Kind of tired of hearing that the Cubs have no money! They really should be in on Kimbrel right????
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
Dude I think that ship has sailed. (That ship being the Cubs spending money this winter.)

Lol the mets. 4th place team
Jeffrey Todd
3:36
Brodie still says they like their chances. What else would he say. But really, let's bear in mind that the Mets have a pretty danged hefty ceiling. That staff could be ABSURD. If they have good health fortune on the position player side, and a few guys stay on the positive side of their reasonably anticipated output, it could look like a powerhouse. There's loads of uncertainty in there and plenty of downside, but I don't dismiss them out of hand at all.
3:37
(That's Brodie Van Wagenen, the Mets' rock star GM.)

Who gets a MLB contract besides keuchel kimbrel and gio ?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
It would be crazy for Maldonado not to get one. He was the guy the fricking Astros targeted at the deadline last year. Esp with Salvy now hurt that's all but inevitable. Some of the relievers, too ... Sipp but especially Madson. Probably at least one or two more but that's off the top of my head.
3:39
Jones, also.
Although bear in mind, some guys will take a minors deal if it means more earning potential.
BREAKING
@BryanHoch
now
Jacoby Ellsbury is once again running on flat ground. Aaron Boone said that the Yankees will decide soon if he is ready to come to Tampa for baseball activities.

has any one shown much interest in Kuechel? Are medicals scaring teams off?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
The situation is so similar to Arrieta last winter. He has still been effective recently. Isn't that old. But the health questions, velo dip, etc ... just big risks that take a big cut from his value. Remember Arrieta didn't sign until like March 11. Still got 25 mil annually for 3 years.
(Not saying the two players are perfect comps. Just that there are quite a few similarities.)

Will Salvador Perez be out all year
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
If he needs Tommy John surgery, yes.

Biggest FA addition to open new stadium in Arlington in 2020 is...
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
Well let's see what the needs end up looking like -- and whether the roster seems like it's worth adding major pieces to. But starting pitching is all but certainly going to be in play. Sale, Cole, Verlander, Wheeler, MadBum ... fun class.

Whats next for the Phillies?  They still are about $50MM under the threshold.  Do they try to sign Kimbrel?  Kuechel?  Make a trade for a P?  Or stand pat?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
You mean the max penalty threshold? Doubt they'll end up running up to it. That'd mean not only taking on a huge amount more now, but likely also in future seasons. They have splashed some cash of late for sure, but I don't think they are just going totally out of control.

3:47
Should I move an outfielder?  Who should I send packing?
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
Probably, but remember the Dodgers have managed to keep way more guys than you'd ever have expected them to for years. Easy to see a logjam but they also have a few early injuries so could just wait and see.

Best guess for a Didi extension?
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
That one does not occur.
3:51
Just ... would they work it out now, while he's rehabbing? If not, then when? I think circumstances conspire to make him a FA. Possible they work something out at the very end of the season or perhaps just before the opening of the market. But the Yankees don't do a ton of extensions.

I'm starting a rumor that the Phillies are working on trading for Cole Hamels.

Just like every March, plenty of bargains to be had on the free agent reliever market.

It's tough not to see the late entries of LAD and SFG as essentially pawns to get Philly over the $325M mark, right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
I don't think so, at all. You think their top execs fly around on private jets and raise fan expectations and such just to force the Phillies to spend more and help out their buddy Scott Boras?

Is it me or does it look like the Mariners have a glut of OFer's in the future? Haniger, Smith, Santana, Lewis, Rodriquez, Kelenic?
Jeffrey Todd

If lots of things go very very well, sure. That'd be classed as a good problem to have, if and when it arises.

What are your thoughts on the Mikolas extension?  Is he a 1 year wonder?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Cards know better than I would. What I mostly think about it is that it tells us they really think he's more than a one-year wonder. Obviously that's always the extent with an extension, but we know it for many guys.
3:57
From a pure market perspective, I was pretty surprised on the whole. Rather hefty overall payday. Not to say he couldn't have secured a big deal in FA, but ...
You want a jaw-dropping bargain fro an extension? Much as I loved the Nola deal, this one takes the cake: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/12/indians-to-extend-carlos-carras...

What sort of a "significant trade" might happen this month? Any names you feel could be in play?
Jeffrey Todd

I was working on just such a post this morning when news started happening.
