I don't really see a relationship between these things.

What in the world is wrong with Giolito?  He had a great spring.  I'm certainly gonna be patient, but this is ugly.
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
I don't know, but I'm going to propose that from here on out we refer to that deal as "The Dane Dunning Trade"
New Playoff Format
3:25
Top 8 teams get into the playoffs from each league. No divisions. What do you think? Someone from the AL West and potentially AL East is going to get screwed this year.
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
That'd make the regular season super boring, because you could just coast in with 90 wins instead of trying for 100 in a tough division. I'd rather prioritize the regular season -- a truer test of actual baseball ability -- than just expand the tournament.
3:27
Nobody will get "screwed," I should add. The AL West, AL East, and all three NL divisions currently look competitive and interesting. If some or all are tightly bunched come September, it will be awesome.

What's the Realmuto market looking like now that the Mets landed Mesoraco?
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
No impact on JTR market. Mesoraco is likely a fill-in piece for the Mets.
Tyson Ross
3:29
Am I pitching myself onto a contender?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Sure, he could end up a trade piece. I don't think he'll end up bringing any kind of monster return, but could be a useful asset.

Mike Moustakas is tearing it up. Are there any teams you see willing to take a chance on him? What kind of return could the Royals get back?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
I don't think it's about taking a chance. He's the same guy as last year so far, so you know what you're getting, generally. If there's a need at third, he's a guy you're going to look at.
3:31
That said ... Machado could still be a big factor at 3B. (I know he wants to play short, but a team might still trade for him to play third.) Donaldson could still be involved. Beltre is a really interesting name to watch.

I was cheating on you guys in a Dan Szymborski chat the other day, and he said that even though Chapman brought back a Championship, Epstein made a bad trade there. I disagree. Your thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
I've mentioned before, at least in private, that it'd feel a lot less painful in retrospect had they sent that package for Andrew Miller instead. But ... it's tough. Thing is, plenty of other orgs every year consider selling the farm for a big upgrade. Always have to balance present/future. I think there's definitely an argument that it was not quite the right balance. It is also hard to dispute the fact that they did win the WS (not that it wouldn't have been possible w/out Aroldis).
Mookie
3:34
If Mookie keeps producing like the way he is what could a contact extension look like.
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
He's made it awfully clear he's not interested in one. His value is absolutely soaring, so if you want to convince him otherwise, you better start counting in the hundreds of millions.
3:35
He'll be a 4+ service class player after the current season, same as Stanton when he signed his extension.
Ryan
3:36
Brad Hand for Juan Soto straight up who hangs up first?
Jeffrey Todd
3:36
That's a tough one. The Hand contract only increases his value. Let's do a poll.
Who says no to Soto for Hand?

Nats (58.8% | 180 votes)

Pads (17.3% | 53 votes)

fair trade (23.9% | 73 votes)

It really is a situation where the Padres can hold firm on a price. But awfully tough to give up a player with that kind of ceiling for a reliever. Then again, the Cubs did!
Jason
3:38
Why is all the blame for the Orioles season on Buck?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
It isn't.
Medic Mike
3:39
Of the Nationals Dodgers Cubs which one is more likely to miss the postseason?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
The records have separated enough where I'll go Dodgers at this point. But all three are in much tougher spots than had been expected. Less so the Cubs, who I always felt would be in a dogfight in the NLC.
Logan

How many top 100 prospects could the Marlins gain from trading Realmuto, Castro, Bour, etc?
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
However many they get from trading Realmuto.
3:41
The other players aren't drawing that kind of young talent. Not to say they aren't valuable, just ... there's not a great market for an expensive second baseman and slugging first baseman.
Acuna
3:41
2 weeks in. I'm the real deal, right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
Seems that way.
Mike
3:42
Have there been any violations of the 6 mound visits per game rule this season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
No but the Mets haven't played yet today.
Kidding.
I honestly can't wait for someone to somehow break that rule though.
3:43
You just know it'll be when a shortstop goes in and hands the ball to the pitcher and cracks a joke, and some over-eager ump calls them out on it. (Then again, I don't even know what the penalty is.)
Lance
3:44
Are we out of the small sample size range yet?
Jeffrey Todd
3:44
Depends on what we're talking about.
Brian
3:44
Abreu for the Rockies question obviously
Jeffrey Todd
3:44
Maybe, but he's gonna cost.
