If the people suspended for the sign stealing scandal have been fired, does that mean their suspensions will begin if they are rehired?
Mark P
11:04
Correct

You mentioned the red Sox revenue stream but isn't there something to be said for not continuously paying the luxury tax and and dropping in the draft order?
Mark P
11:08
A drop from something like 28th to 38th in the draft order isn't exactly costing a team premium talent. And two years of luxury tax overages have cost the Sox a grand total of around $25MM, which is a pretty small extra price to pay for a two-year stint that included a World Series title
11:10
I'm not saying that teams shouldn't try to avoid tax payments if possible, but treating them as a major burden is pretty ridiculous when the money involved in tax penalties is so relatively minor.  And, in Boston's case, for ownership to greenlight big contracts for Sale and Eovaldi last winter (given all the health red flags for those pitchers) and then consider the luxury tax to be such a concern that Mookie Betts "has" to be dealt is pretty hard to swallow
Matt
11:10
The luxury tax has to be abolished as part of the new CBA...right?
Mark P
11:11
I don't see how the owners would give it up, after fighting for so long for some kind of ceiling on player salaries
Albert Perez
11:12
what will it cost the A's to land a frontline starter who will be a free agent at the trade deadline
Mark P
11:13
Hard to project something like that given the salary of this hypothetical frontline rental starter will be a factor for Oakland
Gonzo
11:13
I'd sure like to see the Giants trading for Dominic Smith of the Mets. The Mets could use Jeff Samardzija and the Giants could add one of their top shortstop 18-year-olds.
Mark P
11:13
Smith/young shortstop is way more than the Mets will give up for one year for the Shark
Nick
11:13
Could the red sox have done more earlier (like three years ago) to sign Mookie like alot of other teams have been able to do with their superstars to avoid having to do this?
Mark P
11:14
Betts has been pretty steadfast in his desire to become a free agent, and we've heard reports for years that Boston has tried to extend him.

How much do you think the clubhouse culture changes year to year? I'd hate to sign a long term contract to then have the clubhouse turn into the Astros.
Mark P
11:16
Depends on the personalities in the clubhouse, of course, but it isn't surprising to see big shifts in mood from year to year.  Losing can turn things sour quickly, as you might expect.

Does Lux for Hader get it done or does Milwaukee need more?
Mark P
11:17
The Brewers likely do that, but if the Dodgers aren't giving up Lux for Lindor, they sure aren't giving him up for a reliever
Dusty B.
11:18
Will I make it to the HoF as a manager if I get 2,000 wins even though I might not win a WS.
Mark P
11:19
I'd always wondering why the HOF necessarily has to specify a person who is notable as both a player and as a manager (i.e. Dusty, or Gil Hodges) as just one of those two things.  Considering the breadth of Baker's career as a very good manager and a player, the sum total would be enough to merit enshrinement, in my view
Angel Fanatic
11:19
Pederson to Angel play OF and 1B and with LaStella in mix at 1B does Albert sit a lot?
Mark P
11:20
If the Angels are serious about contending, they probably can't have Pujols as a regular any longer
Lefty
11:20
Samardzija and Cueto. Would you consider them to have good trade value for immediate deal? Or are they more likely to be dealt in July?
Mark P
11:21
I wouldn't be entirely shocked if Samardzija was dealt before Opening Day.  Cueto, maybe more of a deadline candidate since teams will want to see how he fares now that he's fully back from Tommy John surgery

Do the angels have to many outfielders? What's the plan when adell comes up? Ohtani dh, adell rf, trout cf, Upton/joc lf platoon? Does someone play 1b?
Mark P
11:24
Joc has played a bit of 1B, but overall, I see that trade as the Halos giving themselves some depth in case Adell struggles a bit in Triple-A, or struggles after his inevitable callup

Any news on JR realmuto extension? Do you see him Becoming a FA?

No news yet, but if you're looking for an examination of a Realmuto extension....I know a guy

Was there any rumors on Brad Hand this Offseason? Surprised the indians didnt want to dukp his salary
Mark P
11:26
No buzz at all about Hand, though you're right, he could have been a logical candidate for a move if Kluber hadn't been dealt.

Why does it seem so many Braves fans are ready to just write off Austin Riley? Last year he was the future at 3B, now it seems we have to make a trade for a “star” 3B to “fix” our lineup. He struggled badly at the end of the year, sure, but his track record and start to his career I think should be enough to justify some faith in him from the fanbase.
Mark P
11:29
Preaching to the choir here.  I think I made this point in another chat, but at this time last offseason, my chats were full of questions like "why did Atlanta spend so much money on injured Donaldson when they have Riley coming up?"

Do you think Dave Dombrowski gets another GM job?  Seems job description has changed away from him.
Mark P
11:32
I'm not the first one to speculate about this possibility, but if the Padres underachieve in 2020, Dombrowski makes sense as a replacement for Preller.
11:33
And don't forget, Dombrowski won a World Series just in 2018.  It's not like the game has passed him by

Davd Price had elbow issues before he had wrist surgery.  Are there concerns about his elbow going forward?
