It's going to be the same cost as it would be to sign anywhere else, in all likelihood. He's going to be fun to predict. Price point is rising. There's a case for 4 years on the Zobrist model, though the market has skewed shorter recently and I feel like JD is the type who'll want an elite salary even if it means a shorter contract.
For now, let's do a poll on that, on the assumption he gets 3 years.

Who would you consider the favorite for the Cy Young? deGrom and Scherzer have to be the favorites, but Ryu and Soroka among others are also solid choices
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
It is a close one. Definitely possible that a big game or two down the stretch will nudge this one in a certain direction. Another good poll, though!

Soroka (14.8% | 74 votes)

Ryu (18.2% | 91 votes)

Scherzer (40% | 200 votes)

Re Donaldson ... it's a tough question, really. Rendon is on the market as well. The injury history is worrisome. But he's still so good. I think I might be moving into the 75-90 tier, personally.

Will the Mariners trade Haniger this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
Not after the season he had, no.
Cubs fan

I'm not saying Nico Hoerner for MVP. I am saying the Cubs might want to leave a spot at 2nd that he can compete for next year
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
Wasn't picking on you for the question. Sorry if it came across that way. I think he'll be considered a part of the picture. But I'm not sure he'll be a favorite to break camp.
3:40
Now this is a good observation:
@SLGreenberg
I see Nico Hoerner’s face and just want to tell him: “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold.” #Cubs

Should the Rangers throw money at Rendon to hold down 3rd in the new stadium for the next 5 years or spread that money on 2 or 3 positions instead?
Jeffrey Todd
3:42
Well he is a Texas guy. Maybe there's an angle where they get a bit of a deal on him. Generally, though, I would be inclined to exercise greater caution. Lots of questions on that roster and whiffing on a huge FA signing would be a big problem.
By the way, I am finding myself a bit confused at where Rendon contract expectations seem to be heading.
3:43
Lots of suggestions of Arenado+ ... which, yikes. He's significantly older. And the Arenado deal came in higher than I personally had expected based upon other market developments. I agree with John Ryan above that it'll likely be a 5 (maybe 6) year deal. Big money for sure, but not the 230 or whatever in new money that Nolan got.

Wow, Anthony Rendon screwed up my chances to low ball him with deferred money, huh?
Jeffrey Todd
3:44
Not sure what happened there, but the Nats missed a chance, yeah.

I'm starting to get the ugly feeling that once again my Dodgers are built for the long-haul, but not a short series against a quality playoff team.  Their use of the 40-man roster is 2nd to none, but I don't see their starting pitching matching up against the likes of the Astros.  Please tell me  I'm wrong . . . .
Jeffrey Todd
3:45
They have managed to win quite a few postseason series in recent years, no?
Nats haven't, despite having awesome rotations. Shrug.
3:46
I would be feeling pretty good about the way the team is being run (TV deal notwithstanding).

have the rockies given up on brendon rodgers?they didnt give him much of a chance when they brought him up and now hes hurt
Jeffrey Todd
3:48
They were still trying to claw back into contention and he was struggling. I doubt they've given up on him. He'd probably be getting loads of time right now if he wasn't hurt.

Seriously, overstated Jays? Will jays be players in free agency? Same guy gets the same question asked and answered in numerous chats in a row now.
Jeffrey Todd

I haven't even done a chat in some time ... I have no idea who asked the question.

Odds the DBacks don't do a full tear down after their late season surge?
Jeffrey Todd
3:50
They were never angling for a full tear-down. Point was to transition some aspects of the roster while remaining competitive.

You gotta think Syndergard is a goner. Who you think goes after him? What can the Mets expect bac.
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
I'm not sure about that. They will talk, but you can't just move him for whatever you can get. Has to make sense.

I AM JEFF TODD
What happened is that my usual time slot on Thursday got messed with due to other scheduling changes, and I have not managed to get a new time slot embedded into my feeble old man brain.
3:55
We will get it sorted and get back into a consistent place again.
(Oh, and today ... I took the chat slot usually occupied by Steve because he was busy. He'll chat later this week.)
