Giants relievers (esp Will Smith) are my favorite pick but there are others. Not any I'd call particularly likely individually.

Can we lock up Rendon now, who is better anyway. I'm not bitter. You are.
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
Ha. Yes I think that's very possible. Real question remains what Rendon is seeking. Not "initial asking price" but in a bottom line kinda way. I wasn't surprised to hear Altuve money. It's a fair comp. But will he go for less b/c he's really comfy in DC and doesn't want to go through free agency? Perhaps.

I'm sitting here in Portland a-twiddlin' my beer-infused thumbs, waiting for a team.  How long will I be a-twiddlin'?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
Doesn't seem a near-term possibility, honestly. Rays stadium situation is the most promising thing for cities that want a team, but there's big TV $ there and perhaps they'd be likelier to stay east? I don't think expansion is going to be considered for some time.

Really? Someone asks a question about a sandwich, and another ask for the NL East winner, but I can't get a thought about which team is most likely to falter?
Jeffrey Todd
4:05
Not sure how a division fav ? is different from one on teams faltering. But why do you have to make me feel bad about remembering Kent Hrbek and thinking about a delicious sandwich?
In seriousness ... ya'll I just answer these things as I'm able. Try to take a fun one from time to  time. And I try to stay as late as possible to cover all topics of interest.

What information there is of Cargo, still not signed
Jeffrey Todd
4:06
No info. I would not be surprised at all if he ends up with only minor league offers. Felt that was possible entering the winter.

How doe the Marlins have more votes than the Mets...just a disgrace. No respect.
Jeffrey Todd

I think we can safely dismiss the Marlins votes given the non-scientific poll construction.

BREAKING EXCLUSIVE: Video shows Giants CEO Larry Baer dragging wife to ground in San Francisco plaza
4:08
That ... that is crazy.
Link if anyone wants to read but this is mostly a story to keep an eye on for now: https://www.sfchronicle.com/giants/article/Video-shows-Giants-CEO-Larr...

(Point there being: there are obvious gaps in what is known. I just wanted to pass along the info but have no opinion on it at present.)

What does an extension for me look like? They buy out my last prearb season and 3 arb years for $50M and then tack on 6 years at $30M each (matching Machado's AAV)?  Total deal, 10 years, $230M.
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
Well that would be a totally new kind of deal, honestly. He's a 2+ service class, pre-arb guy. College player so he's almost 25 already. I think that overshoots his value in an extension scenario. Though maybe to get a deal done they would need to break the mold.
4:13
Pre-arb record is currently held by Mr. Trout: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/01/extension-records-pre-arbitrati...
Who's on first?
4:13
Is it time for Smoak to be traded and just give Tellez the at bats?
Jeffrey Todd
4:13
He's on my list!
4:14
I think they'd be up for a deal if they got something they like in return. If not, though, there's no rush to push him out the door. Teams in that situation sign guys like that for the kind of money he's making all the time. Jays are doing that with pitchers.

What would a Frankie Lindor extension look like
Jeffrey Todd
4:18
Something more like that Bregman concept above. He's got a huge salary in his pocket already. Getting to that first arb year is honestly huge. Now, even if he breaks his leg and misses the whole year, he's getting another ten mil in 2020. And if we're being reasonable, there's no realistic way he isn't going to earn tens of millions more. So why sell yourself short? You only do the deal if you get something massive put in front of you. We're talking about a guy who is on the upswing with burgeoning power AND is a premium defensive SS, with youth on his side? Don't see Indians getting him to bite on something they can afford. They have worked their magic to such an extent with other guys, though ... who knows.

How do recent signings affect potential Mookie extension?
Jeffrey Todd
4:20
He doesn't sound at all like a guy that wants one, does he? A year further on than Lindor. He smoked the Red Sox in hearing last winter and got them to go to 20 in year 2 this year. My guess is, if he's willing to talk, he'll basically spit on the Arenado deal. Certainly he'd command a longer term. And he has reached heights Arenado has never touched.

Couple more and I must be moving on ...

Ok- we can fully rebuild now?

Not a strip-down effort, but yes.

Can the Pirates rotation lead them to a division? They have been a thorn to NL Central teams the past few years.
Jeffrey Todd
4:26
I honestly think they are a plausible threat, yes. Division is totally wide open. They have some room to boost spending in mid-season, I'm sure. (They've hinted it and it makes sense compared to past payroll.)

Did you just call Andrew McCutchen "a superstar"...???
Jeffrey Todd
4:27
I was saying he was a superstar who now isn't one, but is still good. Thought that was obvious from what I wrote.

Any chance Indians can work out a 3 team trade to land Castellanos?
Jeffrey Todd
4:28
I really don't think anyone is dying to get Castellanos. But he is on my list of possible trade targets.

Are you disappointed that the White Sox failed to sign Harper and/or Machado?
