Joe DiMaggio made his MLB debut on this day back in 1936, so in his honour, I'll see if I can give 56 consecutive intelligent answers to questions in tonight's chat.

Does an 80 game suspension mean 80 games or half a season?
Mark P
7:19
It means 80 games.  Or, perhaps more specifically for financial and service-time purposes, it means the amount of official days of the schedule that comprise 80 games

Any new developments?
Mark P
7:21
Well, I took the cover off my air conditioner yesterday, so I'm officially calling winter over.

In terms of baseball developments, your guess is as good as mine

I know everyone loves to rag on the Mets farm overall, but how would you rank their talent from <AA?
Mark P
7:22
I'm no expert on minor league evaluation, but it seems the general feeling on the Mets' system is that they have plenty of talent, but most of their top youngsters won't be MLB-ready for a few years' yet
7:23
The guys who were closer to Major League readiness (Kelenic, Dunn, Kay) were all dealt to the Mariners and Blue Jays

If the three-division idea comes to fruition is a universal DH here to stay?
Mark P
7:25
I wouldn't have been surprised if the universal DH became a reality in the new CBA anyway, so the issue being perhaps forced for a weird 2020 format likely won't end up being a big deal.

Now, there's a chance some National League owners might again make a no-DH push once things get back to normal under the umbrella of "a return to traditional baseball" or something, but I would suspect the universal DH will come sooner rather than later

It's unbelievable that Yasiel Puig is still a free agent. Do you see anyone signing him at this point?
Mark P
7:27
I'm pretty sure he'll end up signing somewhere once the transactions freeze is lifted.

7:28
Any idea how a guy can get a season-inning like injury without sports? (Asking for a friend)
Mark P
7:29
As someone who nearly tripped over a stray piece of wood while putting his air conditioner cover in the garage, injuries can happen anywhere at any time

Who are the Tigers targeting with the No.1 Pick?
Mark P
7:30
Recent reports seem to hint that they're leaning towards Spencer Torkelson, though who knows how things might play out in this most unusual of draft years
Andrew Friedman
7:31
Does anybody want Joc or Stripling
Mark P
7:31
I'm sure plenty of teams made inquiries about those two once the Angels deal fell through (and before the transactions freeze).

Your prediction for the final standings of the 10 team, 3 division winners and wild cards.
Mark P
7:34
There are so many logistical things to be worked out (location of the games, schedule length, number of games played against division opponents, whether there would be any inter-division games, etc.) that it's hard to make predictions like this.  Plus, we don't actually know how a playoff structure would work in a three-division setup.....the three division winners get in, but how many wild cards, what kind of playoff structure, etc.

Settle a debate for me, do angels fans have a right to be upset with Pujols
Mark P
7:36
Disappointed with his overall performance, sure.  Obviously Angels fans expected to see a lot more "vintage Pujols" types of years before a decline hit.

That said, I'm hard-pressed to say that Pujols is the biggest reason the Angels have had so little playoff success in the last decade

Are You believe MLB play this season?
Mark P
7:38
At the moment, I think there will be some form of a 2020 season played.  It seems like there's increasing momentum behind this, though obviously everything depends on a ton of unknown public health and safety factors
Randy Red Sox
7:39
If there is no baseball in 2020 do the Red Sox still have to re-set their luxury tax in 2021 or does this count as having re-set?
Mark P
7:39
Their luxury tax would NOT reset

Give me the Mt Rushmore of Tampa Rays

Longoria, Crawford, Zobrist, Joe Maddon?

Is Corey Dickerson really hitting third for my beloved Marlins?
Mark P
7:41
That's the likeliest plan, unless they go Dickerson second and Brian Anderson third

I know no one tends to feel bad for them, but this messed up and possibly lost season seems esp rough for the Yanks. Things were aligning for this finally being THE year with this group.
Mark P
7:43
The Yankees have enough talent on hand that their window should stretch for several more years to come.

For teams like the A's, Rays, Indians....2020 might have been their best or last chance at an open contention window
Paul
7:44
Hi Mark, I hope you and your family are safe and healthy during this crazy time. Jus curios do you know if teams can negotiate contracts with free agents or negotiate trades? I know no transactions can be announced during this.
Mark P
7:45
Thanks for the kind wishes!

The transactions freeze covers all sorts of baseball-related business, including negotiations.  I would imagine the league won't be pleased if some team announces some notable move within a few hours of the freeze being lifted, since that would seem to imply that some behind-the-scenes talks were taking place
Luxury Tax Question
7:46
We know the luxury tax won't reset but do you know if there are any negotiations to change the number if rosters expand to, say, 30?  May give a team like the Cubs a chance to get closer or under by just keeping minimum guys....or hurt teams that are just under that have to pay additional major leaguers.    Thoughts,  please.
Mark P
7:48
A reduced schedule means less salary is being paid out, so no team is in danger of going over the CBT threshold even if they have to account for extra players on a 30-man roster.

Buying that 12-pack of Kraft Dinner three months ago turned out to a prescient move

If Albert Pujols stayed in St Louis his whole career, does he eclipse Musial as their best player ever?
Mark P
7:53
Probably not, for two reasons.

  1. Pujols would likely have still had the same injury problems and age-related decline no matter where he played.
  2. Stan Musial is, at minimum, one of the ten best players ever.  As great as Pujols is, even five more "prime Albert" years don't get him to Musial's borderline-GOAT level
