Are the Cubs doing anything with the roster at the moment?
Mark P
9:38
We're going on two offseasons of Cubs fans waiting for the other shoe to drop with some huge roster-shaking trade or signing, but nothing doing.

Why would Boston want Will Myers?
Mark P
9:40
This is the other major reason why that trade rumor left me scratching my head.  It seemed like Boston was pretty set with Moreland/Chavis at first base, unless the Sox were considering playing Myers in a corner OF position.

Unless there's someone in Boston's front office that thinks Myers can blossom with a change of scenery, he doesn't make a ton of sense as a fit.

Nick Anderson is the Rays future closer or do they still go game to game, year to year?
Mark P
9:42
He's the favorite for the job right now, and if he pitches well, Tampa will stick to giving him the lion's share of saves
As much as the Rays like to play matchups all over their roster, they're also not afraid about sticking with a player who is consistently performing

Do I have any chance of extending Devers this spring so his salary this year lowers his AAV? Or should I still look to rebuild the farm by any means necessary (trading Bradley, acquiring Myers)?
Mark P
9:45
Devers isn't arb-eligible until next winter, so right now his cost-effectiveness is a major asset to a Sox team that clearly sees the luxury tax as a big obstacle.  Inking Devers to an extension only raises his AAV over every year of the deal, so his minimum salary number for tax purposes in 2020 would suddenly shoot upwards
In short, I'd guess the Sox will certainly talk numbers with Devers' camp to see if anything could be arranged, but my guess is an extension won't happen until next year

What would it take to have a legitimate shot at Joc and Stripling? Do they make sense in Jay's blue? Or is it too soon to launch on our "competitive window" and push for 85+ wins
Mark P
9:48
Joc/Stripling make a lot of sense for the Blue Jays, since Toronto is short on legit CF options and adding another quality arm is always a good idea.

Acquiring them would seem to require one Luis Rengifo-esque prospect, plus whatever the Angels were also reportedly going to be sending to the Dodgers.  The Jays have rebuilt their farm system to an extent that they might be comfortable giving up one decent prospect for three years of Stripling and Joc's final year.

Will we be bringing in anyone to cover for all our injured starters?
Mark P
9:51
Given how the Yankees' luck ran last season, they'll add some random guy and he'll suddenly become a superstar.

For a more serious answer, I think NYY likes their rotation depth enough that they'll roll the dice on Montgomery, Cessa, and company as long as they have to, especially since Paxton might not miss that much time.  Plans could obviously change, however, if news goes bad on Severino
Arte Moreno
9:52
How big of a mistake was it walking away from the Pederson trade?
Dougie Fresh
9:52
Arte Moreno said there was more to him pulling the trade for Pederson and Stripling than just impatience. Is he just trying to save face? Or is there more to it than that?
Mark P
9:52
There has to be more to it, since it isn't like the Angels immediately turned around and swung some other trade they had lined up.  Keep in mind, we don't know what else was involved on LAA's side of the swap aside from Rengifo
Kris Bryant

Thoughts on me leading off?
Mark P
9:54
Putting a guy with a .385 career OBP at the top of a lineup seems like a pretty smart idea to me

Most teams seems pretty much settled as in no big changes unless; except the Padres who appear to look for a trade that puts them in the wild card conversation; is this a general perception? And if so who can significantly upgrade them that is actually very available?
Mark P
9:56
I don't think SD is the only team in that boat.  Lots of teams (both contenders and would-be contenders) still have some pretty notable holes that would still be filled by a big acquisition.

9:57
Where do you see the Rockies finishing this year? I think everything went wrong last year and despite no roster upgrades they will improve and fight for a wildcard
Mark P
9:58
While I think the Rockies should have done something, ANYTHING notable transaction-wise this winter, your perspective has some logic to it.  If 2019 really was a Murphy's Law, year-from-hell type of season, the Rockies could improve just by with a normal amount of luck.
9:59
The problem is, I don't think their roster is good enough to compete even with "normal" luck.

Which of the bad “rebuilding” clubs has the best future outlook?
MIA w an underrated system, DET w those 3 stud pitching prospects, KC like DET but not the hype but more MLB talent or BAL w Adley and Elias? Getting ready for MLB The Show Franchise
Mark P
10:03
Of that group, Miami is quietly getting some nice young pieces in place.  The problem with the Marlins has never been talent development, of course, but rather poor upper management that prevented the team from capitalizing on (or keeping) that young talent.  With new ownership, that theoretically should no longer be a problem

Over under Yankees having more wins in 2020 than in 2019
Mark P
10:04
I'm apt to say under just because it's awfully hard to win 104 games.
Will the Yankees will more than 103 games in 2020?

Yes (18.2% | 123 votes)

No (73% | 492 votes)

They'll win exactly 103 (8.8% | 59 votes)

Is Robinson Cano immovable no matter how well he does this season?
Mark P
10:06
There's no such thing as a completely immovable contract, but Cano is up there.  That said, if he performs well and bounces back from 2019, the Mets will have more reason to want to keep him.
Mike Hazen
10:07
Am I buying or selling at the trade deadline?
Mark P
10:08
(Hazen = Arizona's GM)

Probably buying, but I could see a bit of both, depending on where the D'Backs are in the standings.
Estevão
10:08
Can someone explain to me the logic of the hypothetical Arenado-Bryant swap. To me it makes no sense
Mark P
10:10
I think a lot of people just loved the idea of a superstar-for-superstar trade, as much as it didn't seem like a fit for what the Rockies or Cubs were trying to do
Estevão
10:11
Is Max Scherzer the greatest big money FA signing since Barry Bonds?
Mark P
10:12
I don't think that's even a question at this point.  Only other real candidates are Jeter's ten-year, $189MM deal with the Yankees from 2001-10, and A-Rod's first contract (in terms of pure production, not that the Rangers didn't regret the deal in the first place)
Gallo MVP

What would Rangers need to send TB for Kiermier?
Mark P
10:13
Probably not a ton aside from salary relief
