Ozuna is a very good defensive LF, hardly a "mostly DH."  Castellanos isn't much of a right fielder, but the Rangers could get away with him in the field for the one remaining year of Choo's contract

What's the latest on Chirinos? Was said to be close to making a decision.

Could be taking an extra bit of time to re-evaluate after Jason Castro signed, making Chirinos the clear #1 catcher remaining.  Maybe another team offers Chirinos a few more dollars now that the market has thinned

Brock Holt a fit for the Mets?
Mark P
10:38
I think Holt is a great fit on a lot of teams, New York included

Your thoughts on teams extending players like Eloy who have not played a mlb game?  Pushing the envelope too far?
Mark P

I can see the logic in wanting to lock up a prospect that is a real blue-chipper, and one that the team knows will be around for years.

How can you tell whether a player was sent down to control service time or because he really wasn't ready?
Mark P

In some cases, a team has a legitimate reason to keep a guy at Triple-A, such as the player hasn't had much Triple-A experience, or he struggles in his first MLB stint, etc.
10:43
In other cases, however, I think some executives hurt themselves by being (if anything) too willing to discuss prospects, since they'll inevitably say something that makes little sense, and fans immediately seize on as an excuse to mask the service-time reason.

And really, both could be true.  Teams could want to limit service time AND feel a player still has a couple of things to work on, it's just that executives have to be careful about being too transparently false about it

The Dodgers will not make a trade prior to the season. Anyone reading his recent interview closely should have picked up on a key phrase as a hint that they aren't going to get Lindor or Betts or anyone else of substance prior to the season. When he referenced going over the luxury tax threshold, he stated, "This won't be the team we start the postseason with." He referred to the postseason rather than the "season" because they've shifted gears to the summer trade deadline rather than working something out now. I'm not saying they wouldn't do something if it fell in their lap, but I think their focus has clearly shifted. Agree or disagree with my assertion?

It's possible, but I interpreted that as Kasten actually being focused on October, perhaps as a response to Plaschke's assertions that the Dodgers didn't care as much as they should about winning a title
10:46
As in, they're focused on the postseason so any moves they make (whether now or at the July deadline) are directed towards winning the Series

Do you guys take shifts at MLBTR or do you basically just put things out as you hear it and how do you decipher who gets what breaking news
Mark P

Different writers are on different shifts, so whoever happens to be on the site when a big item breaks, they cover it
