They don't have much of a choice at this point but to wait and let it play out. There are options here, including bringing Hiura up to play second and utilizing Moose or Shaw at first. But it'd be silly to rush into that sort of thing for a variety of reasons. Way too early to do otherwise.

Who else thought that deGrom got fleeced with his extension
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
The deferrals drastically reduced the value ... so in some respects, sure. But he emerged late. The age thing is real.
3:57
There's also just a huge amount of risk in any pitcher pitching a given seasons (let alone two). Both he and Sale took discounts vs what they could have earned in FA. But it wouldn't have taken much in the way of injury or skill deterioration to leave them with less.
Plus those guys already had very significant career earnings, so ... do what you like, really. Very different situation from Albies.

Are we going to see Dylan Cease soon? Did the White Sox forget how to develop a pitcher, considering how good Sale and Quintana are and how poor/inconsistent/injured Lopez, Giolito, Fulmer, Kopech, Dunning, and Rodón have been, or are these just untalented players?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
Everybody is an individual. It's really hard to say anything good bad or otherwise about the org based upon these results. If anything, I'd think the recent difficulties would make the team a bit hesitant to run Cease up there too soon.

For years the analytic community praised teams for locking up young talent and condemned teams for stupid free agent contracts. Now teams are following this advice ... and it’s a bad thing?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
Again, criticizing THIS ONE DEAL -- and only half-criticizing the team's role in it -- isn't some broad-based statement.
4:01
I have defended many early-career extensions that others hated. E.g. Singleton, Merrifield. I examined them in detail and found good cause for them for those players. I feel very differently about this one, even though it involves more money than the other two, b/c Albies is so young and already has such a strong floor with a real ceiling. And b/c he gave away so many FA years.
Sorry for relitigating this over and over, but it's frustrating to be argumentatively mis-taken.

I know that Reinsdorf is loyal but Hahn and Williams have to be concerned....yes?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
I would think so, yes. Certainly there are arguments to be made in favor of them staying to see the rebuild through a bit longer, but it's not hard to imagine a change at some point in the near term.

Why do the Braves get to sign their future stars in Acuna and Albies for so cheap ?  Why can’t they spend stupid money ?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
Hey I also panned the Nola deal from the player's perspective.
Rangers44
4:05
Do you see the Rangers signing another pitcher? If so who?
Jeffrey Todd
4:06
Ummm ... who? I agree, that is the relevant question. Unless they just shrug and bail out Keuchel with a long-term deal, pickings are awfully slim. Edwin Jackson and James Shields have been waiting for just this kind of opportunity, though.
I miss the DL
4:06
this keeps throwing me off, I don't get it, why did they change it?
Jeffrey Todd
4:08
As I understand it, some organizations that work with disabled children approached the league about a change. The idea was just that we tell kids their disabilities don't limit them or define them ... maybe it could send the wrong message to some of them given the way the use of the term has evolved. Switching to "injured list" is easy and can't possibly offend anyone, since who really cares what it's called and maybe this will have a small but appreciable difference for some kids.
Atlanta Braves
4:08
How about some credit to the organization for building a culture around a young core of high-quality players that want to stay here instead of chasing every last dollar?
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
They could still pay those guys fairly instead of utilizing that desire (and their huge financial leverage) and pinching every last penny.
Victory is life
4:09
Did you really insinuate that AA should not sign guys to the deal they agree to? To say no to a deal because it's supposedly less than market value? Are you really insane?
Jeffrey Todd
4:10
Um ... the team could've offered a fair deal. Just b/c you have the leverage to utilize doesn't mean you should, to the fullest extent. That's all. As I said I'm not going to completely pan the team for it -- it' s a bigger WTF for the agent/union -- but they could've come up with something more square for o
Ozzie.

No Bud Norris, so what's my next move? The bullpen has been OK the past two games, but still needs help.
Jeffrey Todd
4:11
I wouldn't get too caught up in the game over game developments. It can get to feel hectic when it seems the pen implodes nightly. But a few really bad games or two decent ones don't change the overall situation -- this unit needs pieces.
4:12
That said, there really aren't obvious fixed out there. They added Sipp b/c they already saw the issues. And they know there are deeper problems, which is why they went quickly to Ross. I think they'll be looking for options all year long.
Trouble with the FA market is all of those guys will need to ramp up. Norris at least had been in camp. Most of the other established pitchers out there weren't.

Albies extension is less money then Wren extended Chris Johnson for.
Jeffrey Todd
4:14
Well he was closer to FA .. but it was a head-scratcher for sure.
Bryan D.
4:14
The Royals have brought up Lovelady. Is he the closer in the near future?
Jeffrey Todd
4:15
Could be. You know what's interesting, in this day and age of service time and extensions, is that they brought him up just 2 days before they could've had him up all year without letting him reach a full year of service. Now he's a reliever and could yet end up back in the minors, but still notable.

Maybe there's something to be said for a player's happiness. Ozzie loves ATL. He just saw his best friend Acuna get an extension and wanted to be there with him. Instead of lambasting the player or the team and having to "pick a side", why not sit back and be happy for the player that he just signed a contract for life-changing money to play a kid's game?
Jeffrey Todd
4:16
I think instead I'll sit back and be happy for the large publicly traded corporation that they are able to make yet greater profits for staging a kid's game.

Do these extensions mean I spend money elsewhere? Or does Liberty Media see more profits

After starting 1-5 , Do you think the angels can make a run for the west? or does that belong to the astros.
Jeffrey Todd
4:18
Man I really have a tough time seeing it. They needed things to go right ... Upton is down for a long stretch, Cozart is struggling/hurt, the rotation remains a question. They have a high enough talent level to be competitive all year and perhaps to shock, but it still seems quite low-likelihood.

Is $175 mil for 6 years fair for me. My agents wants me to ask for Aranado money.
Jeffrey Todd
4:20
Rumor was he wanted Altuve money (151/5) ... but he's arguably worth closer to Arenado. Age is a big distinction there but in terms of performance they really aren't far apart.
