Kyle Gibson received 3 years, $30 million. Why didn’t the Twins match it, but chose to resign Pineda, who’s suspension will carry into the 2020 season?
Mark P
11:15
Maybe Minnesota likes Pineda more, or wasn't willing to go to three years for Gibson?
Henry Cotto
11:15
If I were to say Jo Adelle was to be had for any superstar to pair up with trout. Who would you pick Mark?
Mark P
11:16
Juan Soto.

It should be noted, when a team says a prospect is "untouchable," this doesn't mean that the Angels would turn down an offer of Adell for Soto.  Obviously they'd make THAT sort of deal, not that Washington would ever offer it.
Ryan
11:17
with the yanks and blue jays upgrading and TB rotation potentially healthy again Red Sox could be looking at a 4th
Mark P
11:18
There was a 17-win gap between Boston and Toronto last year, so I wouldn't be too downcast about the Red Sox quite yet.  If the Sox get a bit better health from their pitching, they could absolutely win a wild card
Joel Youngblood
11:19
Mark, how do you think Ross will fair as a first year manager with the Cubs?
Mark P
11:21
Hard to say, since Ross has no coaching background and it's sometimes hard for a player to go from team leader/"one of the boys" to a manager role.

That said, Ross is one of those guys who has been tabbed as a future manager for years.  He seems to be as respected as anyone in baseball, and you figure the front office wouldn't have made this move if they weren't confident in Ross, given the increasing amount of pressure in Wrigleyville to get things on track
Phillip Ervin - reds
11:22
I was one a top 100 prospect and haven’t ever really gotten an extended look, despite good MiLB numbers.  What are the reds doing with me
Mark P
11:23
Good question.  Winker/Ervin could be a strong platoon for the Reds and could take care of left field right there.
Moose
11:23
What's been the most surprising FA signing to you so far? Keuchel's dollars and Ryu with the Blue Jays are up there for me.
Mark P
11:24
Ryu/Jays or Moustakas/Reds are my top two.  Ryu because I didn't think Toronto was going to make such a big step so soon, and Moose because his suddenly getting a four-year deal was a real shocker after two winters of one-year offers.
11:25
Moustakas also being signed seemingly as an everyday second baseman was also an eye-opener
Cashman
11:26
Frazier, Garcia, Florial for Hader.
Mark P
11:26
(Yankees GM Brian Cashman)

No way the Yankees offer that much

I see a lot of people talking about best contracts of the last 10 years. Matt Holliday's extension with the Cardinals has to be ranked right up there doesn't it?
Mark P
11:28
Absolutely.  Holliday hit .288/.377/.486 over the length of a seven-year, $120MM deal, though he ran into some injury problems over the last couple of years.

Do you think the active investigation has caused the Astros’ quiet offseason?
Mark P
11:29
Quite likely
Grievance
11:29
Does Kris Bryant have a valid point?  If he wins, will this change everything?
Mark P
11:31
A win would be major news, as then any prospect over the last several years who has been kept in the minors for transparent service time reasons could also file a grievance.

The Cubs are expected to win the hearing since, by the letter of the law, they didn't do anything wrong.  But I'd expect the service-time issue will be a major talking point during CBA negotiations
Sam
11:31
How do you rate the Cards signing of Kwang-Hyun-Kim?
Mark P
11:32
Seems like a solid, low-risk type of move.
Chicago's Goat
11:33
What are chances Theo gets canned if Cubs are terrible again?
Mark P
11:33
The Cubs weren't "terrible" last year, to be fair.  But unless things totally crater in 2020, I doubt Epstein is fired. He is only under contract through 2021.
Brave
11:34
What would it take to trade for Nathan Eovaldi
Mark P
11:36
Eovaldi is an interesting case, since while Bloom wasn't responsible for that extension, he has ties to him from Tampa Bay.

If the Sox are facing such a luxury tax crunch, Eovaldi might be unloaded to any team that agrees to take the portion of his contract that Boston finds acceptable.

Super Bowl picks?
Mark P
11:36
Saints and Ravens
Blake
11:37
I need some A’s news. Do they sign an outfielder or reliever or keep the roster they have?
Mark P
11:37
Probably pretty close to standing pat, though the A's are usually good to add a reliever or two.
Deadlines are Fun!
11:38
What do you think of having a free agent signing deadline or period to make the Winter Meetings even more exciting?
Mark P
11:38
I'm actually against it.  Having a free agent deadline would inevitably lead to some players getting squeezed out of fair contracts.

What would be your walk up song?

"Golden Years" by David Bowie

Do you think any actual execs ask questions or peruse these chat threads?
Mark P
11:40
That would amuse me to no end.  "Geez, I've talked to my staff and my scouts about this trade offer....but let's see what the guy on Trade Rumors thinks."

Has there been any clarification on how the Cespedes renegotiation affects the Mets CBT math? W/Betances in the fold it seems the Mets are over - or will be if any of their many incentivized players hit some modest marks which is something this Mets fan never thought he'd see.  Am I dreaming - just pinched myself and think I'm awake.
Mark P
11:43
Roster Resource has the Mets with a $202MM luxury tax number, so while they're not over yet, they're pretty close to $208MM.

This Cespedes case is a very unusual situation, not sure how it impacts the tax

Any chance the Blue Jays could swing a trade with the Pirates for Marte & Archer?
