It's fine but it's mostly the same thing Alderson has been doing. Hope the rotation stays healthy and fill in the missing position-player/pen pieces. They didn't increase payroll. The only premium talent they added was Edwin Diaz, and it cost them a premium prospect piece and the absorption of the Cano salary.
4:01
Not to say it can't work -- if the rotation is pitching near its upside, this is definitely a potential division winner -- but I don't really buy into the rhetoric of "we are now an organization of action" and all this.

Who has a higher chance of a sophomore slump season, Acuna or Soto?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
I'd say from a hitting perspective, Acuna has a greater possibility for the floor falling out, just b/c he doesn't have the unreal plate discipline that Soto does. Ronald also has a higher D/baserunning floor and a much higher overall ceiling.

Is the death of the mega contract a blessing in disguise for me? I could use it + increasing revenues to lobby for changes to the next CBA regarding minor league compensation, arbitration, minimum salaries, etc. to help the 99% of players who can’t shoot for the stars in free agency.

I literally just said this on a radio show this morning. It's a real possible option the MLBPA should consider. It is not what the union has pursued historically. It'd mean a lot of tradeoffs and be complicated, but it seems worth considering. I was personally surprised at the latest CBA for failing to make a big advance in the league min salary.

Am I going to have to settle for a minor league deal with a lots of incentives?
Jeffrey Todd

Can't see why that'd be the case.

Early prediction for the biggest name moved at the 2019 trade deadline?

Greinke?
Or if he doesn't get a deal and things fall apart for the Mets ... dare I say ... deGrom?!

Are there any teams that you feel are legitimately justified in not trying to improve their chances to win games by making some signings or trades this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd

Marlins and Orioles are the clearest examples

80 wins predicted by Pecota for the Cubs.  Expecting another injury plagued year for Bryant and Darvish?  Regression from the starting pitchers?  I fail to see how this team does not win 92 plus games if relatively healthy.

Tougher division is going to eat into the win total. The rotation has some age and health risk. There are some roster spots that are less than overwhelming. Some of the stars have some variability in their possible outlook. I am not totally surprised to see that kind of projection, though I would take the over. I don't think you can look at that roster, next to the rest of the good but non-Dodger rosters in the NL, and see it as a clear 92-win team though.

Interesting that you guys really don't expect a deGrom deal. I guess I'm a bit more optimistic, not that I'd categorize it as likely, just b/c I think there are indications he would like to do one.

For the record, I'd love to answer more questions. Do my best!

What are the Cubs options with Morrow now out for the opening of the season?

Hope they find buried treasure while digging out the foundation to expand the visitor's clubhouse.

Isn't it time for Almora to take CF full-time?

He doesn't really look like a full-time guy to me.

Anthopoulos just came from the Dodgers, who have been going for low-budget relief gems for the past few seasons. Zaidi just went from LAD to SFG and is now pursuing the same strategy.
I don't disagree entirely, as I think they have some leaky spots (though also some potential for utilizing the young SPs), just pointing out that it seems to be part of a deliberate strategy.

Mike Ford. Greg Bird. Luke Voit. Do you need 4-letter names to be a 1st baseman in the NYY org?is this related to... Babe Ruth?

Matt Klentak was on the podcast, like our second-ever show, and the audio got messed up somehow. He did a second appearance. That was very cool of him.

What would a Zach Wheeler extension look like? 3/45? What do you think he'd get if he was a FA today?
Jeffrey Todd
4:21
Don't see why he wouldn't have been considered in Eovaldi territory (4/68). Pretty similar overall profile. He could out-earn that if he has a really nice follow-up season so not sure I see him settling for 3/45

WAR is an overly complex and flawed system for lazy analysts to put a win value on every player.  It's disgustingly overused as if it's fact.  It's wildly inconsistent and not even calculated consistently.  Do you honestly believe that having Bryce Harper on your team only attributed just over 1 win last year? He was fantastic.
Jeffrey Todd
4:24
There's some truth to that. It comes with a big error bar. It still is useful to be able to speak in terms of how many "wins" a player might be worth from a true talent perspective, though, and I don't think WAR is useless. But it is often mis-used.

I'll tell if you if you tell me first what will happen in 2019.
He has a massive band  of possibilities after the arm issues.
