I’ve traded for Andrelton Simmons, signed Mike Trout as an Angel for life, extended Upton after risking a trade for him, and improved the Angels farm system...despite our team record over my tenure, have I done enough to stay in Anaheim past this season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
I expect so. There have been some arguable missed opportunities but mostly I think he's doing good things within the constraints he's operating under.
3:40
That includes the fact that they are trying to rebuild the farm while remaining competitive and while dealing with some big contract mistakes. That is connected to the desires of ownership, surely, which includes ongoing stadium negotiations.

Any chance at all that I come back to baseball if the NFL doesn’t work out?
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
That's one of the good arguments in favor of the NFL for him. He will get to go right to the highest level of football and see if he's got it. If he flames out in 4-5 years he can still go back and follow the footsteps of Tim Tebow!
3:42
Getting to play in the NFL in the near-term is surely a big draw. He obviously prefers football to some extent. There's more in the way of marketing opportunities. And if he goes 1st overall he'll earn more money.
BUT
the health risks are huge. Obviously he knows that and has accepted it but that'd be a big factor for me personally. Not one I'll ever have to weigh, alas!

Is there any truth to the rumor that Vince McMahon is planning to buy the Braves?
Jeffrey Todd

I heard Tiger Woods was involved somehow?

Is baseball better today than, let's say, fifty years ago?
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
Better talent? By a long sight. The physical abilities are obviously much more developed and the ever increasing money in the sport, etc, has driven more people to become very very skilled at it. There's a narrower talent spread now. Game of inches more than ever and all that.
3:46
Is it more entertaining? I don't know ... I don't love the proliferation of Ks and dingers as a fan. To me I'd rather see players on the bases and balls bouncing around in 512 foot oddball corners of the yard.

My Angels really, really so far. Can you give me any hope???
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
I have very little hope for this season. They are way back of a far superior team in that division.

On the one hand, Cameron Maybin is a good pickup for the injury depleted yankees. On the other hand, Cameron Maybin wasn't good enough to make the Indians outfield which is arguably the least talented in baseball. Were there any better options for the Yankees outside of their system?
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
I mean ... I don't know that I'd say he was not good enough for the Indians. They are managing roster considerations there as well. He's as good as you could hope to find for basically no cost (minimal trade return, salary, etc). Competent outfielder who can play all 3 positions and at least give you competitive at bats ... can't hope for more than that.
3:50
Obviously the hope here is that it's only a temporary fill-in anyway.

I know its way to early, but is Josh Hader on a HOF pace?
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
If he keeps this up for like another 12 years then he could make the hall. So ... kind of? But the odds are quite low.

Why are the Mets?
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
"Why are the Mets?" sounds like it should be on a t-shirt that Mets fans wear.

3:52
Vargas is horrible.  Not sure how long the Mets can afford to give away all of his starts for losses with this division being so tight.  What moves do you see them making to shore up that #5 spot in the rotation and/or the pen??  They can't wait til the deadline - something should happen sooner rather than later, no?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Steve and I were chatting about this earlier. Callaway lauded Vargas for giving like 4 2/3 decent innings and said you'd take that every day from a #5. Assuming that to be true ... the trouble is they aren't getting it every time out.
3:53
It's like that scene fro Little Big League where the kid manager is praising the dude who was his favorite player for getting a knock ... "it was just a seeing-eye single"
"Kid, don't you think there's a problem when you get that excited over a seeing-eye single?"
3:54
That's the actual quote. Little Big League introduced concepts of sample size and aging curves to the popular culture.
Also presaged the arrival of the front-office-controlled, statistically-beholden manager.

Excited to see Vlad Jr. tomorrow?

Would've been a little more excited to see him like last August but heck yeah.

Why didn't you include the marlins in the NL East champion poll?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Did you want to vote for them or ... ?
3:57
It is a law of the internet that you always get complaints about how you draw up a poll. But ...
They have a statistically insignificant chance of winning the division.

Is this flash-back-form Greg Holland for real?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
I was looking in at him earlier today as part of a post I am writing and ... it looks like he's about the same guy. He has been capable lately apart from that awful run with the Cardinals. Velo is still trending down, though it's mostly holding steady ... he's getting a few more swings and misses than last year but within range of some variation. I think it's just a nice run right now. But also that he's still a good reliever.
