Will the Astro sign stealing and George Springer 's involvement impact the value of his free agent contact?
Mark P
9:40
If teams aren't willing or able to spend as much in free agency next winter, that will have a lot more to do with Springer's price tag than the cheating scandal
9:42
Plus, just looking it up now....Springer's away splits are actually better than his home splits over his career, so he has a good argument that the trash-can signals didn't overtly benefit him

Great job by all the mlbtr staff posting entertaining content, thanks! Two part question both over/under free agent contract: Mookie $350M? Springer 200M?
Mark P
9:43
I'd say under for both, just because it seems probable that teams will have less to spend.

And thanks for the kind words about the site!  It's a very unusual time for us all here at MLBTR, but it has inspired some excellent original content from my fellow staffers

How much of an effect will the new MiLB league structures affect teams prospect pools? Teams are going to lose some of their affiliates (The Jays have to give up Lansing or Vancouver). Will it get to a point where some teams have to give up a prospect because there's not enough spots in the organization for all of them?
Mark P
9:46
I'm sure a few guys will slip through the cracks, get signed by another team, and end up becoming MLB regulars.  But beyond these rare cases, I think teams have a pretty good idea which guys in their system are legit prospects and which guys are "if everything breaks right..." types or (to be impolite) roster filler.

Am I going to always bug my owner?
Mark P

As someone who has never had such a rib injury, it sounds incredibly painful, but it isn't necessarily something that can't eventually go away.

We really still have no idea if there will be baseball this season, do we?
Mark P

Nope

I love fantasy baseball. What can I do to pass this awful extended offseason?
Mark P
9:54
I once played in a "historical" fantasy league that used past stats filtered through a game simulator system.  So for instance, we'd hold a draft of players for the 1960 season, then their 1960 numbers would be run through our system delivering game results and new stats.  It was a lot of fun, especially for baseball history buffs like myself.
9:55
So if you can find one of those, then you have several decades' worth of fantasy seasons at your fingertips.

Does a shortened season hurt or help a team of largely interchangeable parts, e.g. the Brewers?
Mark P
10:00
I wrote about this last week, but given how a shortened season could be a struggle for players who are too set in their routines, players who are more adaptable (like, say, multi-position/utility types) could have an easily time adjusting.

Since the Brewers are already flexible with their pitching and were preparing for a mix-and-match strategy with their infield this year, I can see them adjusting well

As fans, we have to think the MLB season is gone. Then, if we get a season, it is a bonus season not a shorten season. That's how I'm dealing with it.
Mark P
10:01
That's a pretty good approach.

Ever been to Arizona in july? No way they can play during the day. Will have to be at 8 am and 8 pm
Mark P
10:04
This is another pretty notable factor in "the Arizona plan," especially since I think Chase Field is the only venue in the state with a domed/retractable roof.  You can run multiple games per day at Chase, but as for the teams who aren't playing there, you're either playing through intense heat or limited to later-evening games.  (8pm isn't very late, however.)

With mlb and players union having to work out issues for short season do you think this will help or hurt their  up coming contracts talks?
Mark P
10:06
The fact that the two sides are already disputing terms of that short-season agreement isn't a good sign: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/04/union-league-spar-over-interpre...

if the season never happens will I still be employed by the Angels come next spring?
Mark P
10:09
(Angels GM Billy Eppler)

It would depend on whether or not ownership had another candidate in mind.  Eppler can point to the Rendon signing as the latest step taken to bring LAA closer to contention.  This might be unusual for an executive, but I wonder if the Angels would offer a shorter extension of two years, or maybe one year with an option, to give Eppler a fair shot.

If all games are played in Florida or Texas does that mean no player is paying income tax
Mark P

Not sure I know enough about U.S. tax laws to make a legit answer.

With the season going to be shorter, could some teams that get off to a slow start begin building for next season quicker than normal, as in trades, cuts, etc?
Mark P
10:11
Certainly possible, assuming something close to the usual trade/player movement process is still in play

What happens if the Cooperstown Hall of Fame weekend is canceled?  Thoughts?
Mark P
10:12
At this point, I would think it will definitely be canceled.  I'd imagine Jeter and company would just have their inductions pushed ahead to 2021, that seems like the easiest solution

We all know how sacred it is that October baseball is playoff baseball... But what’s so wrong about the ALCS/NLCS and World Series in November? Sure it’s colder. But dire times call for dire measures, no?
Mark P
10:14
I don't think MLB has any qualms about extending the postseason into November or maybe even December, depending on circumstances.
