Pujols has one more year left on his contract with the Angels. He says he may want to play beyond that but will anybody actually sign him after 2021 and give him a roster spot?
Mark P
7:55
It seems doubtful, unless Pujols has a major resurgence or a team wants to sell a few extra tickets by marketing Pujols' run at 700 homers or the RBI record.

Could you see a no trade or trade ban in a potential 2020 season? I mean asking players & their families to change cities during a pandemic seems like an unnecessary health risk.
Mark P
7:57
This is a great question, and it's one of many details that hasn't been explored yet in all of this speculation about what a 2020 season might be.  (Not to say that the league itself doesn't have some ideas about it, but nothing has been publicized.)

Aaron > Ruth
Mark P

This isn't at all a crazy take

Do you think IKF has a chance to breakout in 20'?
Mark P
8:00
He was having a big spring, and even becoming a decent MLB regular would count as a nice step forward for Kiner-Falefa, even if not a true "breakout" in the sense of becoming a budding star

If I draft Torkelson number one, is it unrealistic to see Mize, Torkelson, Skibul, and Manning all in Detroit next year?
Mark P
8:01
I'd say it's pretty far-fetched, given the loss of minor league development time this season
Frank K

What was the purpose of eliminating all transactions? At the very least transactions would have provided something to keep fans interested.
Mark P
8:02
With so much uncertainty about everything in the game right now, the league made the (in my view correct) decision to just shut down all baseball-related business to keep the playing field level.

Not the worst time for Thor and Chris Sale to have TJ surgery, right?
Mark P
8:05
In theory no, though there's never really a "good" time to be getting a major arm surgery.  In Syndergaard's case, it really throws a major wrench into his earning potential going into his last year of arbitration, and then into his possible free agent years

What kind of player would Rickey Henderson be if he were drafted today at 18?
Mark P
8:06
It's crazy to think that Rickey Henderson wouldn't be encouraged to steal bases, but even in a modern game that doesn't put a premium on steals, Rickey was such an exception that teams would still heavily value his once-in-a-generation ability.

In short, Rickey is the kind of player who would be great in any era

Which player not in the HOF is the most deserving to be voted in by your estimation?
Mark P
8:08
Barry Bonds.  I understand the anti-Bonds argument, but if I had a ballot, he would get my vote.

Let’s just forget about baseball and play cricket at this point

"Mark, what is your Mount Rushmore of cricket?"
"Don Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, and.....uh....I may need to learn the names more great cricketers."

How many years away are the Pirates from actually contending?  Some young talent but not much in the upper levels
Mark P
8:12
Pre-shutdown, the word from their organization was that they were holding off on any major rebuild plans until they could give the new front office and management team a chance to evaluate the in-house talent.

If they decide they're closer than most feel, or some players have their talents unlocked by new coaches/approaches to the game, maybe the Bucs could be in the mix sooner than we think.  But my guess is that they might not be a factor for a few years.

Field of Dreams or The Natural?
Mark P
8:14
Field Of Dreams.  I'm not a big fan of the Natural, to be frank
Tanker
8:15
Will some teams use this year to tank and should MLB guard against it?
Mark P
8:16
It's quite possible some teams might choose to punt on 2020 in order to reload for 2021.  If there is any sort of a restriction on trades, however, the league isn't going to look too kindly on a team just outright releasing multiple players in order to save on salary.

8:16
Berrios vs Severino?  Who say you?
Mark P
8:17
Berrios is the obvious pick at the moment, since who knows how Severino will rebound after two-plus lost seasons
Hmm..
8:18
Does Realmuto snag over 150 million this upcoming offseason?
Mark P
8:19
$150MM was a big stretch even under normal circumstances.  In an offseason that could see a lot of reduced spending, no chance Realmuto hits that number
Another Luxury Tax ?
8:20
You said the reduced schedule means reduced salary means no teams are in danger of going over the threshold....PLEASE clarify——are you saying if the threshhold is $212M and due to say, half a season, the Cubs salary payout this year is $110M they are UNDER and get to reset???   Want to be sure I read your answer correctly to the previous question that was asked.
Mark P
8:23
No team currently under the luxury tax limit will go over the limit in 2020, since already a lot of salary is being saved by the lack of games. So if there is a season, the Cubs will get a chance to shed some contracts and get under the CBT threshold if they so choose

However, if no games are played at all, the Red Sox/Cubs/Yankees (the three teams over the tax threshold in 2019) will still be over the line for this year, since their penalties will not reset.

Mark P

Because they're the best in show
Jack
8:24
Thanks for these Chats! Do you see giants spending big in the next 2 years of free agency and contending in about 3 years?
Mark P
8:25
Depending on what baseball's financial picture looks like going forward, the Giants are on paper in very good position.  Just about all of their major salary obligations are off the books after 2021, so they can definitely spend on some big free agents if Farhan Zaidi (and ownership) go in that direction
Nolan Arenado
8:27
Do I go thru this season with the Rockies not trading me?
Mark P
8:29
I'd vote for yes, in part because we still don't know when or how trades will happen.  Even if transactions resume as normal, teams may now see Arenado's contract as an even bigger financial cost, since revenues are down.
Dodgers

Saying it isn't crazy to say Aaron is better than Ruth is ridiculous! Come on man!?!?!? The best comparison of any players is to compare them to players of their own era. Ruth hit more home runs than entire teams!!! Aaron was a solid player who put up huge numbers over a lengthy career, but he isn't even in the top 5 players of all time. That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read on here. Get real!
Mark P
8:30
Aaron is a lot closer to Babe Ruth than he is to "not one of the five best players ever."
