To be clear, Jeter's actual financial stake in the club is so small that it has already probably been "worth it" for him in terms of dollars and cents.

Going beyond money, I don't see why Jeter would necessarily have any second thoughts today.  He knew going in that it would be a challenge and something of a long-haul rebuild, but the Marlins are making a lot of good steps in that direction.

Will I finally jump off the twins back this year and let them win a playoff series?(hopefully over the Yankees, and more than one series even)
Mark P
7:36
Hey, if everything about baseball in 2020 is topsy-turvy, maybe the Twins will go all bizarro and sweep through the postseason
Derek Falvey
7:36
Did I do enough this offseason to make us legitimate contenders?
Mark P
7:38
Didn't you see my last answer, Derek?  Your Twins will go on a postseason rampage!

In all seriousness, Minnesota definitely still looks like a contender on paper.  Yes, their rotation could still use a bit more help, but the club is hoping that Berrios can be that "true ace" type.

When will the “freeze” on player movement end even if there is no season and do you see a sell off of talent by low revenue, rebuilding teams such as KC with players like Whit, Soler, & Dozier in light of the loss of money up to this point?
Mark P
7:41
The Royals weren't the first team I was thinking of, since their payroll is already only $90MM and Kennedy comes off the books after the season.  In regards to those particular players, Dozier is only just entering arb eligibility and Merrifield is a big bargain, so they aren't big costs.

Soler is set to earn $7.3MM this season and has another year of arb eligibility remaining, so I could maybe see KC moving him, but that's still not a major price tag.

Watched The Big Lebowski last nite for the first time.  Loved it!
Mark P
7:42
One of my all-time favourite movies.  John Goodman should have won an Oscar.

do the padres have a chance this year
Mark P
7:45
In a shortened season, everyone has a chance, so sure.

Going into what we thought was a normal 2020 season, I wasn't totally sold on the Padres yet.  A lot of really interesting young talent that had yet to fully break out, though I wouldn't have been stunned if they had broken out and carried San Diego to at least a winning record

Arenado still a Rockie this time next year?
Mark P
7:47
I'd lean towards no, though there are a lot of complications involved in any Arenado trade
Bryce Harper
7:47
What will MLB do with awards like MVP and ROY?
Mark P
7:47
I don't see why they wouldn't still be awarded in a shortened season.

With the Loss if revenue do you think Betts still gets the largest new money contract?  I say no.  3 months ago I would have said yes
Mark P
7:49
Do you mean largest of all time?  In that case, the answer is absolutely no.

Betts should still get the biggest free agent deal of any player available in next winter's market.

I am anti-expansion.  I think adding more teams just makes it more hopeless that your team will win the World Series.  However, 32 teams kind of makes sense mathematically.  But 32 is the absolute max, right?
Mark P
7:50
Leagues will always consider expansion as long as the money and the demand is there, but 32 does seem like a pretty solid number for scheduling/mathematic purposes.

Im hindsight, do you think the money Philly spent on Cutch was money well spent?
Mark P
7:55
There's still at least one full season left on the deal so we'll have to wait and see.  And to be fair to the Phillies, they couldn't have anticipated a global pandemic wiping out most/all of a full season of McCutchen's deal.

7:55
Do you think sports franchises will have any trouble getting public money in a post-COVID19 world or will it remain the non-issue it's treated as today?
Mark P
7:58
I wouldn't call it a "non-issue," since there has definitely been an increased resistance in recent years to taxpayers largely (or entirely) footing the bill for, say, a new stadium.

Going forward, there will absolutely be a lot of impact.  Jeff Todd recently had a post detailing some of the business-related activity facing multiple teams: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/05/10-mlb-teams-whose-business-ini...

No question. I just want to say I miss baseball....
Mark P
7:59
Same here.  It's so weird to imagine that under normal circumstances, we'd be 6+ weeks into the season and literally every question in this chat would be totally different
(Well, except the one about the Big Lebowski.  That movie is awesome under all circumstances.)
8:02
Sorry for the delay, back to the questions!
Nick
8:03
Do you think owners will try for salary cap as a result of all the lost revenue?
Mark P
8:04
Not a hard cap, since the owners know that's the nuclear issue for the MLBPA.  But more adjustments to the luxury tax threshold, which is already serving as a de facto cap for many teams?  Sure.
MoKo
8:04
There’s an article suggesting the Pirates middle infield is passable, so if they could have added Cole (ouch) and someone equivalent to Mookie in center; would they be co-favorites in NL central?
Mark P
8:05
I'm not sure about co-favorites, but obviously yeah, adding Mookie Betts and Gerrit Cole would be a *slight* roster upgrade
GianCarlo
8:06
Anyway I can become a free agent after a really good MVP 2020 season?
Mark P
8:07
I think Stanton could hit 80 homers this season and he still wouldn't opt out of that contract.  With his age and injury history, he isn't going to walk away from all that guaranteed money

Are there any rumors of the refund of purchased tickets? I know that teams are refunding up to May, but it does not seems that summer games will be played with fans. I have a couples of tickets for June but MLB haven't reach out to me with information.
Mark P
8:08
My suspicion is that we'll get more clarity on refund situations once (or if) a new schedule is finalized

I’m just hoping there is a season. I know there are a lot of hurdles, but I think we all would benefit from baseball as long as it’s safe.
Mark P
8:10
Safety is the only actual hurdle, in my view.
Jeff

NFL already looking to drop the cap as much as $80+ million next year...How hot and heavy are the MLB owners for getting the same deal under their current version of a salary cap?
Mark P
8:13
The NFL, NBA, and NHL all have their salary caps linked to league revenues, so if revenues are down, the cap will naturally be lowered.

Baseball's luxury tax, however, isn't tied to revenues or percentages of revenue.  So the MLBPA will naturally fight hard against any attempt to lower the tax threshold or turn it into more of a proper cap

I'm a NL fan so I didn't see too much of Grady Sizemore in his hey-day. My neighbor swears he was the best player in baseball. True?
