Has my attitude and performance this year lowered my trade value this offseason (as opposed to what it was at the deadline)?
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
Performance matters. If he had a 2.55 ERA he'd be more valuable (though also more expensive via arb). No getting around that. But I don't think the attitude thing is much of a factor in this case. Dude takes the ball and goes hard. That'd only potentially factor in if the Mets end up mis-playing this from a PR perspective and get backed into a corner where they lose leverage. Even then, you'd assume there'll be sufficient interest to drive bidding.

What are the chances that Anthony Rendon signs with a team other than the Nationals and Stephen Strasburg opts out of his contract in the offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
Could be linked, eh? If Stras opts out (I lean no), that makes it a lot easier to pop for Rendon.

Why does a lot of the media think JD Martinez is likely to opt out?  Is he really going to significantly beat the 3yr/~63M he is owed?  He is an AL only player in a league with a lot of teams rebuilding and most of the big guys already have DH solutions. Texas?  Chicago?  Who else might be in on him?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
I'm not sure if that's the perception, but I agree it's at most a close case and arguably a situation where he ought to keep the bird in hand. He's a monster, but hasn't been quite as much of a monster as he was the prior 2 years. And he's older than at the time of his last deal. I do think that interest could come from places like those you mention, but he's an AL-only guy.

With the way he has talked about wanting to stay in St. Louis, do you think Ozuna is a potential accept the qualifying offer candidate if they can’t agree to an extension, or is he heading to free agency?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
It's not like he grew up there and has only ever wanted to be a Cardinal. He may prefer to stay and might even give a bit of a financial advantage (or the chance to match an offer, or whatever), but I doubt he'll sacrifice a shot at a long-term deal just to remain in St. Louis.

Heading to Rox/Redbirds tonight. 3-5 things I should look for or pay attention to at Coors?  Game related or not
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
1) Falling Rock taphouse before or after
2) go watch the starters warm up from above in the OF
4:05
3) if you want to go cheap, buy a Rockpile ticket (like 10 bucks) and wander the concourse, watching from different vantage points
4) find a way to get into the mountains at some point
5) go to Biker Jim's for wild game dogs (ostrich, etc) at some point
4:06
Oh and don't try to sneak into a different section with your ticket, the ushers there are oppressive.

With one year left on his contract, should the Angels extend Andrelton Simmons?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
Dunno ... he's 30, bat has not been there this year, and you wonder how long he'll be a complete and total magician with the glove. Maybe worth looking to see if he'll settle for a good price, though.

The Reds made some improvement this year, however  most Reds fans are not keen on Mgr. Bell. He never lets a lineup gel, constantly changing. Has tendancy to use the same struggling bullpen guys. I know he is a rookie manager, but he has lost them enough games where the Reds should be a few games over .500. Your opinion of the job he has done?
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
I don't really have a strong opinion, except that I don't think the factors you mention really are major strikes against him. I have never understood why lineups need to stay fixed ... when it is your turn, you go hit. These guys are pros. Re the pen, I get that, but ... he's pitching the guys that the front office gave him.
4:10
I would also strongly contest that he's the reason they are ten games under rather than a few games over.
Generally, my view is that most of what a manager really does is hidden from view. It's in the clubhouse. It's heavily influenced by conversations with the front office re player usage that we don't know about.

No way

You mentioned Rendon being a Texas guy, but when is the last time we saw a free agent actually sign with his hometown team when the team wasn't also offering the biggest deal available?
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
We don't always know. Sometimes that could influence the early developments in negotiations. Different players have different motivations.
4:13
Andrew Miller said very clearly he chose the Yankees over more $ from the Astros because he wanted to have spring training in Florida. Maybe he's an exception, but it can matter to some guys. It's hard to read Rendon.

6/180 for Rendon on the low side or high side?
Jeffrey Todd
4:14
I think it's in the range of reasonable outcomes, perhaps toward the upper bound.

Don’t you think it’s a little absurd that Dj LeMahieu isn’t even being talked about for MVP? With all the Yankees injuries, how do you not mention him ?
Jeffrey Todd
4:14
I don't know, Mike Trout is way better than him, regardless of how many Yankees got hurt.

Hey Jeff, love your work. Which teams would you most love to see make the world series this year?
Jeffrey Todd
4:16
Well thanks, Frank. See, if you fawn over me you get your question answered!!!

I don't really care beyond wanting to see great baseball. But man ... an Astros-Dodgers repeat would be pretty sweet to watch.

Reds have to add to their bullpen for 2020. Who should be targets & does Raisel stay as closer?
Jeffrey Todd
4:18
They do need to add to their bullpen. Side note: I remember getting pushback for suggesting their 2019 pen was anything but superlative ... didn't think it was this bad, but the likely regression was there for all to see.
4:19
What I think they need to avoid is the recent Rockies experience of overpaying guys to pitch in a tough environment. It'll be hard. Notice they gave multi-year deals to Hughes and Hernandez when most teams wouldn't. That was b/c of Great American and the fact that the Reds weren't contending. Now, they can promise a chance to play for a team that's trying to win, but they might have to go beyond their comfort zone to get arms. It'll be tricky.
