It'd be bold to go get him for one year, but he's got two seasons of control. Could wait until next winter to consider an extension. Honestly, though, I think the Reds and Padres would both go after a deal. Realmuto has given indication he would be interested in an extension at the right price ... supposedly he even put a dollar figure to the Marlins. He's a catcher. There are big risks in waiting for FA and he's not super young.

Who's riding shotgun with you on a road trip? dansby swanson, thor, jimmy rollins, or mike pizza?
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
Odd selection of names ...
3:48
Thor seems very cool so I'd be inclined to pick him, but he'd make me look super small and nerdy by comparison. Piazza is reputedly a good dude and I want to learn more about his bizarre Italian soccer thing, so I'll take him.

Realmuto for Ruiz and Verdugo sound about what Miami is asking for
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
That sounds like a dream return -- highly regarded C prospect and a very talented OF who goes right into the lineup with ample cheap control.
I'll guess they fall shy of that level of value, given that no team has yet stepped up to make the move.

Erik Gonzalez has never had a chance to prove himself. What will he give the Pirates?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
Not like he hasn't had any MLB opportunities. And he hasn't exactly knocked the cover off of the ball in the minors ... seems like a guy who might be worthy of more chances, but the Bucs have quite a few interesting young infielders.

Would 4 years and $70m get it done for Kuechel and bring him to Cincinnati?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
I suspect it would. Not sure whether the Reds have any interest in that sort of arrangement. They have obviously swung some deals and added some salary already. Much of it is in the present season, but they did go for Gray and have to think about rising arb costs in the not-so-distant future. Plus other needs that will inevitably arise. It'd be a pretty substantial risk for that org.

Who are some realistic closer/setup man arms that the Braves could target either via trade or free agency?
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
Giants lefties (Smith/Watson) would both be nice pieces for that pen, esp if Minter is used as the closer. The other guy that comes to mind is Jose Leclerc, the young Rangers fireballer.
Jake DeGrom

I thought the Mets hired my agent to be GM so they could lock me up long term?  Where's my extension??
Jeffrey Todd

No, Brodie is (in theory) conflicted out of negotiations. Of course he has still stated publicly that he hopes to work out a deal, which seems a bit at odds with the notion that he is not going to be involved. It's a weird situation. I'd personally guess that it's fairly likely they do find a deal, but deGrom can and should hold out for a huge amount.

Whether the Padres get Harper or not, who do they line up with for moving a corner outfielder?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Another spot the Giants could find some pieces. White Sox will be on the lookout if they don't get Bryce. Orioles don't have a need, per se, in the OF but who knows if Elias really likes the guys he inherited. Likewise, the Tigers would surely be interested in taking some chances on young, reasonably talented guys.

Selected by me. [Insert standard disclaimer regarding the fact that I cannot even glance at all of the questions, let alone answer them all.]

Tony Kemp

i've done enough to prove I belong in the bigs, but the Astros seemingly have no space for me. Where do I end up?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
I mean, I get the idea that he doesn't fit now that they have Brantley and Reddick in there as lefty bats. But if you assume that Brantley spends some time at DH, it begins to make more sense. I don't think Gurriel is going to play every day at first base. Remember that Kemp was utilized very specifically against righties last year; they may intend to use him in such a limited manner. Pairs well with Marisnick.

Do Gregerson or Cecil get cut before spring training?
Jeffrey Todd
4:08
Why wouldn't they at least see how they are throwing in camp? I think the Cards would be willing to just dump one of those guys if it was clearly not working out, but there's a reason they gave both significant dollars and it's well worth seeing if they can make it back.

Do you expect The O's to ship out any of the few remaining assets of any value they have - Givens? Bundy?
Jeffrey Todd
4:11
Givens could be dealt at any time if the right offer comes along. Bundy will be allowed to try to recapture value. Likewise Bleier. Both would be clear deadline pieces if they pitch well and stay healthy.

Why would any of those guys go to NY if they won't actually get a rotation spot, though? I assume if their market situations end up being that bad, they'd at least choose a place where they'd be guaranteed a starting job.

The funnest in baseball! (On paper.) Unless you prefer juggernauts slugging it out with an upstart challenging them (AL East).

Really he's just still stuck in line behind Machado, who is totally standing there at the counter taking forever to decide what he wants.
