I think 6/175 is sort of what we'd predict if he has a healthy, monster platform season. May be a bit rich for an extension. But perhaps that's what it'd take to get it done.

My bullpen was suppose to be a strong point. Is Calloway mismanaging with usage? Diaz to come in the 9th yesterday with a 4 run lead after using Familia. Wouldn’t you want to leave one of the 2 fresh to close if needed for today?
Jeffrey Todd
4:21
I thought the bullpen always looked good at the back end but lacking in depth. That will tend to create those kinds of questions b/c you're going to want to go to your big guns.
4:22
The NL East is already just on fire. There are going to be high-pressure, tight games all year long by the look of it. I'd expect a lot of hand-wringing regarding all four bullpens.

When is MLB going to look at the archaic TV blackout restrictions?  Is Manfred too obsessed with knocking minutes off the length of games to care about the blackout issues?
Jeffrey Todd
4:23
I assume that'd involve some pretty danged complicated negotiations. And I also assume the league looked at it and felt they weren't going to make more money by doing it.
Gonna have to wrap this up shortly ...

It seems to me that Kimbrel makes sneaky sense for the A's. They have more money then people think and love a bullpen loaded with closers. Any chance they jump in here?
Jeffrey Todd
4:24
They signaled all winter they were hard up on cash, though ... if anything you're think the rotation would get any surprise investment. Esp given that we don't know if Luzardo will give a mid-season boost.

Jeffrey, I was asking about the analytic community’s change in perception of extensions and free agency, not just yours. The point remains: front offices are now being run like the analytic community has long argued for (that is, lock up young talent and quit signing over-the-peak players at high free agent rates), yet there’s a lot of handwringing by the very people who argued for this new reality. I find that interesting and worth a comment by you, that’s all.
Jeffrey Todd
4:25
Gotcha. That is an interesting point, thanks for clarifying. It is something I have thought about. I guess I am not sure how to feel about it entirely, but think it's worth acknowledging and pondering.
4:27
One initial thought: I think there is something of a difference between making smart choices within a fairly and smoothly operating bargaining system and what we are seeing in some cases here. Take the Whit Merrifield deal. That's cool by me for both sides. Late-blooming guy who wanted to lock in some earnings; team took advantage of that fact to get even more of a bargain over a guy they already controlled for cheap.
4:28
I don't really have a side to prefer in all this, it's just that there's a sense that the overall situation is creating some fairly out-of-whack results. Not that it hasn't always ... take the first Salvy Perez extension.
Braves
4:29
Maybe these guys realize they want to be somewhere long term and understand that by signing for a little less, it allows the team to afford more high profile free agents, or pursue trades that enhance their chances of winning a WS.

Stop your whining about a player making crazy amounts of money..he will still make more in a year then most of the human race will in their entire lifetime. He said a deal because he wanted to be an Atlanta Brave, plus when he exits this deal he will strike payday again. #hatersgonnahate #GoBravos

It seems like generally most pundits are pro player and most fans are pro team.
Jeffrey Todd
4:32
It sort of does seem that way at times. Not sure I understand it. I guess it's the whole "huge money to play a kid's game" thing. I understand that gut feeling. I don't feel bad for Albies or any of these other guys ... it's just that I see the game being played by the teams and realize that every buck kept from a player is just more millions for them and their executives to play around with.
Braves should offer dollar beers one night and say they are on Ozzie!

Thoughts on Pete Alonso? Swings from the abdomen like the best player in mlb. Trout is a Good guy to emulate
Jeffrey Todd
4:34
I honestly just love the goofy big fella. He's a throwback in an Evan Gattis-ish way (but without the lumberjack thing). Honestly think the Mets should go with the old sleeveless Ted Kluszewski look just for Alonso.

No Rays love here. They should sign Kimbrel for. One year 15 million us option?
Jeffrey Todd
4:34
Every contender should do that.
Braves

Altuve through age 30: 59 million
Albies through age 30: 45 million

How is Albies getting jobbed?

If Albies plays like Altuve, he’ll get paid like him at 30.
Jeffrey Todd
4:37
Altuve's first deal was also an immense bargain, but he hadn't yet shown anything like Albies' power ceiling. Also I believe his deal only covered one or two would-be free agent seasons.
Anyway citing the few other clear ridiculous bargain deals doesn't really make the case for this one, right?

Should the Cubs and Red Sox panic?
Jeffrey Todd
4:38
It doesn't do any good to panic. But there are real concerns.

Likelihood STL goes after another lefty (like Will Smith) if Andrew Miller continues to show us that his old competent stuff is gone?
Jeffrey Todd
4:38
The more you look at it, the more you have to like the decision of the Giants to hold onto Smith ... there could be a ridiculous number of teams after him at the deadline.

What are your unbiased opinions about the new generation artificial turf being put in our new stadium and will it cause top free agents to go elsewhere??
Jeffrey Todd
4:41
I'm a traditionalist in terms of my aesthetic preferences. But maybe there's a good argument in terms of sustainability and cost not to mess with grass? There has to be a health benefit in the general uniformity of turf, though to be sure teams are pretty good at maintaining sweet grass. Not sure I see it being a big FA factor.
Randy
4:42
Well, if they want to get to more people into the game, it would seem easing the blackout restrictions would help.  Some of the "territories" controlled are absurd.
Jeffrey Todd
4:42
I don't disagree. I sort of presume that they feel mostly locked into this generation of TV contracts but will be looking in the near future at a strategic approach for the changing landscape.
The Fonz
4:43
Can we please stop saying that any team is short on cash? It's simply not true. Even the Oakland A's of the world are raking it in. If nothing else, just their cut of MLB's media deal is more than $100 million.
Jeffrey Todd
4:43
For sure. I said they were signaling that.
4:44
Going to have to get on outta here shortly ...
(embarrassed) Braves Fan
4:44
Just want you to know there are some of us in here who agree with you fully.  And all these "maybe they just wanted to be there" and "let's be happy he got life changing money"  arguments are of no moment; they would be true with any extension.  It doesn't make this extension a good one.
Forrest's Bro
4:44
Framber Valdez got optioned. Does that mean the Astros are going to bring Forrest up? I saw that the team said they would fill the roster spot tomorrow, which I think is important because, by my calculations, April 12 is the first day the Astros can bring him up and keep a year of control.
Jeffrey Todd
4:45
I have 4/12 as the first day also. I would be a bit surprised to see Whitley this early, personally.
