So ... this offseason could start to get fun. There are some teams that might be feeling real pressure to ramp it up. White Sox are definitely one -- perhaps the one. (Angels, Rangers, Reds are others.) I expect CWS to be in on the top of the market guys, up to and including Cole/Rendon, at least to a point.
7:52
Now, will they get them? I don't know. (Obviously, but you know what I mean.) You could also imagine CWS being the team that jumps out and throws big money at Josh Donaldson, reasoning that he'll be a huge spark and really good. Ditto Bumgarner. Those guys could be splurg-y with less possibility for brutal future commitments. White Sox and others could drive the market for those players in ways we haven't seen in the last few years.
Joe Maddon
7:52
Why haven’t the Angels hired me yet?
Jeffrey Todd
7:53
Don't forget there's more to this than just one side liking the other. Maddon has been paid quite well in Chicago and he'll want to gain as much leverage as possible. Halos are on the other side of that dance.

What could the M's realistically get for Vogey or Santana?
Jeffrey Todd
7:54
Likely not enough for it to be worthwhile. Better to hang onto them as affordable guys who could be fairly productive.

Do you guys ever consider doing away with your comment section on the articles? Been straight trollville for awhile now. Real baseball fans can’t even have intelligent conversations anymore. I’ve been a diehard of this site forever, but that’s one aspect that has lost its appeal.
Jeffrey Todd
7:56
We wish the comments didn't have that element. It's a pain to deal with and takes away from the experience for everyone. But it's also all but impossible to police, so instead we focus on trying to keep things within our rules to the extent possible.
There are some who like that combativeness, I guess, so I guess it might work for them. I would like to think there's still room for good discussions, but ... let's just say the issue isn't isolated to our corner of the internet.

Finally someone asks the important question.
Chicken tortilla and it was lovely, thank you
Dodger Ken

After the disrespect shown to him in Game 5, when he played mop-up to Joe Kelly, can Kenley Jansen be on the same team as Dave Roberts again?
Jeffrey Todd
7:58
People have gotten over worse. If he wants, Kenley can opt out. The Dodgers would certainly welcome it. Maybe he rebounds with a restful winter but he really declined and the team obviously noticed.

How much salary will the Rockies have to eat to unload Wade Davis?  No way they can bring him back after this year's meltdowns.  Maybe his decent numbers away from Coors Field will give him some value?
Jeffrey Todd
8:01
The way to think about this is to ask what he'd make in free agency. Zero chance he'd get more than one year and it's really unclear if he'd get much if any salary guaranteed, just given how brutal it was. Couple million? So ... he's at most a salary swap candidate.

Starling Marte to the Indians?
Jeffrey Todd
8:02
I just looked at Marte's market and didn't included CLE https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/10/finding-a-match-in-a-starling-m...
With Mercado up the middle they have a piece there. And Marte is going to cost prospects as well as cash -- not super cheap. Don't really see it given where that org has headed in the payroll dept.
Scared of Commitment
8:03
Do you ever see a day where a small market club who feels like they’re a legit WS contender(here’s looking at you MIN / OAK / MIL) go after a bonafide ace on a one year deal at like $50M+? Like would that number get Cole’s attention this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
8:03
fifty?!
Seems steep.
8:04
Thing with Cole is ... if he's THAT good, then he's getting monster long-term deals, so why not do that instead?
8:05
Not sure why the small market teams would be the ones to try this, unless they had an oddball year where they really reset salary and had a great team. More likely we'd see one of the behemoths do this when they are trying to ramp out of a rebuild -- say, where the Phillies were last winter.
8:06
It'd probably have to be with a high-end older player. Like, say Verlander hadn't signed his extension and wasn't sure how long he wanted to keep playing. Turned in a Cy Young-ish season then just said "highest bidder gets me." Then I guess you could start to imagine something like that.
A's Fan
8:07
What do you see the A's doing about second base? Neuse showed some potential there, but not a lot of power. Did Profar do enough in the WC game for A's brass to feel there's something worth salvaging there?
Jeffrey Todd
8:07
Lots of free agents they could bring in to partner with one or more existing guys. ERIC SOGARD RETURNS
8:08
As I noted earlier, there are just a ton of second baggers that have had success but aren't likely to score huge contracts. Howie Kendrick, Brock Holt, Jason Kipnis, Jonathan Schoop, Ben Zobrist ... among others.
Dodger Ken
8:09
A big relief pitcher signing is "low risk"? Diaz, Kimbrel...are you serious?
Jeffrey Todd
8:10
Relative to a big SP/position player signing, yes, yes it is. The Dodgers could easily spend $250 mil annually if they wanted. Paying Aroldis $20 mil for 3 years isn't going to kill them. Relative.

Will the fact that Harper and Machado were good but not great this year make teams more reluctant to hand out a big contract this year to somebody like Rendon?
Jeffrey Todd

Thank you for spearheading my political campaign.
I don't think so. Every guy is different.

I like Soto more than acuna longterm am I crazy ?
Jeffrey Todd
8:12
Not necessarily. Soto has a higher floor as a hitter. But don't sleep on Acuna's field/run floor and overall greater upside.
