Walker Buehler

How many Cy Youngs do I win this decade and what are the odds I can have a better career than Kershaw
Mark P
7:32
I think very highly of Buehler's ability, but realistically, he won't be better than Kershaw's HOF-level career.  Getting even in the ballpark of Kershaw would be a huge achievement for both Buehler

Thanks for the Rays / Marquez article MLBT!  The dude can pitch and is under appreciated because of Coors

No problem!  For those who haven't seen Anthony Franco's piece from earlier today: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/05/one-trade-the-rays-would-like-t...

I contend that Kenny Lofton ought to be in the HOF. What say you?
Mark P
7:36
I haven't sat down and had a hard look at Lofton's numbers, so I don't want to say off the top of my head that he SHOULD be in Cooperstown.

But he absolutely should have been on the ballot for more than just one season.

If the MLB draft is 5 rounds, wouldn't the name brand teams (Yankees, Dodgers, etc.) Have a better chance of quality picks, say versus Pirates, Roysls?
Mark P
7:38
Maybe, though if you're a young player looking for a quick path to the big leagues, maybe you'd prefer your chances in a non-stacked farm systems
This year's draft is going to be so unusual that it's hard to predict how things will shake out.

If there are 30-man rosters, Puig should find work easily, no?
Mark P
7:39
I would imagine so.  Someone would have signed him before Opening Day under normal circumstances, and I suspect he'd land a deal at some point after the transactions freeze is lifted.

Olympic Stadium was an awesome experience, they sold game-used memorabilia before it was everywhere!
Mark P

I saw around seven or eight games at the Big O, and had a great time.  The fans that were there were the hardest of hardcore Expos supporters, so it was still a fun atmosphere.

About the taxi squad. If a player is replaced on the 30 man active does he need to go through waivers? What if he is out of options? Are the new 50 man total mean that teams can add additional players who aren't on their current 40 man roster?
Mark P
7:43
These questions have yet to be addressed, and I'd imagine the players will have significant input on the league's initial concepts.

Baltimore takes Nick Gonzales at #2 because they are very weak at middle infield throughout their system.
Mark P
7:45
In general, teams don't pick for their specific needs at the moment --- they just take the best player available.  It isn't like the NFL or NBA drafts where the top prospects can help immediately, since even the best baseball prospects usually need at least a few years to develop.  The O's might have a middle infield need now, but perhaps not in a couple of years' time when Gonzales reaches the majors.

This all being said, they might well take Gonzales anyway if they think he's the best player available

Fair or not, if the season doesn’t happen then the fans will have strong negative feelings specifically towards players. Am I wrong
Mark P
7:48
You're not wrong.  Fans are much more familiar with the players than they are with the owners, so players take the brunt of criticism.  It's usually something along the lines of the dismissive "they're playing a kids' game, they should be willing to do it for much less!" argument, followed by an obligatory tangent about the cost of hot dogs at a ballpark.

Will we see robo umps this season?
Mark P
7:49
Nope.  Right now the focus is just on getting games going period, so any major shakeups in on-field practices will likely be held off

If the universal DH is indeed here to stay, who are the biggest beneficiaries?
Mark P
7:50
Any defensively-challenged player who has some pop in his bat.

Should we have our popcorn and candy ready for the theatrics and drama?

We already knew it was going to be a tumultuous negotiation, but the added layer of financial uncertainty brought on by the pandemic complicates things even further.

The draft bonuses have been shrunk.  What about the international signees?  Many had handshake agreements before covid.
Mark P
7:53
Last I heard about the international signing period, a decision hadn't been made about whether to still open the window on July 2 or push it back (perhaps as deep as January).

If a season ensues, will minor leaguers be at spring facilities in the event of call ups?
Mark P
7:55
That would be the best guess for now, since it seems like any sort of a normal minor league season could be scuttled entirely

Is Jon Olerud severely underrated?
Mark P
7:57
He's so underrated that even the person asking if he's underrated calls him "Jon" instead of John!

But seriously, Olerud was an excellent hitter.  He was one of my favourites growing up as a Jays fan.

Could you see the Pirates (or a similarly situated team) trying to sell off pieces with a quickness?  Kela would be a rental and guys like Bell and Frazier aren’t gonna be part of the next Pirates contender.  Now that their already-right pursestrings are tightened further and everybody moves closer to free agency, why hesitate?
Mark P
7:58
Some teams will definitely pursue this strategy, and I'd guess Pittsburgh would probably be near the top of the list

No doubt Puig would get snatched up quickly for an abbreviated season with expanded rosters, but wasn't the real reason he wasn't signed was because he is considered to be a cancer in the clubhouse?
Mark P
8:01
Puig has his share of baggage, though I'd guess his salary demands were a bigger roadblock than his clubhouse behavior.  After all, we've seen lot of guys go from being a disruption on one team to being model citizens in another environment (and vice versa)

How many games do you think will be played?  Any chance at 144 or more ?
Mark P
8:03
That doesn't seem feasible, since you'd need to play awfully deep into the calendar to get that many games into the schedule.  If you're trying to cram too many games into a week, you're going to run into even more injury problems than already seem inevitable given the stop-and-start nature of everyone's prep
