Who is a better Canadian hitter. Larry Walker or Joey Votto?
Mark P
10:40
Tough call.  In terms of being just a pure hitter, I'd say Votto but it's close.  Walker is the better overall player due to his throwing arm, baserunning, and defense (attention HOF voters!)

10:41
What's the likelihood of either Joe Adell and/or Wander Franco starting the year in the majors?
Mark P
10:42
Franco is zero, and Adell is next to zero.  In Adell's case, service time will play a factor, but the Angels can also legitimately argue that he could need more minor league time (Adell only has 27 games at Triple-A)
Jackie Bradley
10:43
Any news on me? I was supposed to be a hot trade commodity
Mark P
10:44
Not much news, and I think a lot of teams might be wary of Bradley's lackluster defensive numbers from 2019.
10:45
It's one thing if a guy can't hit but is an elite fielder, but if a guy can't really hit or field, that isn't a player (past track record aside) teams are willing to give up much for in a trade
Pirate ponderer
10:45
Let's trade Archer.  Who can we get in return?
Mark P
10:47
I'm not sure the Pirates would trade Archer at this point, since they'd be selling low.  Unless there's one team out there and feels strongly enough about his potential or thinks he needs a change of scenery, I don't see a rival club offering enough to make Pittsburgh feel it'd be worth it

I've been asking for a while, at least six times between all of you who host a live chat.   What does a quality control coach do? I never heard of it before this year.
Mark P
10:48
The specific duties vary from team to team, but in general, it's usually sort of a "coach of everything," or someone who is making sure all the other coaches are on the same page with the messages being given to the players

10:49
If the Reds don't want to pay up for Castellanos or Ozuna and still strike out on Dickerson, would Souza be a good fit? He can hit pretty well and wouldn't have to play every day so there's less of an injury risk.
Mark P
10:49
Souza could also work, sure.  Not sure Reds fans would consider that to be a big move, but Souza could still emerge if he's healthy

Tribe payroll, what is the plan ?
Mark P
10:52
It's a little under $97.2MM, as per Roster Resource.  This would be the smallest Indians payroll in four years, and I wonder if some more trimming could still happen (Lindor trade, Hand trade, etc.)

Cleveland seems to be trying to stay competitive while still cutting payroll and undergoing a bit of a roster churn.  It's tough to manage, though made easier by the fact that they're seemingly able to produce a very good homegrown pitcher every season

Angels trade marsh for Price and 36 million in cash , would that work?
Mark P
10:53
I don't think the Angels or any team would trade a Marsh-level prospect for Price.  All Boston is trying to do in a Price deal is save as much money as possible...getting actual prospect value back would be a real coup for Chaim Bloom and company.
Leaving Cleveland
10:54
With the lease and tv contract ending in 2023 there are strong rumors starting to circulate that the Cleveland Indians could be setting themselves up for a sale and a move. Does it explain the payroll cutting?
Mark P
10:55
We'll know a sale could be in the offing if Lindor and Clevinger are traded for Jake Taylor, Willie Mays Hayes, and the Wild Thing
Andrew Friedman
10:56
Am I crazy to think Joc + Seager + Gonsolin + Ruiz + Rios gets it done for Clevinger?
Mark P
10:56
I'd imagine that would do it, sure.  But the Dodgers aren't giving away that haul for only Clevinger

10:57
What do you think of the tigers recent moves.i.e.schoop and cron? Will they sign more.
Mark P
10:57
I like both signings.  Schoop and Cron are productive MLB-level regulars that can help the Tigers, even if they're still miles away from contention
Hoyer
10:59
Happy Holidays. I’m thinking I could trade Bryant, Contreras, and Heyward to get my payroll straight, then turn around and have a couple MLB ready prospects and ample money next offseason (Lester, Q off the books). Am I crazy? And who are the takers?
Mark P
11:00
(This would be Cubs GM Jed Hoyer)

If you can find a way to trade Heyward, more power to you.  But overall, I do think Bryant or Contreras (and mayyyybe both) could be dealt before Opening Day
Obligatory note that the Cubs' "payroll crunch" and "luxury tax concerns" are ridiculous since the team is rolling in money.
Enrique Martinez
11:01
As it stands will the Dbacks make the playoffs? Are they done making moves? Do they have enough money for Castellanos or maybe bullpen upgrade?
Mark P
11:02
Not sure if they have enough for Castellanos after already landing MadBum, but some relief additions should be feasible

The D'Backs look like wild card contenders again, though I doubt they'll mount a serious challenge to the Dodgers' NL West dominance
Max
11:03
Mike Rizzo seemingly didn't make a bid at Betances or Cesar Hernandez among other potentially useful pieces. Just how much IS he constrained by the Lerners' weird spending edicts?
Mark P
11:05
"Constrained" isn't really the right word since the Nationals haven't exactly shied away from spending big money.  But I'm sure the Nats are exploring all options, and might be waiting until later in the offseason to strike.  "Hey, join the World Series champs" is a pretty solid pitch to make to any remaining free agents who might be weighing late offers from multiple teams
DAVE H.
11:06
If the twins cant get Donaldson what do you think of them getting Castellanos to play first base?
Mark P
11:07
He's never played a game at first base, as much as many pundits have figured he'd end up at 1B eventually due to his defensive shortcomings.  Twins might prefer a more reliable proper first baseman, as much as Castellanos' bat would even further bolster that lineup

11:08
What would a potential Price to Toronto trade realistically look like. I can't imagine Benintendi being involved, can he?
Mark P
11:09
Not sure if Price-to-Toronto is even on the table any more, in the wake of the Ryu signing.  And I'd guess the Red Sox still value Benintendi enough that they wouldn't move him to accommodate a salary dump.  Remember, Boston is concerned about losing Betts next winter and they want to move Bradley right now, so they probably see Benintendi as their outfield linchpin

11:09
What do Phillies need and do U C anything more being added
Mark P
11:10
At least one more starting pitcher, and some bullpen help.
Joc Pederson Fan
11:11
I love me some Joc Pederson but have never been able to buy his jersey because he plays for a rival team. Will my Christmas wish of him being traded to an AL team come true?
Mark P
11:12
Pederson is an obvious trade chip for LA, and I'd guess his name has come up in a lot of discussions.  It could be that the Dodgers are looking to package him as part of a larger deal, before exploring lower-level one-for-one types of trades
11:13
And free free to buy his jersey anyway!  No reason you can't rock a jersey just because a guy plays for another club (unless it's one of your team's arch-rivals)
