Padres News

As involved as they sound to be whats there next move? can you give any info on the Padres ?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
I haven't seen anything that makes me feel a big move is imminent. The only recent Padres rumor I was really excited for was the one tying them (perhaps speculatively) to Moustakas, since that was my pet long-shot theory entering the offseason.
DJ
4:08
True of False?:  If the Astros were willing to give up Tucker for JTR the deal would already be done.
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
I tend to think that's true ... he'd be too good a piece to let go. Of course, there were indications they could have had Robles, and you could say the same there.
Vin Scully
4:10
All recent moves are pointing to the Dodgers getting Harper and Realmuto. Should be any day now.
Jeffrey Todd
4:10
That's awfully bold of you, Vin, but I trust whatever you say implicitly.

Does Devin Mesoraco make some sense as backup to Yadi or is that too tough of a sell for Devin?
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
Well, he isnt in much of a position to be demanding a starting job anywhere, but he would surely be aware of the risks of sitting behind Yadi. Of course, any injury and you're the dude. Not sure how Meso's market will shake out -- even if he'll get a MLB deal.

Now Brewers sign Moose, move Shaw to 1st, trade Aguilar to Yanks for Gray .
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
Why would they do such a thing?!
Glen
4:13
Which team will you see leave the basement this year?  Who will they be replaced by?
Jeffrey Todd
4:13
Padres-Giants

Have the Cards done enough to come out ahead of the NLCentral and if not, what move do you realistically see them making to get them there?
Jeffrey Todd
4:16
Yes, in that it's easy to imagine them winning. No, in that they surely aren't anything like a clear favorite. (Likely project out as the #3 team, I would assume, but not too far back.) It'll be a very closely fought division regardless. Obviously, there are still some heavyweight players still out there, though the Cards surely (rightly) feel they already got one of them in Goldschmidt. Perhaps they could still upgrade the OF but I am not sure they really need to. Another quality reliever def wouldn't hurt.
Wil Myers

To the best of your knowledge, has anyone crunched the numbers to determine how much money  teams have committed to bad  contracts? By my estimation, it has to be close to $1 billion.
Jeffrey Todd
4:19
Whatever it is, it's more than offset by the immense production they get for peanuts from pre-arb and arb guys (and those few FA bargains). It's more or less just how the game is set up.
4:20
I think what's interest is that, as the aging curve trends down and the volume of useful players increases, thus offering teams more avenues for filling their rosters with equivalent players for lesser salaries, the structure will simply have to change if the players are to get the same share they always did. We'll see whether they try to make more drastic changes to the current arrangement.
(On Myers ... my own vote is negative.)

Couple more and I have to run ...

silly question-do you think Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez play this year. I know they'll both probably get minor league deals with invites, but I'm curious...
Jeffrey Todd
4:23
Believe both intend to play, from what I've seen. Understandably, tepid interest, though I don't see why both wouldn't be of interest on the terms you suggest. I'm sure they are realistic and understand that's all they're likely to get, but I have no idea of individual motivations.

Picking some random players: Who do you think has to settle for a Milb deal? Duda, Flores, Hundley, Blevins, Wieters, LoMo
Jeffrey Todd
4:24
I will try this ...
4:25
minors, majors, majors, minors, minors, [wait til healthy and do showcase]
Tough cases there for sure
Harper

Why would I want to play for the Phillies when their fans have booed me my entire career so far?
Jeffrey Todd
4:25
The opposite swap went okay for Werth.

I dont have enough payroll to sign Lowrie, do I? I mean, our cable deal is $20m/year and the Dodgers is $300m/year.
Jeffrey Todd
4:26
I don't know, but a big one-year hit on Grandal doesn't make another short-term splash seem as likely.
Joe
4:26
What do you think of the Mets signing of Luis Avilan?
Jeffrey Todd
4:27
Nice addition on a minors deal. He was good enough that you might've expected he'd get a 40-man spot. Of course, teams can only promise so many guys of that type minors deals -- no doubt he got a wink and a nod that he was a good bet for the roster.

Isn't $300 mil a lil outrageous to play a sport? How did we even get to this point ? It's a game
Jeffrey Todd
4:28
You should see how much the owners make putting on those games!

Jeffery did u think the giants make any big trades
Jeffrey Todd

Have to think there's a good chance they cash in Will Smith and Tony Watson, if those count. Perhaps Panik though he was a NT candidate if we're being honest. The biggest name, obviously, would be MadBum, but I doubt that'd truly be a blockbuster deal if it happens. I do still expect some movement before it's all said and done.
Okay folks, I have to run ... there are arbitration agreements to be covered!

Thanks as always, talk next week.
