All around me are familiar faces
8:03
Simmons extension with the Angels more or less likely with the abbreviated season?
Mark P
8:04
Assuming the Halos are willing to issue it, I could see Simmons as a player who would take a qualifying offer.
Wander Franco
8:04
Am I the next Jose Cruz Jr or Derek Jeter?
Mark P
8:05
Similar to the earlier question about Buehler and Kershaw....we don't need to be comparing these guys to Hall-of-Famers right from the jump.

If Franco ends up having Jose Cruz Jr's career, hey, that's still a heck of a career.

Someone hits .400 will it be counted?
Mark P
8:09
Well, it'll "count," sure.  Nobody would hold a .400 average over 82 games as equivalent to Ted Williams or anything, but it would count as a legitimate average posted over whatever stood as the 2020 regular season.
8:10
Also, hitting .400 even over 82 games would still be awfully impressive.
Luis Robert

Eloy said I'm the next Mike Trout.  Do you believe him?
Mark P
8:10
Eloy, didn't you see my answers about the Wander Franco and Walker Buehler questions?!
Sports
8:11
Is baseball your favorite sport?
Mark P
8:11
Absolutely
Angels
8:12
Angel's now have Ohtani a full year and maybe Canning back for season, are they still on the outside looking in?
Mark P
8:13
Obligatory "they have a chance in a short season" comment, but it was possible to see a path to a postseason berth even under normal circumstances for the Angels.
8:14
I'm still not totally sold on their pitching, but having Ohtani around for the whole season is a boost
Rob K
8:15
Will Minnie Minoso and/or Ted Kluszewski eventually be enshrined in the Baseball’s Hall of Fame
Mark P
8:15
Klu was a good player who had a long career, but he's not someone who'd I'd vote into the Hall.

Minoso is hugely overdue and should've been years ago.  Let's hope a veterans committee inducts him the next time he's eligible.
CC Sabathia
8:17
should I un-retire for a shortened season if the Yankees called?
Mark P
8:18
I have no idea what kind of shape CC has kept himself in since retirement, but he gave every indication that he was done.  So, assuming he shut down all pitching-related activities, it would seem almost impossible for him to ramp back up in time for one more encore season.  He'd be starting from zero.

Great piece about locking up prospects very early, it would be great to speculate on those candidates for most teams, barring the “no-brainers” and only in triple A. So would signing Brusdal Graterol for 6 years 10M be good business for LA?
Mark P
8:20
It takes two to tango on those contracts, however.  Many young players would prefer to just let their careers play out in the hopes of scoring bigger money down the road, rather than lock themselves into a limited contract.

The worst idea is the expansion of playoffs spots. It was hardly fair as it was but this? Do players like this? Not for the benefit of the sport, just the wallets.
Mark P
8:22
An expanded postseason means more playoff games on TV, which means more TV revenue.

Also, an expanded playoff system gives more players a shot at a ring, which naturally is of interest

With no minor league season how do teams get their replacements in case of injuries for MLB game ready?
Mark P
8:24
The plan that has been floated is to have a 20-player taxi squad training alongside the big league team, so replacements can step in should any of the big leaguers get hurt
Pitchers
8:25
On average, how much do you expect NL starting pitcher ERAs to rise due to the universal DH? Do you think NL pitchers who are up for arbitration and contracts following the 2020 season have a gripe about their increased ERAs (and subsequent contracts) if the DH is a one-and-done for 2020?
Mark P
8:27
Given all the other unusual factor that pitchers are going to be dealing with this year in terms of conditioning, heavy reliever usage, openers, piggybacked starters, etc., I think a universal DH is the least of their concerns
MLBPA

Do I have good reason to not trust the owners' books?
Mark P
8:28
Given that teams' full financial records are almost never made public, sure

8:32
Did I lose the Gonzalez/O’Neill swap already? Any chance Tyler hits enough to make it a win?
Mark P
8:33
O'Neill's career has yet to really launch, so it's too early to judge.  He's a guy who might be really helped by a DH spot in the National League, if for no other reason than a further avenue to get some much-needed playing time
Scherzer vs Kershawn
8:34
Better career to date?
Mark P
8:36
Tough question.  I'll take Scherzer in a close call
The WS ring puts him over the top in an overall "career" perspective, though Kershaw has slightly better numbers
Lou Brown
8:37
Does Tulo get paid this year?
Mark P
8:38
Yes.  Tulo and other players who were owed money but not on active rosters weren't subject to the reduced salary agreement in March
8:39
Time to call it a night.  Thanks for all the questions, and everyone stay safe out there.
