Ladies and gentlemen, please be advised that today's chat is currently in a RAIN DELAY.
(Something came up and I have to watch the kids for a bit ... we'll get rolling here asap!)
3:30
The tarp is coming off .... 2 minutes ...
3:35
Ok let's do this, thanks for your patience
July 31
3:35
You know there's a way around the single trade deadline.
Jeffrey Todd
3:36
I haven't thought it out in great detail, but it doesn't seem like there's much of a clean way around it at first glance. Teams will just have to commit earlier.
Worth remembering that the August trade period was never really used the way it was in the past two years. That really ramped up.

Per our local radio station today, and chance the Rangers get Kimbrel on 3-4 years and open our new yard
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
That would be absolutely stunning to me.
They are already working to draw down the big payroll commitments somewhat and have a massive long-term rotation need. Don't see them as a pole to pole contender this year.

Does Russell ever make it back to the Cubs , barring injuries of course?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
I don't think they'd have tendered him if that wasn't the plan.
Cubs
3:38
We've been pretty good in the past 4 weeks or so:  1-6 to start the season, 15-6 since.  Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
Baseball tends to even out over a long enough sample.
Still see the Cubs about the same as I did before the season. Good, arguably the favorite in the division but not a runaway.
Luke Voit
3:40
The sequence of events that is likely to lead to my leading the Yankees in HRs (Sanchez could, too, but, catcher) is not what any fan of the team wanted, but how on earth did Cashman find me? Are post-hype non-prospects the new market inefficiency (eg me, Pham, etc)?
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
Guys like this have always emerged. Steven Souza and Whit Merrifield are a few other notable recent examples.
3:41
Obviously you take your hat off to the NY front office for finding him. But let's not discount the possibility that the Yanks just sort of liked him and saw a fit/need and pulled the trigger and things worked out beyond their wildest fantasies. The Cards did much the same with Jose Martinez.

What is the difference between extended Spring Training and a minor league rehab assignment?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
Extended spring is hanging out with a bunch of other guys that are working through drills, trying to get healthy or work out some kinks, doing staged things like simulated games and live BP.
A rehab assignment is playing with an affiliate and going through regular game activities.

Get off this chat and take those kids outside to play. Wait, can you do this from your phone in the park?
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Don't worry. I spent the entire day getting after it with my son -- baseball, soccer, rock climbing -- and the whole crew is outside with mom right now.
3:44
But somebody has to work to pay the bills, right?
3:45
(Mostly I answered this b/c I totally agree -- get those kids out of the damned house and active!)
Chop Shop

Adam Duvall seems to have put it back together with regular at bats in AAA. So....what do the Braves do with him? Is a trade the only path?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
I think there's still a path back to Atlanta. They obviously liked him enough to acquire him and tender him after that brutal season. And his trade value isn't going to be much unless/until he does it in the majors. A bit surprised they haven't done so yet.
Game of Thrones
3:47
The anticipation of waiting for you is exactly the same as what the North felt waiting for the Whitewalkers in last week's episode.
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
I just don't know what this means but hopefully it indicates that I am a serious badass.
Or does the north ambush and destroy the whitewalkers?!
Don't confuse me with pop culture.
ATX Halo
3:48
Angels playoff hopes are bleek at best, what pieces will they be able to trade to get any value?
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
Let's check in on the guys they signed to one-year deals over the winter ...
...
mmmhmm...
... oh, oh no
3:50
I mean, they just really aren't shaping up to have rental pieces that are going to be very attractive. Things may well look a bit different by the time the deadline rolls around, but the short-term veteran types that could be of use elsewhere (Calhoun, Cahill, Harvey, Allen, Lucroy, Bour) are mostly not that cheap and in most cases are of limited appeal.
Twinkies
3:51
Are the Twins for real? This was expected to be another average year, but they're on fire. Your thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
While I thought some of the quotes from the front office this winter were eye-rollers, I did agree with Falvey or Levine (can't remember which said it) that this was going to be a very high-variance squad. Meaning, pretty lofty ceiling but also no small number of players with deep floors.
3:54
So far, they are hitting on a lot of their bets. The guys they extended are reaching new levels, they're getting solid output from Buxton and Sano is on his way back, the pen is working out. They aren't all going great -- so far, Perez and Schoop good, Marwin/Cron/Pineda not so much -- but on balance they are winning the dice rolls.
