I anticipate some regression but on the whole there are legitimate reasons to be encouraged and anticipate that they will be in it all season long. Especially with the Indians having two premium starters go down. Door is open.

Wait... Is it you or Steve Adams that is the Cubs fan?
Jeffrey Todd

Among those of us that chat ... Tim is the Chicago guy at MLBTR. Steve is from Minnesota and I'm from the DC area. Mark is in Toronto.
Please adjust your accusations of bias accordingly.

Long time reader, never had a question answered so hoping this could be it.  Regarding Josh Hader, any hunch that he'll ever be a SP or on the flip side, a traditional one inning everyday closer?

TODAY IS YOUR DAY
4:00
It's always possible but I'm not sure I see it. The way the lines have blurred these days ... why mess with an approach that is working so well? Maybe they play with using him for more innings at a time, or using him more often and mostly for one-inning outings, perhaps depending upon the team's needs. But asking him to go as long as he can every fifth day seems like an unnecessary risk for a guy who always had some questions as a rotation piece.

If I offered a total of 19 million to Kyler Murray to play baseball, why can't I take that money and actually go after decent starters during free agency rather than the Estrada's of the world??
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
Certainly possible the organization viewed it as a unique exception, etc, and there are obviously differing considerations for the prospect and the veteran. But ... the money wasn't going to come from nowhere. It's there.

Will getting rid of me improve the Giant’s overall potential?

If you were a GM, what free agent in next years class would be your #1 target and why?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
Whoops, hit two at the same time.
4:05
Re the Giants ... I can't imagine why there'd really be a competitive disadvantage. I get that there's a power penalty that could impact the guys they target in FA, but they should be targeting players that fit the park. Having an extreme thing of some kind of a park allows you to find a few minor advantages, in theory.
4:06
Re next year's FA class, well ... I didn't really mean to answer that one. That depends totally on what the team's needs are -- both position and its overall slate of contracts and players. I do recommend reading through Tim's recent power rankings: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/04/2019-20-mlb-free-agent-power-ra...

Call me crazy, but Braves should move Tehran to the pen....he’s generally really good for 2 innings every time he pitches.  Worth a shot no?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
I don't hate the idea of the Braves pairing up a few starters and asking them each to go once through the order, or 3-4 innings, or whatever. Could be pretty interesting.

Assuming last night was a small bump and Sanchez's fingernails stay mostly together, what could we dream of in regards to a return this summer?
Jeffrey Todd
4:10
It's just ... the peripherals aren't there. I know he outperformed them in his one big season, and has stuff/velo that teams like, but you can't just ignore the middling K numbers and gobs of walks. He doesn't get a dominant number of grounders. Really think he needs to show more before anyone is buying in and going big on an offer.

Is Brian Goodwin for real?
Jeffrey Todd
4:13
As a useful MLB player, sure. As like a first-division regular? Don't think so.
Dallas
4:14
Why don't the White Sox go and sign Dallas?   They could use the veteran experience and the team is going to be competitive soon.   He would be the perfect Lester on the South Side.
Jeffrey Todd
4:14
He'd be more comparable to Edwin Jackson in terms of the cost and part of the competitive cycle the team is in.

I actually was scanning the international league leaderboard the other day and noticed he was dead last in OPS among qualifying players.

When does Zaidi bite the bullet and bring up Mac Williamson?
Jeffrey Todd
4:19
There's just no reason at all to rush that. He's not on the 40-man so once you make the move, you're stuck from a roster perspective (keep him in majors or expose him to waivers/he can elect free agency if he clears).
I believe Andrew Baggarly said last night he'd expect they go to Chris Shaw first, and that makes sense. He's on the 40-man already and is optionable and has had less opportunities in the majors.

How do I get my 4 year old daughter to like baseball?
Jeffrey Todd
4:21
Shoot I don't know. Mine loved going to games when she was really little but now mostly shrugs at it (8 years old). We go play sometimes still. My boy likes to play but doesn't quite have the attention span to really watch it. Kids are gonna like what they like to some extent; I try to show them lots of stuff and make sure they are active and engaged but otherwise let them follow what they enjoy.

This is officially the parenting-oriented chat of the year, sorry childless participants.
