Trouble is, the peripherals aren't backing up the results. Teams are well aware of this. Don't get me wrong, he could still be seen as a solid innings eater option who might be an interesting long man/rotation injury replacement sort of piece in the postseason. But nobody is going to just look at the ERA and fall in love.
3:40
Which is to say ... I don't expect he'll be seen as useful enough to get a significant prospect, even if the Giants pay down the whole deal. But he could surely bring back something, with the cash/prospect value all being negotiable.

Lots left to play, but who are your WS picks?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
Hard not to pick the Astros and Dodgers right now. Pretty sure that's what I'd have picked before the season, if I ever answered that, though I'd have seen the Yankees and Astros as close.
Speed
3:43
With power being so highly valued (arguably over valued) ... and speed guys coming relatively cheap (likely undervalued) ... why don’t we see a team in a big ballpark like SF or Miami try to go for an all speed type team who bunts, steals bases, plays tremendous def, etc?
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
Teams certainly should and do consider their home park in evaluating guys for their MLB rosters. But it's tough to make that the driving force. The Royals sort of have tried that this year by going and getting the speed and D types that were out there. But you're limited by the fact that the dudes that are cheap also have some massive warts. If, say, Billy Hamilton was a league-average hitter, he'd be valued much more highly by other teams as well.
you down with obp?

Is Teheran getting lucky lately or has he finally learned to pitch with diminished velocity?
Jeffrey Todd
3:47
Y'all know me, still the same old T
3:48
He looks like the same exact guy he has been for some time. Peripherals line up across the board. He has always outperformed ERA estimators, so you can choose whether you think he'll continue to do so this year or will find his regression comeuppance.

Am I legit? Healthy with an opportunity to start consistently for the first time in years, plus that awesome changeup movement
Jeffrey Todd
3:49
I don't know, not seeing much to get too excited over.

Jeff, big fan of yours writing in from Mexico City.  What sort of impact will Carter Stewart's signing in Japan have on future prospects?  Is this a big deal for beisbol?
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
Thanks for writing in, Chet. You sound swell.
I find the Stewart situation pretty interesting. It's another one I'm trying to look into more deeply to write up a post.
3:52
Will the Japanese team be able to recoup a posting fee? If so, will MLB just demand a renegotiation of the posting agreement? Will MLB demand he reenter the draft? Seems there's a lot of jostling and negotiating still to come. And Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball limits teams to 4 foreigners on the active roster at any given time, which limits just how much this could come into play. But some intriguing possibilities.

What is our biggest area of need?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
Well, the outfield does have the greatest share of the total area of a baseball field.
And the Indians' outfield is pretty ugly.
So I'll say outfield.

Is your last name really Todd?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
This isn't the first time I've received this question. Is it really that odd a last name? It is reasonably common. As are others that are also first names.
Carter Stewart is the real weirdo, right?

Why are the Marlins dragging their feet on Gallen?  Super two?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Eh, I think they just have guys up that they want to give chances to. And obviously there's no reason to prioritize present-day wins. He'll get his shot.
Cargo
3:56
More surprised by the Indians move or by my bad start?  Which team will take a risk on my summer upswing potential?  Reunion with Clint H in Pitt or Rays buying low maybe?
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
I don't think there was any reason for surprise. CarGo just hasn't been a productive player for some time. Obviously he was worse than might have been anticipated but there was a reason he signed late on a minors deal.
I think he'll need to accept another minors deal without any assurances of a promotion if he wants to keep playing.
Paty Kerry
3:58
How much is Cole's start costing him in FA?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
Nothing as of this point. He's still dominating in most regards. Just a little BABIP and home run spike that'll probably smooth out. If he keeps giving up dingers all year that'll hurt but teams will still pay the man.

Who should I trade off of the big league team to clear playing time for Yordan and Kyle?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
As I've said before, there's just no rush. They are cruising in the division. Would be nice to be able to sell higher on some of the guys who'd need to be moved out. Or wait to see if an unfortunate injury or something comes up that forces a change of plan.
I get that it's hard to watch guys annihilate a level of the minors and just sit there waiting, but it's at least understandable for a team that has this much talent.

Do you foresee any trades happening soon?  Lots of teams could benefit from mixing it up, no?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
I don't think teams are going to be set in their ways. They have probably been thinking about how the loss of the August trade period will impact strategies in July. Maybe some teams will see a path to more efficient transactions by moving early. I expect there will at minimum be more early discussions as they feel each other out regarding the new rules (single trade deadline).

Grade the cano trade so far?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
I didn't like it for the Mets and still don't. I think they overvalued Cano and somewhat oversold themselves on their overall roster talent level. Not to say they shouldn't have gone after a guy like Diaz, but I think it was an overpay when you look at the prospect value and amount of money they took on.
Am I Crazy?
4:04
It it completely inconceivably that the Giants most valueable trade piece is actually Will Smith not MadBum?
Jeffrey Todd
4:05
If anything that was more the case at the start of the season than now. Smith is continuing to dominate, so his value is certainly rising, but I think MadBum has actually shown more of a rebound than was reasonably to anticipate at the outset of the season.
4:07
But generally if you see MadBum as like a mid-rotation SP who might have another gear in the postseason, and Smith as an ace lefty reliever ... both on expiring contracts (former being more expensive) ... it's generally similar trade deadline value and you could certainly argue Smith is worth more.
4:09
going to grab a couple more Q's and then I'll have to run ...
