Does Semien get an extension contract this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
4:38
He's 29. Way off the charts career year. Have to be somewhat wary of some regression, though the A's probably feel he has legitimately put it all together. Real issue is ... how can this team promise enough to get him to forego free agency after that season?
Maybe there are some ways you can see it coming together, but you can also see some ways in which they decide to trade him.

Gerrit Cole, any reason he would take a team that does not offer the highest contract?  Hear fan theories about strongly preferring west coast, so Teams X, Y, Z aren't real contenders.  Assuming no one does something bonkers like $300M, can the Phillies just make the largest offer and win?
Jeffrey Todd
4:40
We don't know his exact motivations. If he'd prefer his native California, then that probably gives a leg up to teams out west. But money talks, too ... everyone assumed Corbin was going to New York, and maybe even he did, until the Nats offered way more and he realized he could afford to take the Acela whenever he felt like going to NYC.
Rockies Rebuild?
4:41
If they rebuild do they attempt to trade Trevor Story for pitching?
Jeffrey Todd
4:43
I mean ... they are in a very finicky spot. But at the same time, they have some elite talent and they can just hope that it sort of saves the day for them. I don't see how they can blow things up right now in a reasonable manner. Hard to do a lot in terms of acquisitions, but a rebuild doesn't feel right either.
4:44
Trouble for those not entirely familiar ... Rox have pushed their payroll up into new territory, a good bit of it on underperforming relief pitching. Meanwhile the rotation collapsed and the offense has loads of questions besides the core stars.
4:45
Tough spot. But they can bet on the talent and some good fortune and hope to be competitive-ish again.

A’s 2020 rotation Manaea, Montas, Fries, Puk, Luzardo
Jeffrey Todd

Fries, Fires, Fiers ... whatever, we got you
I would suspect at least one veteran arm is added to that group.

How high can the Mets' asking price for Thor be this offseason. Less control and he's coming off a very mediocre season. What would it take for the Padres to pry him loose?
Jeffrey Todd
4:50
Have to assume the Mets will keep trying to contend. So the Pads aren't going to be able to get him for a bunch of prospects. If the Friars really want him and the Mets really want to move on, there's probably a way to a deal, but it may involve a third team.
Starling Marte

Will I be throwing Marte partays in the 'Burgh next season?
Jeffrey Todd
4:51
Only when his team plays @ PNC

Troy Tulo
4:52
In a recent chat the blue jays financials came up and it was mentioned about still paying Tulo. How long will they pay Tulo even though he is retired?  Would the same apply if Pujols or Miggy retired before their contract expired?
Jeffrey Todd
4:53
If a player just up and retires, his team would be off the hook. Tulo was released first, so the money is owed regardless.

The Padres brought on Dave Cameron in 2018, but they don't seem to be an analytically savvy team. Are they trending in that direction or are they failing in that department?
Jeffrey Todd
4:54
I don't know, but I just enjoy assuming without any basis that Dave is at fault for anyything that goes wrong in San Diego.
4:55
In seriousness, I am sure they have a hefty analytics presence. But I couldn't tell you exactly where they are on the curve.

How much of Myers salary do Pods have to eat to move him?
Jeffrey Todd
4:57
How much do you think he'd get as a free agent? He'd probably be a one-year deal bounceback contract type of guy. But if he just went for the biggest deal possible, at 28 years of age, with his history and most recent season ... like 2/15 or something? Maybe?
4:58
So, "much of the contract" would be the answer, I think. Probably some teams that would like to take a chance on him but doubt any would pay a big fee for the rights to do so.

Angels aren't contenders or rebuilders - so what do they do? Spend crazy on pitching to try to compete with Astros in 2020? Would they really fire Ausmas after 1 yr to bring in Maddon?
Jeffrey Todd
5:03
I don't know whether there's anything to the managerial whispers, but that ain't gonna turn things around by itself. Not even close.
They need multiple, quality arms. Whether that costs dollars, prospects, or both.
jeff, like, krampus or something

Is Ken Giles + for Edwin Diaz a thing that could transpire? And who/what's the +?
Jeffrey Todd
5:04
I'm pretty sure the example of Ken Giles himself is why the Mets can't do this sort of thing.
Gerritt Cole

8 - $280 out of line now?

Yeah. I don't think we're going to see prior SP mega-deals blown out of the water after a few quieter winters.

I haven’t heard you or Steve tell us how good Chris archer is In awhile; could you do that today? It makes me laugh every time
Jeffrey Todd
5:07
I doubt whether I've said anything particularly notable about Archer, but please go back and find the most egregious examples and email them to me for consideration. Seriously.
5:08
I am glad to acknowledge that he never did get his results back in line with his peripherals, and that he has fallen apart of late. Probably still talent there to tap into -- I think the Bucs will tender him and try to get it sorted -- but obviously it hasn't worked out (to put it mildly).
