I crunched the numbers, and it looks like, based on the arbitration projections you guys posted, the Astros will be ~$24 million over the luxury tax threshold...assuming they let everyone walk and don't sign anyone...how much trouble are they in next offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
8:15
It's not trouble, just a fun new challenge for Luhnow and co.
Immense talent.

Is the Phillies managing job less attractive because most of the coaching staff has already been invited back?
Jeffrey Todd
8:17
I don't think so. Managers just don't have the pull they once did, so by and large you have to get with that program if you want that job.

any chance the mets re-sign wheeler? quite a lot of potential in the 5 man rotation that would result (assuming Syndergaard is not dealt)...
Jeffrey Todd
8:18
Not sure they have the cash they'll need for that. And they will want to recoup a pick after dealing away lots of good talent.

Does Cincinnati have the payroll space to go after Cole or Strasburg? No link to them yet but either one would make their rotation one of the best in the game.
Jeffrey Todd
8:19
I doubt they can go quite that far.

tigers would be selling low to trade boyd this offseason, yes?   leaving them very little to deal?
Jeffrey Todd
8:19
Not necessarily. I think a lot of teams will be very intrigued in the physical tools he showed.

How many teams are owned by one person and not a group and are any of those owners actually billionaires? Comment section always refers to the billionaire owners.
Jeffrey Todd
8:22
I don't know that any team is literally owned by one person ... except in the case of a corporate person. In most cases there's a group of rich people with one that has the greatest piece of the pie. Usually that person is also the principal owner who represents the team to MLB. And that's essentially what we are referring to when we refer to the "owner."

With limited contracts on the books, adding Cole would be great for any team.  But does a Twins rotation of Berrios, Bumgarner, Odorizzi, Pineda (when suspension is done), Dobnak/Grateral/Smeltzer seem reasonable.
Jeffrey Todd
8:24
That means paying for 3 pretty decent FAs -- we see Pineda as a guy who'll draw real interest -- and may be more than they want to do? It doesn't sound like a top-end staff. We'll see where they go with the payroll but they are sure to explore some creative possibilities, not just dangle cash at veteran free agents.

I think you’re way off on your Daniel Hudson outrage. These people play baseball to be able to sustain and enjoy quality time with the family. They play so they can live, not live to play. He absolutely should be with his wife and newborn. Nothing more important than that.
Jeffrey Todd
8:25
To be very clear on this: I provided a quote from David Samson, former Marlins president, in which HE (not me) said all that gibberish about Hudson.
I then said that Samson is a complete buffoon, which he is, for that asinine comment.
8:26
I have 3 kids and a heart that still beats, if only a little bit, so I absolutely think Hudson should be with his wife and new baby.

Jonathan Villar's arbitration estimates are 10.4 million, which seems high. Do the Orioles sign and move him or non-tender him?
Jeffrey Todd
8:27
It's because of the big number of plate appearances he has accrued. I had written about him like a tender-and-trade candidate but it does feel pretty hefty. Leaning toward a non-tender I think. Maybe they try to get him to agree to a lower salary instead beforehand?

Is Aaron Hicks really a viable option to jump right back into super high leverage baseball after 2 months away recovering from injury? Is there any precedent for a player missing that much time at the end of a season and making the roster for a championship round?
Jeffrey Todd
8:28
Kyle Schwarber!!!
Out all season, then in for the World Series.
8:29
Not like they'd have to put Hicks in a major role right off the jump. Just a reserve and see how it goes.

Jay's trade Giles yes or no
Jeffrey Todd
8:29
Yes. They should be adding players to this roster, but hanging onto a valuable closer in his last year? I'd rather cash him in.
