Any discussion of Snell and frankly any of these recent extensions must also include acknowledgement of free agency being sabotaged
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
Well it has still been working okay for the more youthful, high-end guys. Maybe there's a sense that there's less future upside to protect, but it'd be foolish for the players/agents to overreact too much.
I can see some of that in some of these deals. Many of them seem quite sensible for the player, though.
3:38
You know what's actually more interesting than the FA angle, though? The arbitration one.
3:40
Players have been doing pretty well in some major arb situations. That is an avenue for them to expand earning power especially by having top-end guys blow up the established norms in some key areas. (Eg the lagging arb1 starting pitching comps.) Locking into deals now rather than, say, taking the aggressive paths of Betts and Bauer saps the individual player of some potential upside. More importantly, it robs the arb market of upward pressure.
John Gant
3:41
I love having Gant as a long-man/6th starter, but what could the Cards get for him from a team like the Mets who need starting depth? Being out of options reduces some roster flexibility for the Cards.
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
He'd be the same kind of piece and pose the same kind of problems in New York as St. Louis. I could imagine some kind of deal coming together but I don't think he's going to be valued terribly higher elsewhere.
3:44
Frankly he seems like glaring regression candidate, fwiw.

What’s the shelf life for Rick Hahn as GM? Is he in trouble......yet?
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
He's near or at the top of the hot seat power rankings among GMs. I'm not saying that b/c I necessarily think he has done a bad job, but it's not hard to imagine a regime change if this season shakes out poorly.

3:46
Who do you think gets the next big extension? Thanks Jeff !
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
I don't know. Not a realistic one but it'd be fun to see how it would shake out if some top pitching prospect (Whitley, Paddack) signed an Eloy-esque deal.
deGrom and Rendon are the interesting veteran situations to watch.

Aside from Elvis Andrus and Stephen Strasburg, what other Boras clients have signed extensions?
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
Carlos Gomez, at least

Is there a realistic chance tigers extend castellanos he seems interested.
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
Really not sure that would make sense for DET
Kyle Tucker
3:48
Will I get my extension before the season starts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
Ehhh not sure ... they don't need to do it to save money or avoid a promotion timing issue. And he has enough upside and floor to want to bet on himself.

Angels are serious contenders next season, am I crazy?
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
Absolutely possible. They should see themselves that way. I don't count them out of a wild card this year at all and they surely have some non-trivial chance of taking the division, too. Nothing is written in stone even if the 'Stros look way better on paper.
AcunaExtended
3:52
What would an Acuna Extension look like? Is it a smart move?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
Well you have Eloy topping 40 guaranteed without any service (let alone MLB performance track record). And Bregman (an older and lower ceiling but very very very good 2+ svc player) landing 100. That would seem to be on the high side, though there's an argument that Acuna will be on a fairly significantly greater earning track than Bregman, who is already almost 25. Trout's 140+ first extension could ultimately be in sight.
3:55
You could imagine the Braves coming in with something in the 55-65 range. A lot would depend upon how many options and such. What Acuna would demand ... who knows? Totally up to him where he sets his floor. But he'd be well within his rights to demand something much higher than Eloy. 75 guaranteed? 85? More?

Is it time for the Indians to do contract extensions for Clevinger and Bieber
Jeffrey Todd
3:55
EVERYONE IS GETTING EXTENDED
3:56
Seriously I do think there is a limit at some point to these deals. As noted, we have had extension runs before and they don't all get done.

Marlins with the most wins right now in SP. Can't tell me spring stats don't matter!!
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
They have the most ST wins and that is what leads you to conclude that spring stats don't matter? Or was there some other basis? I mean, I wouldn't go so far as to say that spring stats don't matter at all. But spring wins and losses are all but meaningless. The fact that they have like 40+ dudes in camp that are willing to keep playing hard every day is good and promising and all, but I don't think it really reflects much about how the 25 man roster will peform.

What is your take on pence making the team and Calhoun sent down.
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
I'm guessing they mostly want a Beltre-esque veteran sage on the team. But it's disappointing that Calhoun hasn't forced his way into the picture yet.
Moose
3:59
What would be a match for a trade involving Nick Williams? Will Smith? More, less?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
It's not so much more or less as ... just, not that. I mean, I just don't think the Phillies or other teams really love Williams all that much. If they cared about him, why would they be willing to punt him right now? I guess it's possible that Zaidi just particularly likes him, but I suspect he wants to try to hit it bigger with young talent in a deal for Smith.
4:01
Dont' sleep on Smith as a late-spring trade chip. He's a very very good lefty who'd improve every pen in baseball. And cheap.
4:02
(Not that Moose was sleeping on Smith - quite the contrary.. I'm just saying, I think he's a guy that could still move AND that I think he'll draw some bidding that will drive up the price.)

Who you got winning it all?  Or Duke vs the field?

I'm just hoping my alma mater doesn't suffer another historically embarrassing defeat.
