Just glancing around at questions, I see Stroman proposed as a target for A's, White Sox, Phillies, Braves ...
2:39
Padres ... Twins ... Cards
You get the picture.
BIG RED MACHINE

Are the Reds sellers at the deadline? And give me a reason Dietrich doesmt make the All Star team in his home town
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
I'm going to guess they end up mostly in the hold camp. Maybe a targeted addition or two. Could still go either way. Don't sleep on them. Easy to look and see they are in last place, but they aren't buried by any stretch.

With no August waiver trades anymore there's been talk that bigger deals will happen well before July 31st.  When do you see things cranking up in earnest.
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
Having already seen the Mariners begin to move guys, and with the significant free agent signings happening in short order after the draft, I think it's all fair game for the next 7 weeks. Can't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see action starting now.

Am I the only one not surprised with the "revival" of Hunter Pence. Dude has 1 average year (WAR 0.1, BR) in 2017, a bad year (WAR -0.9, BR) in 2018 and everyone seemed to think he was done? While I'm surprised he is playing so well, why do fans, teams, media seem to go off on some players? Is there some sort of additional summary data more granular than WAR that I'm missing? I mean the dude signed a ML deal this Spring.
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
If you really foresaw this, then hats off. You may honestly be the only person that isn't surprised that Pence is hitting ... better than ever?!
2:44
He's 36 and fell off completely before this season. I wouldn't have been surprised if he had come back to be a decent veteran reserve OF, but this is quite unexpected.

Cards have to make a SP move now right with the Cubs somewhat suring up their bullpen by getting Kimbrel?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
I get the sentiment but you can't do business that way. Wouldn't be likely to lead to a good decision. Teams have to look at the full scope of the season (and many other seasons beyond). You always knew the Cubs would do something to improve if they were in position, so the Kimbrel signing isn't a surprise in that sense.

So you see me being dealt next?  Where do you see as a likely destination for me?  Could I end up in Boston?  How about Tampa?  I was really hoping to go there this winter and ended up in Seattle ... What's your opinion?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Would look pretty good on the Astros ...
2:48
... or maybe a NL team gets bold? In addition to the teams you propose.
2:49
Sorry just had to run up that transaction on the site.

The Twins can't be quiet at the deadline again right? Now that they should have legitimate WS aspirations with good young controllable pieces, they've got to make a splash, right?
Jeffrey Todd
2:52
You have to take your chances when they come. Absolutely they need to make some win-now moves. That all needs to be balanced against the future, but yeah, gotta go now with their roster playing well and the Indians dealing with such massive problems.

Will Miguel Cabrera end up being one of the worst extensions given in the history of MLB?
Jeffrey Todd
2:55
Very likely. Honestly, it was hard to understand at the time. I'm not going to diminish how great a hitter Cabrera was. But I remember being floored by that deal, two years before he was set for FA. And I think we expressed that at the time. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/03/tigers-to-extend-miguel-cabrera...
2:56
It has gone worse than expected, obviously. But these were exactly the kinds of issues -- for the org more broadly and for Miggy more particularly -- that made it feel questionable at the time.

Is it expensive for teams to purchase players from the independent leagues?
Jeffrey Todd
2:58
I don't honestly know but I assume it is a standard, fairly low cost. Like 20k or something.

Do the Padres HAVE to trade an outfielder, and if so, who should it be?  I'm partial to just demoting Margot and dealing with the defensive dropoff with Myers and Cordero in CF.  Cordero is on the IL of course.
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
Well, they have already shown they can manage the roster with this bunch of dudes. But at some point they are just going to want to make some decisions and move on from some guys, right? If Margot isn't going to stick, maybe it's time to send him somewhere else to get his shot. And ultimately they do need to balance glovework up the middle. If they want to make the most competitive 2019 roster, maybe OF is an area to look for an upgrade. If they want to be patient and keep their options open for the future, perhaps they shrug and hope the fill-in CFers are at least passable defensively.

How much contract money do you think the Giants will swallow in trades? I imagine nearly all of it to maximize prospect return. If any team can certainly afford it..
Jeffrey Todd
3:04
I'm sure they'll be willing to eat most of the money if it is truly an opportunity to get good prospect value on the cash. Some other clubs would rather take on money than give up prospects. They'll just have to weigh all the possibilities.
But that stance should create more options for the front office.

Why on earth did I not pay the slight premium to get Keuchel for the year? I am not sure exactly what I will get out of Severino when he heals up, and German doesn'
Jeffrey Todd
3:06
I thought it was a nice price on Keuchel. And it's not as if the Yanks need to pinch every penny. But I think this is likely as much about the other options as it is about how much Keuchel cost. When he left their price range, they decided they'd rather do what they expect it'll take to swing a deal for a different pitcher.

Do you find the timing of Chance Sisco being brought up to the majors days before the Orioles select their new "cornerstone" at the catching position odd? I realize that the new guy isn't going to go to the majors immediately but when statements are being made by the press like he might be the best prospect since Trout, I would think the expectation would be he won't be a minor leaguer for a long period of time.   Do you think its possible that Sisco is being showcased and the better he plays the more likely he is playing his way out of Baltimore?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
It isn't odd at all. They need quaffable MLB catching now and even more importantly they need their current MLB roster spots to hold as many valuable player assets as possible. If Sisco can find his way toward his former promise, that benefits the organization even if Rutschman immediately morphs into Johnny Bench.
Also Rutschman needs some time still. He's not close to the MLB radar.
3:10
And Trout isn't a good comparison. Most teams didn't have a top-of-the-draft grade on him, obviously. And he was a high school guy. He became an uber prospect once he was a pro. Nobody thinks Rutschman is the best prospect since Trout. (Maybe he will eventually be, but that'd be a dream scenario even for a 1-1 pick.)
3:11
Strasburg is probably a better analogy. Outstanding college player viewed as a more or less can't-miss pro prospect. Easy 1-1 selection.

I really need to go after Brad Hand, right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
There should be some good lefties available this summer. Makes sense for the Dodgers to land one of them.
Of course, when you are just smashing the competition as LAD has to this point, there's no rush. You can focus on value and/or on making sure you get the guy(s) you really want.
Free Agents

So who won the free agent prediction contest now that Kimbrel and Keuchel are signed?
