Wouldn’t 5/55 feel like a bargain for Severino?  What pitcher of his talent can you get ages 25-29 for that price?
Jeffrey Todd
4:27
Well sure, if he was a FA he'd get quite a bit more. But that's not really the question. It's connected to what you actually have to pay him in 2019 and the 3 arbitration seasons that follow, combined with the risk of committing to him for those years and the ones beyond it. That's why these kinds of extensions get done.

Jt realmuto didn’t look too happy at his press conference, why?
Jeffrey Todd
4:28
I watched it, actually, and didn't get that impression. Thought he had a very workmanlike presentation that suggested he was going to bring an all-business attitude. I hadn't really seen him much in front of a camera before, so I was actually impressed.

What would a Rendon extension look like?
Jeffrey Todd
4:31
I do find it interesting that people routinely toss around well over 200 for Arenado, but I think would be stunned if Rendon got anything like that. Certainly Nolan has the flashier glove and way more power, but once you adjust for park effects, they are pretty similarly valuable players.
4:32
I think Rendon really flies below the radar -- clearly by design, as he hates the spotlight. Arenado seems like an exceedingly solid guy all around, but is not afraid of being highlighted, more demonstrative, etc. That has an impact on perceptions ... also makes him a bigger gate/merchandise draw.

It seems that the general perception amongst MLBTR writers is that players have a legitimate gripe about the state of free agency and owners are being tight pursed. Isn’t the revenue split close to 50/50, which meets or exceeds other major sports??
Jeffrey Todd
4:34
The league and union have different numbers. Bottom line is that payrolls aren't growing and teams are putting far less long-term money on their books. The free agent system isn't keeping pace with revenue expansion, essentially.
4:35
That doesn't necessarily mean the players can't push the system to pay out closer to 50/50. Taking shorter-term, higher-dollar deals ... pushing for increase in minimum salary ... pushing for arb bumps (or taking more cases to hearings).
4:36
But the players obviously want their best and brightest to be able to command long-term, high-dollar deals. It's baked into the system. If that is falling off, it's of obvious concern to them. I am not going to sit here and say it's not fair, or something, but as an observer of the market I can say the balance is shifting and that the players probably want to do something about that.
Gonna grab a couple more and then run along ...

One year or multi year deal for me this year?
Jeffrey Todd
4:38
I think he could still be attractive on a two-year deal. Part of what's going on here is just that you don't want to commit to Moose if you still think you can get Manny,  right?

you seem pretty into the polls lately.  shiny new toy, or actually valued input?
Jeffrey Todd
4:38
Well I only did one real poll, but I find them interesting.
4:39
Rendon and Arenado

Nolan is significantly more valuable (55.2% | 191 votes)

Cards need a closer.  Not sold on Hicks.  Why aren't they going after Kimbro?
Jeffrey Todd
4:41
From the comments the other day, sounds like there are some that think it should go to Carlos Martinez. I feel like that's a bit premature but...
I do agree they could stand to boost the relief unit, for sure. And every little bit will be needed int aht division.

Give us one bold prediction for the rest of the "offseason"
Jeffrey Todd

There will be more significant trades during spring training than anyone can remember before.

Did he buy some marigolds from the 50% off bin tho?

How can we be angry at the teams when we don't know what kind of offers Manny, Harper, Kimbrel have gotten?
Jeffrey Todd
4:46
I agree with that, generally. The only asking price we've even heard about were pie-in-the-sky numbers from Kimbrel and Keuchel. We don't know the full story yet.

What was your favorite baseball moment that you've witnessed live (TV or in person)?
Jeffrey Todd
4:49
I was sitting on top of the O's RF scoreboard for this ...
4:50
Have to realize, too, that it came amidst a 9th inning rally against the hated Yankees when their fans were invading Camden. It was the most YEESSSS (base hit) NOOOOO (runner hung up) YEESSSSS (nobody is at home plate) NOOOOOOOOOO (he fell) moment I've ever experienced.
We'll end it on that! Ha. Thanks everyone.
4:52
Oh dang ... found the gamer ... it was actually the 12th inning. Tagged out by Aaron Boone! https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-2003-08-17-0308170262-story.h... Good memories. Ya'll have a good week!
