Do you think it would be wise for the pirates to trade Josh Bell? A Scott Boras client scares me as a pirates fan. How would you handle the situation?
Mark P
10:29
Bell is controlled through 2022 via arbitration, so the Pirates are under no pressure to move him anytime soon.  Barring a shift in financial philosophy from ownership, it doesn't seem likely that Bell will remain with the Pirates over the long-term, but that doesn't mean they should jump to deal him now.

Owings, Butera and now Jimenez? Why not rebuild now for the Rockies
Mark P
10:32
The Rox are just a year removed from consecutive playoff berths, and they have so much money invested in the team that they probably feel they *can't* rebuild without giving it one more try in 2020.  If they struggle again (which seems likely, Dick Monfort's wild 94-win prediction notwithstanding), I can see some big changes being made, perhaps starting in the front office

Why haven't the Yankees locked up Gleyber to a long term deal?
Mark P
10:36
I have no doubt the Yankees will explore an extension with Torres' agents this spring, if they haven't broached the subject already.  Torres is under control for five years still, so there isn't any hurry, though his arbitration numbers will get big since he's a Super Two player.  Yankees might prefer cost certainty now, but with the luxury tax as an ongoing concern, they might prefer to keep Torres as a dirt-cheap asset as long as they can

Your opinion on the proposed Rod Stripling trade? I believe this will be a great move for the halos with his tem control remaining.
Mark P
10:40
Stripling has always seemed like a bit of an underrated gem, since on any other team, he would've been a rotation stalwart by now.

I do think we need to learn more about what exactly the Angels are giving up in the deal, since Stripling/Joc/Pages for just Rengifo indicates that something else substantial must be going to the Dodgers

Yanks will win the division but i could oddly see toronto finishing second with the moves and core they have in place
Mark P
10:41
A lot of the Jays' young stars would have to break out immediately for a second place finish to happen, which I guess isn't totally out of the question since the Vlad/Bichette/Biggio/Gurriel group has so much talent.  But, the Rays are a stacked team and the Red Sox are still really good even without Betts and Price, so second place for the Jays is a tall order

10:42
If a player signs an extension that starts in 2021,  does that impact his AAV for luxury tax purposes in 2020, or does the luxury tax impact start in 2021?
Mark P
10:42
The tax impact would start in 2021 since that's the year the new contract starts.

Who is playing center for the Jays in 2020. Please don't say Teoscar Hernandez
Mark P
10:44
Grichuk or (as much as you may dislike the idea) Hernandez, and the Jays will probably give Fisher a look too.  Outside of actual outfielders, Biggio will get some time in CF as well since Toronto has interest in making him a super-util type

Any chance the Dodgers re-engage on Lindor and/or Clevinger?
Mark P
10:46
Maybe if they relent on giving up guys like Lux or May, but Cleveland is probably content to stand pat after unloading Kluber.

A’s most underrated team?

how about robbie ray for nick sentzel? dbacks need to get something for him NOW
Mark P
10:48
First off, the Reds aren't dealing Senzel for one year of Robbie Ray, so this is a moot point.

But why do you feel the D'Backs desperately need to move Ray?  They're trying to win in 2020, and moving Ray now would create a big hole in the rotation.

Even with Betts, do we still need pitching?
Mark P
10:49
Assuming this deal happens and nothing major arm-wise is going to the Angels in the Pederson trade, the Dodgers' SP options are Buehler, Kershaw, Price as the top three, and then picking from May, Gonsolin, Urias, Nelson, Wood for the final two spots, and then another layer of prospects like Dennis Santana under that.
10:50
Seems like a lot of pretty good pitching to me, and there's nothing stopping LA from adding another veteran at the deadline

Enough?  C. Frazier, J. Holder, A. Abreu for Kyle Schwarber?
Mark P

It's enough, but the Yankees aren't going to offer that much in the first place

10:53
With the Braves loaded OF for 2020, do you see a path for Pache to play in the bigs before 2021?
Mark P
10:55
I could definitely see Pache in the bigs sometime this season.  It's funny, you call them "loaded," when I'm often sent questions asking whether the Braves have enough in the outfield!

Why are the cardinals putting so much faith in matt carpenter bouncing back? With both ozuna and martinez gone. He almost has to be the player he was a couple yeara ago
Mark P
10:58
The Cards don't have much choice, since Carpenter has a no-trade clause and doesn't have a lot of trade value anyway after his 2019 season.
That Carpenter extension seemed curious at the time (since the Cards had just locked up first base with Goldschmidt) and it seems particularly ill-advised now

In regard to the Red Sox concern over Graterol, can a team really look at a pitcher's medical records and determine he is a reliever and not a future starter?  What could possibly reveal that information?
Mark P
11:00
Scott Boras (Graterol's agent) has made this same point, saying that his client has been given a clean bill of health from doctors.

Why should we add another top 5 prospect for Kenta? Good, but not a true Ace
Mark P
11:02
"True aces" are hard to come by, and Maeda is a good pitcher that improves Minnesota's rotation as a whole.  Plus, I'm sure the Twins still think Berrios can take another step to that "true ace" level

11:02
If the Giants were willing to Will Wilson another deal and take on the entire Wil Myers contract what level of prospect could they hope to get?
Mark P
11:04
There's an awfully big gap between Cozart's $12.167MM remaining salary and the $61MM owed to Myers.  The Giants would want someone like Gore or Patino for taking on all that money, and that's not something the Padres have shown they're willing to do
