First of all, there are only 15 teams in each league.  Secondly, under this plan, half the league would be restarting operations and going through a few weeks of spring training....all for the sake of playing three "real" games?

If this season is cancelled who is to say next year’s season wouldn’t be canceled also?
Mark P
7:58
It will all depend on how the coronavirus is being controlled by a vaccine or some other treatment by that point.
8:00
Given the vast amount of focus being placed on finding a cure or treatment for this disease that's ravaging the world, I wouldn't bet against some type of vaccine available in a year's time.  That would allow for some baseball in 2021, and we probably shouldn't get give up on hope for some kind of 2020 season
Desperate
8:01
do you think letting Donaldson go was a good idea?
Mark P
8:02
Atlanta is comfortable with Riley/Camargo for third base, and they spread their money around (Ozuna, Will Smith, Hamels, d'Arnaud) on several positions rather than splurge on Donaldson.  Time will tell if it was a sound strategy, but it makes sense on paper.
8:04
Letting JD walk also gave the Braves an extra draft pick via the qualifying offer, which is no small matter given that they gave up two picks to sign Smith and Ozuna

Could you see the Astros being willing to move Correa this offseason?  Not likely to re-sign and could bring in a decent haul.
Mark P
8:07
I could see it happening.  Correa has said in the past that he would like to test free agency rather than sign an extension (barring a huge offer from Houston, of course).  That could make him expendable in the Astros' eyes, especially since already have a lot of future money committed and might prefer to re-sign Springer or Brantley

On the plus side, neither the Rockies nor Marlins will now lose 100. Given the state of both rosters, contracts, prospects, etc., which of those two would you rather GM?
Mark P
8:09
Miami has quietly built up a pretty decent crop of young players and they have virtually no future money on the books.  If the new ownership group truly is willing to spend, they could be a sleeper team to watch in a couple of years

odds i am a cardinal after the 2021 season?
Mark P
8:11
I was a little surprised Tampa traded Liberatore in the first place, though I've learned to not doubt the Rays' judgement on trades.  Anyway, I'd guess STL will be hanging onto Liberatore since promising young arms generally aren't moved.

If the 2020 season is canceled will the cardinals be stuck with a extra year of carpenter and Fowler?
Mark P
8:12
No, 2020 would count as a year of their contracts

8:13
Do you think Justin Upton would wave his no trade clause to return to the Braves, if the Angels don’t contend this year?
Mark P
8:13
Upton might do it, but I don't see Atlanta taking on that contract
Ordinary Joe
8:14
Which is most likely to finish out their contract without being released -- Miguel Cabrera or Chris Davis?
Mark P
8:14
Miggy, he has legend status.

Will Nick C. Opt out if after 2020 even if season gets canceled?
Mark P
8:15
My guess is no.  It's anyone's guess as to what free agency will look like this winter, and Castellanos would likely opt to for the security of his current contract rather than test a very unusual market

I know it's impossible to tell how many games each team might play, but do you have an idea of how many MLB is planning? Surely it can't be a full 162. Also, during a full 162 teams could go through 1-2 losing streaks and make the postseason. Let's say only 100 games are played. Do you think that's still enough time for the best teams to gain that spot? Assuming we just play 100 games and have the playoffs as usual (2 WC teams, division winners in each division) do you see any chance for a team like us (who might truly be a year away or so) can get in?
Mark P
8:18
There is no chance at a 162-game season at this point.  Even a 100-game season is a stretch, frankly.

In any sort of shortened season, anything can happen.  If you play, say, 81 games, the Blue Jays or any team could have one hot 20-game stretch and essentially book their ticket to the postseason.

If the season is cancelled altogether, do I just take Ozuna and Hamel’s $36 mil and give it to Mookie?? It would be a big bet on one player, but a gigantic blow to the Dodgers.
Mark P
8:19
That's also $36MM that would be on the books for many years to come, which is likely too rich for the Braves' liking.  Don't forget, they have Pache and Waters in the pipeline as very promising outfielders of the future.
Clint Frazier
8:21
Can I get traded to to the Cardinals for a starter? Where I can play everyday
Mark P
8:22
The Cardinals could use more certainty in the outfield, but if they did add someone, it'd be a more proven MLB player than Frazier.
Justin M
8:22
If MLB uses spring training proximity model, will there be a universal DH?
Mark P
8:22
My guess is yes

What were your thought on SNL’s show last night?
Mark P
8:24
It was good under the circumstances.  There have definitely been worse "normal" episodes of SNL, that's for certain.
Hello

BOLD is better. Speaking of better, who are your favorites going into the season for the NL & AL?
Mark P
8:26
My favorites "were" the Dodgers and Yankees, but now, who knows.  Those teams still have the most talent, but as I posted earlier, anything can happen in a shortened season.

Will the Giants be one of the finalists for Betts, or should they spend on multiple mid to high end starters?
Mark P
8:27
I could see the Giants as a candidate to sign Betts.  Most of their big salary obligations are off the books after 2021, and as we saw with their pursuit of Bryce Harper last year, ownership is still open to big signings
Brandon

Could a lost season have any measurable impact on the CBA negotiations?
Mark P
8:30
It absolutely will.  I floated this concept in last week's chat, but it wouldn't shock me if the league and MLBPA agreed to extend the current CBA by a season or two just until things get back to some semblance of normal.  The players will have more objections to this since they hate the current CBA, but a short-term extension might be preferable than trying to negotiate a new deal under the weight of so much uncertainty

Tommy Pham will only get one full season with the Pads. Do you think pads would have been better off keeping renfroe and Edwards?
Mark P
8:32
In fairness to the Padres, i'm sure they didn't count a global pandemic into their decision-making process before acquiring Pham.  It was a justifiable move, though I like Renfroe's untapped potential and Edwards is a very interesting prospect

Red Sox will probably lose draft picks like astros?
