Any way the Yankees could go undefeated during a 60 game season?
Mark P
8:31
There was a better chance of me having 56 straight good answers in this chat than there was of the Yankees (or any team) winning 60 straight games

what is your best guess as to how the minor leaguers will be handled?  Sounds like all the MILB leagues will be cancelled, so do you think they will allow each team to have 7-10 players from each team just play in a practice/exhibition league, in order to stay fresh in case they are called up?   For example a player like Brandon McKay, would need somewhere to pitch if he didnt make the MLB roster. I think this part is going to be one of the hardest "plans" to figure out
Mark P
8:34
Absolutely.  This is total speculation on my part, but I could teams trying to get all of their lower-level minor leaguers collected at their Spring Training facility (if possible) to play exhibitions against each other, to keep everyone fresh and on some type of developmental schedule.

The Triple-A types, or the ones that might be reasonably called up for big league duty, could be kept along with the MLB roster to keep everyone in the same general "quarantine bubble" or whatever
8:35
(Man, if you'd told me two months ago that I would be floating "quarantine bubble" scenarios as a normal part of a baseball chat.....)

Hello, thanks for the chat! Does a strict platoon of Joc pederson Jordan luplow compares well vs Springer/Judge level OF production wise? Thanks
Mark P
8:36
Luplow's numbers against LHP were bonkers last year, as our Connor Byrne recently noted: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/04/j-d-martinez-alex-bregman-jorda...

That said, it is still just a one-year sample size, so I wouldn't totally just assume Luplow is some kind of generational lefty-masher going forward

If the Phillies internally decide that Realmuto can't be signed, could they pivot to the Dodgers and trade for Will Smith and a young pitcher or Smith, Stripling, and a PTBNL?  Or another team.
Mark P
8:37
As amusing as the scenario of a guy named Will Smith playing in Philly would be, I strongly doubt the Dodgers are in any rush to trade him

What do you see as the biggest single logistical hurdle to playing the game safely at this point?
Mark P
8:39
What happens if several players (or even one player) tests positive for COVID-19.  Would the league shut down entirely for two weeks?  Would the season be halted just as quickly as it begins?
Rob
8:41
Do you think that Joey Votto can get to 2000+ hits, 300+ home runs and 1000+ rbi's?
Mark P
8:41
He's already pretty close to all three milestones, so even if 2020's season is shortened or non-existent, Votto should pass all three benchmarks before 2021 is out

Do you see the Rockies as closer to the 2018 playoff team or the 2019 team that struggled?
Mark P
8:42
Closer to 2019.  It seems like a whole lot of things went right for Colorado in 2018 (and 2017 for that matter), and they just have so many question marks on the roster that I don't see them contending in 2020

Did you see Didi coming back to NY next year as FA?
Mark P
8:45
Doubtful.  I think the Yankees were ready to move on from Didi.  It would take a combination of a big (and healthy) season from him, and a shaky defensive performance from Gleyber at SS to make a Gregorius/Yankees reunion a possibility

Rays window? A number one farm and one of baseballs most analytical FO. Where are you getting this?
Mark P
8:47
I'm not saying the Rays can't be contenders for the foreseeable future, it's just that 2020 was a particularly great chance for them to win a World Series.  A lost season would mean another round of salary-juggling, plus Charlie Morton could retire

before the stripling / pederson trade fell through, what was the dodgers interest in the angels prospect? can’t find much about him
Mark P
8:50
Luis Rengifo was a solid, if not elite, prospect in Anaheim's system who really broke out with a big 2018 season in the minors.  Switch-hitter, plays multiple positions, so he's the type of versatile piece the Dodgers really like.
He was the only known part of the return going to the Dodgers, not necessarily the headliner, of course.

I am all for the Blue Jays spending big now and forgoing the rebuild, do you agree? and Would George Springer and Jake Odorizzi and Jay Bruce fit the bill?
Mark P
8:52
The Ryu signing would seem to hint that the Jays are ready and willing to start adding some major pieces.  I kind of downplayed the idea of Springer being a Jays target in last week's chat, but with more time to think about it, he make a lot of sense for them.  (Though Springer will get a lot of attention from a lot of teams.)

Assuming there is no season, is a year off necessarily a good thing for pitchers? Might we see a bunch of injuries next season from pitchers not bring able to fully exend themselves this season?
Mark P
8:55
It's certainly possible, since we're in totally uncharted territory here.  Even in years with strikes or lockouts, pitchers could still more or less work out normally, but now everyone's routine has been altered
Rob
8:56
Should the Astros resign Michael Brantley?
Mark P
8:58
If the Astros don't want to meet Springer's asking price, re-signing Brantley would be a good consolation prize.  He does turn 33 in a couple of weeks, but that could also serve to limit his price tag, especially if Houston puts a qualifying offer on him.

Are the Phillies as far away as some suggest? I like their roster
Phil
8:59
With a poor farm system, a large payroll, their best player about to hit free agency, some bad long term contracts, and a brutal division, is there any reason to be optimistic about my Phillies’ future?  Seems like we went through a rebuild and have nothing to show for it.
Mark P
9:01
Classic point-counterpoint here!  I don't disagree that the Phillies may have jumped a gun a tad too soon on ending their rebuild, but for a team that has their financial resources, they can add talent easier than most.  So, I can understand ownership's desire to get back into contention.

No fans at the stadiums this year if there is baseball?

Maybe later in the year, if public health conditions or at least widespread (and accurate) coronavirus testing improves

Ruth, Mays, Robinson, Bonds, Williams, Musial, Mantle......I could name 20 other players better than Aaron. Seriously lame
Mark P

I can certainly understand ranking Ruth ahead of Aaron, but putting Aaron outside an all-time top 20?  You are drastically, drastically, underrating Hammerin' Hank

Does Reddick get a multi yr contract when he hits FA?
Mark P
9:06
Probably not
Rob
9:06
I think Miguel Cabrera can get to 3000 hits as his contract runs for 3 more years and he only needs 185 hits.  Do you agree?
