Doesn't mean they should pay whatever he's asking right now. They should still look at all alternatives -- remember, they hardly had reason to be planning on landing Manny -- and tamp down the price on DK (if they are interested).
3:49
I would say that SDP line up very well with him, though certainly the preference would be for as short a deal as possible. I'd have probably felt similarly about the White Sox had they landed Manny. (Now, not so much.) Otherwise, in terms of realistic (free payroll/need) teams, it's tough ... maybe Giants if they land Bryce, but it's hard to see much more $$ landing on those books. A team like the Jays could get in at the right price but we can safely assume they'd be seeking value. Difficult market for him still.

How serious do you think the Twins are about Marwin? I sort of think pitching would be more important, or are they at a point of just letting the staff they have battle it out to help determine what kind of future those guys really have?
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
Pitching additions only make sense if they make a big improvement. They already signed Martin Perez, for whatever reason, and have enough passable arms.
I actually think Marwin is a great fit. Good complimentary piece at every infield position and offers protection if there's an injury or someone falls apart.
3:52
With a few guys slated for FA, Sano perhaps sliding to DH when Cruz leaves, uncertainty of timeline for top prospects ... he also makes sense for the next couple seasons.

Why are the White Sox all of a sudden out on Harper? Is Hahn just trying to keep things quiet? He was quite angry with all the info leaked on the Machado negotiations.
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
Perhaps they bailed on that when it seemed they had more traction on Manny and they went full bore for him? Maybe the market has already passed what they were willing to spend?
SF Nation
3:53
Any bigger name you see SF going after if they miss out on Harper?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
Whatever player is dislodged by Harper signing (Nick Williams? Adam Eaton?) might be a target. Not sure I really see them just checking down and chasing the next-best thing, though. I think Bryce is sort of a one-off pursuit.

I know it's crazy to think about, but if the Red Sox don't think they can extend Mookie before free agency, would they consider trading him between this year's trade deadline and next winter to get something of value for him? Instead of losing him for nothing.
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
By that logic, why would any team acquire him? It'd mean giving up great young talent for nothing. What you get is a season+ of immense production. Unless the Sox' outlook changes drastically, it's hard to imagine it making sense to deal Mookie.
3:59
Oh man ... terrible news. Red Sox reporter Nick Cafardo has passed away. That's awful.
4:00
Just 62. RIP Nick.
4:01
Well that sucks. Obviously we referenced his reporting quite often at MLBTR. Keeping his family in our thoughts. Let's cover a few more questions here.

4:02
If you were Rick Hahn, where do you go from here?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
I think they need to more or less turn back to the internal developments. There may still be some opportunities to move the ball forward for 2019, but they have to keep disciplined. Chasing Keuchel, say, unless it's at a really attractive price, seems questionable. I still wonder if there aren't some intriguing trade possibilities out there. Whether that means picking up unwanted guys from other teams or maybe -- maybe -- dangling Carlos Rodon.

Will Luhnow find a taker for Reddick?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
It's conceivable. I wonder if they won't still manage to stay creative with putting the initial roster together. Arguable 'Stros would be better off with cheaper guys keeping the seat warm for Tucker. Then again, they added Brantley despite already having Reddick. Don't imagine they'd want to pay down salary to move Reddick, but at the same time, what teams really want to come up with the coin to cover his remaining salary?

4:08
Why wouldn't the Pad's take a chance with Bucholtz?  Not much pitching left in FA's?  Or who should they target with their glut of OF's?
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
I do like the idea of the Pads going after injury risk guys, in theory, because they could kind of get what they can out of them at a cheap price and fill in with young guys (also generally risky assets). It's fine that they have a sort of a high-ceiling/low-floor season in the first year of the Machado deal. Embrace it.
4:10
On the other hand, those kinds of players want 40-man spots, and the Pads have guys they don't want to just give away. As I said, I imagine they are sorting through all this now that they know they actually landed Manny.

Fowler rebounds?
Jeffrey Todd

I think he will.

Tim said Trout would sign a 10 year, $400 mil contract now? Your take? If you're the Angels,  why wouldn't you do that immediately?
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
Didn't see exactly what Tim has opined on that, but I can imagine that sort of valuation on a right-now extension. I think in theory Trout could earn a lot more in FA, but there are risks to getting there. Question is whether he has any interest in committing to stay in LA at this point. I'd guess not.
Von Purple Hayes
4:13
Does Ryan Madson find a home?
Jeffrey Todd
4:13
I don't know exactly what his specifications are. It's said he's being picky. From a baseball perspective, 100% he should be on a roster.
Giants
4:15
The writing is not on the wall. Thats total bs.
Todd
4:15
These chats you host have no substance at all. If you think there is writing on the wall for a somewhat forced retirement of Bochy then you are the worst baseball analysis. Don't give me that bs about how older coaches can't relate to younger players either. Post this you coward.
Jeffrey Todd
4:16
I said the writing was on the wall regarding his time with the Giants. They elected to lock in for 2019 even while undergoing FO change, in which they were searching for a whole new-look regime. I can't imagine many circumstances under which he was going to be the guy to carry the baton for years to come thereafter. That's all. There's no disrespect for Bochy or even an opinion on his present abilities as a manager.

Joe Peterson.   Possibly

*Joc ... but yes, agree, potential target.

Do you like the K.C. plan to use speed and defense. Seems old school in the days of the three run Homer to win but what is wrong with small ball.
Jeffrey Todd
4:19
Yeah I like the idea of experimenting for a team in their situation. Playing to the home park. Creating a fun brand of ball to sell.
I don't think it's really going to change them into contenders, obviously, but it'll be interesting to see the results.
James Franco
4:21
Machado barely cracked the top 10 list for offensive numbers, how do people consider him a superstar on the same page as Trout, Betts, and Lindor?
Jeffrey Todd
4:22
Those guys are ahead of him right now, agree. Doesn't change the fact he was worth 10/300, though.
