No way Harper or Machado sign with Philadelphia... given any sort of alternative option, what "high profile" professional athlete in any sport has ever chosen to sign with a Philadelphia team ???
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Cliff Lee, at least
Dan

What is the Angels big move for the offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
Man I have no clue. No indication at all to this point of what they are up to out there.

seems like very little going on, twins-wise. is your feeling that they'll make a few low wattage acquisitions (infielder; RP) and just leave it there and hope buxton, sano, etc, start approaching their potential in 2019? or could they make a splash (relatively speaking)?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
Doubt they'll waste money just to say they spent it, but they have immense payroll flexibility. Would suck to sit out the market, see some young players make strides, and end up being  bit short on firepower in a year when the Indians may have a bi of vulnerability and the rest of the division likely won't be competitive.
I think they'll do some things, just not sure what.

The Brewers got a Barry Bonds second half from Yelich (bolstered by an insane 50 percent HR/fly ball ratio), a career year from Cain, starters who outpitched their peripherals, a number of break outs in the bullpen and still needed an 11 game winning streak to end the season to catch the Cubs. While the Cubs offense "broke". Is the demise of the Cubs/rise of the Crew greatly exaggerated?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Yes, to an extent that is the case. Def think the sudden narrative shift on the Cubs is a bit questionable.

Rays maybe after Jose Abreu now? What would it take?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
Ehhhh maybe. The fact they went for Goldy does hint that perhaps the decision to bump Cron was in part just that they expect to be able to get a big bat this winter, not just b/c it was cheaper to go w Choi. Is Abreu enough of an upgrade for TBR? Would White Sox still ask for too much, esp in a year where they claim to be trying to make real on-field improvements? I see some obstacles.

So I think my fanbase is getting restless and the Beltre retirement didn't give me any relief.  Got anyone in mind I should go and sign?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
Whether or not the fanbase is restless is irrelevant. They have a new stadium opening before long (wasteful though it is) and a plan to ramp up in conjunction with that. The team is committed to JD.
ATL

Any news regarding guys like Bour, Matt Adams, Matt Holliday, Duda, etc?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
No, b/c they are almost certainly waiting for dust to clear elsewhere. Not to say some of these dudes might not be targeted for a particular bench role, but it's not going to dominate the news wire.

4:01
Belt to the Rays makes sense? what would the prospect package look like?
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
Probably the most interesting fit on BB. They'd ask SFG to cover money, though. Even those who love Belt (like me) aren't going to be clamoring for a team to give prospects and take the whole deal. Talent/production isn't really in question but the concussions are worrying and the 1B market is what it is.

I'm locked in on my prediction of Harper to the White Sox (and I'm a Cubs fan). Convince me why I'm wrong and/or give me reason to believe I could be right
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Well, I think they'd have to significantly beat the rest of the market for him to get him. And they've never given out a nine-figure contract to a FA before. So I don't feel as if it's likely, but ... top $400MM and maybe he's yours?!
4:04
I feel like Manny is a better target for them since his market isn't developing quite as well.
Jonathan J
4:04
Should the Twins try and cash in on trading Kyle Gibson with the cost of free agent pitchers being so high?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
Nah keep him for yourself. Wouldn't exactly be a top chip anyway. And I wouldn't totally assume the FA prices are on the rise. We're seeing the first guys, who are in highest demand. Yet to see how remainder of market plays out.

I just so happen to be planning on being in vegas early next week.  Is there any reason for a fan to stop by mandalay bay on sunday?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
Ah interesting question. I suspect it will be quite a bit different from the WM/GM I've been to. Every time I've gone it has been at an isolated resort where pretty much everyone there is involved in baseball, with little else around. Now you're going to be in a much broader venue and the baseball people will be spreading out more.
4:08
Not sure whether that makes it better or worse to stop in, but ... I think it'd be worth it, sure. If it's easy enough to do logistically, why not? Odds are you will see people you recognize and it can be a fun scene.
Plus Steve and Tim will be there. If you can push aside the other gawking fans, you might get to shake their hands.

Could you see Detroit targeting guys like B. Hamilton on a 1-year deal and looking to flip at the deadline?  Gotta get some impact bats in that system that has a lot of pitching right now.
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
Hamilton is a great target for a mid-season flip, b/c it's so easy to imagine him being of great interest to a contender that has a need for a glove that can run. Bonus if he hits a bit.
4:10
But sounds like the Royals may have a bead on him.
Unfortunately I have to get a move on after a few more ... hoping to do an extra bonus chat one of these days.

The A;s declined the $9 million option on Fiers. Do you think it’d be a smart move to use that money, likely less than the full $9 million, to sign Matt Harvey on a one-year contract? Harvey has more upside than Fiers. Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
Not the worst idea. Oppo to pitch in that park would be nice for a bounce back chance. I do think he'll be trying to secure a longer-term deal if he can but that's a good possible landing spot for sure.
Billy Eppler
4:13
Would you Tim, Jason, and Steven ever consider making a chart of free agent predictions individually?
Jeffrey Todd
4:13
Our individual predictions are in the contest, so I think you'll see them at some point. Unfortunately ... I forgot to get my picks in : (
Billy Eppler
4:14
Jeff, what pitchers should I focus on?
Jeffrey Todd
4:14
Maybe just do the Dodgers thing and sign up all the guys with health questions and see how it all shakes out. Cahill is interesting.
Starlin Castro
4:15
Starlin Castro for Tyler Chatwood. Does that work for both teams?
Jeffrey Todd
4:15
Believe Chatty is owed much more. Marlins aren't taking on money for him unless it's sweetened quite a bit.

Do you not like the Mets? You seem to avoid answering Mets questions, or maybe I'm the only Mets fan on this site
Jeffrey Todd

Seriously? I talk about the NL East all the time. Have to remind myself not to do it too much.
