not to commit to everyday time for that player. Iglesias?
George
4:02
Why aren't my questions going through?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
I have to choose to answer your question. Unfortunately this is the only one that caught my eye so far. There are lots of people and lots of Q's, can't get to them all!
Oakland A's
4:04
Obviously 97 wins is a lot and was totally unexpected. With players like Luzardo coming up and the indication of spending more than usual this winter, who do you think the A's target?
Jeffrey Todd
4:05
I think they can hope that Luzardo is a mid-season option, but can't rely on it. They can bring back or find new minor-league veteran types and hope one or more is valuable, but can't remotely expect something like they got last year.
All signs point to getting multiple quality SPs. They will surely look to do so in a manner that is budget-friendly, though the A's have taken risks on perceived talent in the past.
4:06
Sometimes that works (Hill, Kazmir) and sometimes it doesn't (Country Breakfast).
