Doesn't matter. Both will play and time will be allocated based upon who is producing and particular game needs (particularly, each team's starter).

Paddack, gotta be then opening day starter, right? Most strikeouts in the spring.
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
Yes just b/c it would be fun. If you're going to throw service time to the wind, may as well put him right on out there and show everyone just how ballsy you are willing to be.

What kind of contract can I expect after this season?  Will I return to the Sox?
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
My initial feeling is that Tim is a bit bullish on X in saying he has 200+ mil juice. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/03/2019-20-mlb-free-agent-power-ra...
I'd be more in the 150-175 range at first blush, though I haven't examined that in great detail.

I know it’s just spring training, but the Padres are playing pretty well, including a lights out bullpen and some hot streaks from the young guys! Any chance this momentum carries over into the regular season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Write this 100 times on the blackboard: "I know it’s just spring training"
3:44
Look, you should totally get excited if you are feeling it. Just remember ....

With the new single trade deadline, is it possible trade activity will actually decrease as fewer teams will know for certain whether they are sellers or not?
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
Yes I think that is possible ... really though it wasn't until recently that the August trade period blew up in relevance. I also was wondering today about how August will work. Should be interesting to see. Some teams that decide not to sell
(submitted too soon ... 1/)
3:47
... will be sitting on expensive short-term guys and will want to dump cash. So they'll go on waivers. Depending upon how the waiver rules are tweaked, there could be stronger or weaker incentives left in place to actually place a claim. Could be we end up seeing a decent number of straight claims in August.

Did the White Sox completely fail this offseason in not getting Harper or Machado?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
No and yes. It wasn't imperative that they landed one of those guys. But they really seemed to structure the winter around doing it ... and then sort of curiously weren't willing to spend to get it done even though the bidding didn't go absolutely crazy.
3:51
They committed what 13 mil to Jay and Alonso, in large part to help woo Manny? Could've saved that and spent less on, I don't know, Granderson or Span and LoMo. That 13 mil, with interest re-invested, would've added up to like a whole year of Manny's contract had they expanded the guarantee to the 9th and 10th seasons. So ... it's a bit odd.

Are you excited for all the overtime you will have to work on July 31st this year? Seems like this year's deadline could be significantly more difficult for MLBTR writers than the past few.
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
Much like other major market rule changes - the qualifying offer, say -- I think it'll take a year or two or three for the market to adapt. We really don't know how it'll all look when the time comes. But I agree that the stakes of SELL/BUY/HOLD at the end of July will be much higher and will really ramp up the deadline drama. It will be more insane than it already is.
Bobby Bonilla
3:55
I have something to say about this...
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
The whole "bonilla still getting paid!" thing comes from a renegotiation of the deal. As I said, though, I was limiting my scope. I'm sure there are some other highly regrettable contracts - Mike hampton? - that'd rate.
Evan Gattis
3:58
Evan hit ball good. Evan hit ball HARD. Where Evan go?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
I don't know but I agree with you -- we need this man in the majors. I remember seeing him in person, I'm pretty sure it was out in Colorado, in his rookie year when he was just starting to catch everyone's attention. He made the catching gear look like that of a child. No batting gloves. Looks like he just finished up a 12-hour shift at the local lumber yard. Love love love him.
4:00
All that said, it would also be amazing to see him launch 89 home runs in the KBO with epic bat flips aplenty.
Hunter
4:01
When talking about some of the worst contracts lately I feel we only hear about Miggy and Pujols. Why not Chris Davis's awful contract?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
Um. Didn't we just cover this?
Eloy Jimenez
4:02
Does the rumored $100 million contract make sense considering I've never taken an MLB at bat
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
I have NO idea if it is remotely true. But that would be beyond unprecedented. Really don't know that I would see any merit in it for the team unless they were getting 2-3 option years as well. Otherwise you're promising all that so you get one extra season.
4:04
(Those that aren't familiar with the whole arrangement ... if they hold him down for even 2 weeks, then promote him, they can play him as much as they want in 2019 and then control him for six more seasons thereafter. So an eight-year deal would really only add one season of control.)
4:05
The unprecedented thing, to be clear, would be the massive size for a player with no or very very little MLB service time. There have been a few deals but at much lower $ values.
The Fonz
4:06
Please...no more fan complaints about how much better the NFL offseason is. They're nowhere near the same animal as MLB: 53-man rosters, non-guaranteed contracts, payroll minimums that must be met, etc. If MLB had the same rules and structure as the NFL, its offseason would be just as wild.
Jeffrey Todd
4:06
Also is it even fun to have all the action done with before the signing period even officially opens?
4:07
More fun offseason to follow:

NFL when all the deals happen in quick succession (46% | 148 votes)

MLB when they are spread out for an agonizingly long time (54% | 174 votes)

Total Votes: 322
I guess this like asking whether you are the sort of person who gives yourself an ice cream headache every time a cone ends up in your hand.
4:08
Of course we all know the real answer to that question: MLB when the biggest deals all happen within a one-month period and only a major player or two drags out.
4:09
News!
Fulmer shut down ... to refine his lower body mechanics (?)
4:10
And Vlad Jr formally reassigned to minors camp (try to act surprised)
Will nee to run out of here momentarily to begin writing those items up for the site, as I am due to relieve Steve of his post.
