You tip your cap to Means for gutting out results, but ... look beneath the surface and it doesn't seem promising that he'll keep up anything like this. Could well be a solid MLB pitcher but I don't see contenders really pushing for him at this stage. He's unproven over the long haul, obviously. And the O's can't just send him out for a meager return when he's a guy they can market a bit and cite as a part of the future.

Do you think the Braves will go for a starter only or a starter and a closer?
Jeffrey Todd
8:38
I don't know about closer, specifically, as in a dude that has been recording saves for his current team. But it's hard to imagine they won't be trying to land one or two relievers.

What would a Muncy extension look like ?
Jeffrey Todd
8:41
Tough one. He's almost 29. Dodgers just don't have a lot of need to go wild. But maybe you could look at something in the mold of the Merrifield and Calhoun deals -- mostly buy out the arb years at a price that sets the player up for life and at which the team expects to save money. Maybe there's a club option.

Maybe the Phillies should’ve kept Santana and dealt Hoskins for an ace?
Jeffrey Todd
8:42
Well there was a reason they signed Santana in the first place. But ... at the time of the trade, you could've have made the opposite hindsight argument. Nature of the game.
Michael

You’ve mentioned that your take is that the Yankees will swap for a talented bullpen arm but they probably won’t pay the price for Will Smith. So who then?
Jeffrey Todd
8:45
I really don't think I issued such a take. Maybe one of our other chatters?

Not that I specifically see them as the team to beat on Smith. I think Smith fits with basically every contender. Yanks don't really specifically need a lefty so much but obviously they could improve the pen and have indicated they're interested in doing so.
Honestly wouldn't count them out on much of anything.

Re above discussion of Deivi Garcia ...

It’s not just Deivi Garcia. The Mets have done extensive background work on many Yankees prospects lately. BUT before you get excited, know that, per sources, the sides are far apart on talks and not currently optimistic.
See how this stuff goes? We hear a lot of these nuggets every year and most don't ultimately result in trades. That doesn't mean there isn't any kernel of truth. But it suggests there are lots of other kernels floating around out there that just aren't being reported.

Is there anyway the Mets can reacquire Justin Dunn and Jarred Kelenic by taking on Mike Leake and his entire contract?
Jeffrey Todd
8:50
I'm not sure he's owed enough for that to work. But it would be the most humiliating way possible of completing the circle.
That or sending out yet more prospects along with some of Cano's contract to some other team.

Is neapolitan ice cream one or three flavors?
Jeffrey Todd
8:52
Is Mike Trout one talent or five tools? I don't know. I don't think about it. I just enjoy the delicious ice cream.

Am I being a homer or was the return on Cashman a little light?
Jeffrey Todd
8:53
You mean Cashner? I think he was always going to be dealt in a deal like this. Never was going to generate lots of interest or offers of significant prospects.

Is any available closer for the Nats worth going over the luxury tax?
Jeffrey Todd
8:54
The lux tax line doesn't mean all that much when you only go over it by a little bit. Just slightly changes the math on the particular player in question. Now they may have a budget that coincides with it, and they may or may not stick with it, but I can't imagine the threat of a small tax bill will be seen as a hard barrier.

Halos not bringing back Calhoun at 14 mill is he traded before the July 31?
Jeffrey Todd
8:57
Yeah I don't think the option will matter much. It's too steep, esp with Adell coming. I think the question is whether they'll prefer to just hang tight and hope for the best or accept what'll likely be an unexciting return for Calhoun.
8:58
Remember, there are some other lefty corner bat types out there, including Corey Dickerson and David Peralta ... or Dyson/Hamilton if you want a CF capable guy with wheels ... or a host of others with somewhat different characteristics.

JP Morosi posed the following trade: Bukauskas, Whitley, & Fisher for Robbie Ray. That seems like a lot for Ray...is it?
Jeffrey Todd
9:00
Yeah that feels heavy unless the Astros are really giving up on Whitley.
Dom Mazetti

Do the early trades of back-end starters/innings eaters surprise you?
Jeffrey Todd
9:00
Nah they make sense early, b/c they are situations where teams need immediate patches and the selling club knows they aren't going to gin up a bidding war. Better to get a palatable deal done now than risk being stuck with the guy come August 1.

What the hell happens with Eric Sogard? What grade prospect is he worth in trade? Or is this all some type of.. mirage?
Jeffrey Todd
allow me to hype my own article on the subject
It amused me to write it, anyway.
9:03
Not amused in that I was gleefully dismissing Sogard. It was a real effort to look at him on my part and he's obviously doing something different than before that is coinciding with the current offensive environment in a useful manner.

But it was a fun one to write b/c I somehow stumbled upon the strained Ryan Goins connection. ... And, predictably, some people in the comments got all salty at me for trashing Ryan Goins. Jays fans love them some Goins.
9:04
I also love scrappy utility types and root for them. They can have value beyond the stat sheet. But ... I'm also realistic.

Frazier in a package for Bauer almost makes too much sense right?
Jeffrey Todd
9:06
So much that it sorta doesn't make sense. I mean ... hard to know what to make of the prior Indians connection. Obviously they liked him at one point, but they did trade him ... but was it begrudgingly?! More importantly, I don't know that Frazier really is a centerpiece for a Bauer deal. I know the numbers were good this year, but it's rather obvious the Yankees aren't full believers.

Why don't sites like this one highlight players like domingo Santana being an obvious trade candidate? Is it his defense or does this site believe Santana is in the mariners long term plans? Or do you think he's not that good? Seems like an obvious player to be traded
Jeffrey Todd
9:07
We do think quite a bit about guys like him. We always try to highlight guys that aren't getting proper treatment from the mainstream outlets, some of which are utterly fixated on Madison Bumgarner. Hence our recent examinations of guys like Sogard and Roenis Elias https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/mariners-trade-rumors-roenis-el...
So, Santana ...
