Best defensive OF in the game today?
Mark P
7:33
Hmm....lots of good candidates.  I'd say Buxton or Kiermaier if either are healthy.

Thanks for the chat. Really miss baseball and these help some.
Mark P
7:34
My pleasure! It's a welcome respite for a lot of us, myself included

How about a simple poll on if we have MLB games this year
Mark P
7:34
Will we have Major League Baseball games in 2020?

Yes (52% | 268 votes)

No (48% | 247 votes)

Prorated
7:35
What is a player's prorated salary if no games are played?
Mark P
7:36
If the 2020 season is canceled, then players won't make anything (prorated or otherwise) besides the $170MM lump sum given to them back in March.

That $170MM represents around three or four percent of all salaries owed in 2020, so needless to say, players would be taking quite a haircut

Fans in stands will happen this year, I'd say. Do you think all stadiums will be at 50% capacity or higher come playoffs?
Mark P
7:41
The possibility of fans in attendance adds another wrinkle to the season-opening talks.  The owners have been taking the stance that these will be empty-stadium games, so players will surely want some built-in financial compensation if there are some fans allowed to attend
Cubs

Stuff Wrigley with Teddy bears.  Put one in the dugout as the bat bear.
Mark P
7:42
Go all the way with it.  Put a stuffed Harry Caray bear (Harry Bear-ay?) in the broadcast booth.
Orioles
7:43
Is there much of a chance that the orioles take a prospect that's picked to go lower to spend money down the draft.  I've heard that, but with only 5 rounds, would it be prudent?
Mark P
7:43
There have been a few rumblings to that effect, but most mock drafts have the O's taking Austin Martin
7:44
This year in particular, however, I could see an argument for being as creative as possible with draft pool spending.

Does Cueto have trade value?  Have admired him throughout his career, would love for him to pitch for a contender
Mark P
7:47
If he's back to being healthy and is even close to his old effectiveness, I can certainly see a trade market for Cueto.  He is owed $22MM in 2021, plus whatever (if anything) ends up being out of his $22MM salary for 2020.  It's not a small amount of money, but not enough to prevent a team from absorbing most/all of it
Hey MLBPA
7:49
The owners aren't gonna break.  Give them the money they want.  In exchange, get more service time to get your players to FA faster and get that money back.  2 years service time if you play any games, 1 year if your on the 50 man roster and don't play, and an opt out clause for anyone on a free agent contract.
Mark P
7:50
The players wouldn't go for that whatsoever.  That would essentially double the 2020-21 free agent class, giving teams more leverage in keeping salaries low due to the flooded market for players.
Worried Fan

With baseball already falling in popularity amongst Americans (behind the NFL and NBA in viewership), how much do you think a complete loss of a season accelerates this fall? Does it become less popular than the NHL or MLS?
Mark P
7:51
Baseball is so ingrained in U.S. culture that I can still see it being third place among the big team sports, but an entire season away could certainly threaten to make it a distant third.

Will any teams with young talent make it into the playoffs with only 50 games ?
Mark P
7:54
I've posted about this before, but the shorter the season, the greater the chances of literally any team reaching the postseason.  50 games is a very small sample size.  If all the youngsters on, say, the Marlins or the Royals got hot for a couple of weeks and the team won a bunch of games, that might be enough of a difference to reach the playoffs.

Legitimate chances we end up owning the Mets?
Mark P
7:55
They seem to be the top (known) suitors thus far, so I'd say they have as good a shot as anyone.
Pro Rates Salaries
7:56
If the players get their way and get 100% of their pro-rated salaries for number of games played, how could they ask for more money if fans are eventually let in to see some games?  They are already getting paid in full; it’s the owners who are taking the full hit with no fans or limited fans.
Mark P
7:57
Off the top of my head, how about this --- the 81/81 plan.  81 games in a regular season, with players receiving 81 percent of their prorated salary.  If fans are allowed to attend games even in some markets, all of that fan-generated revenue is put into a league-wide pot and split 50-50 with the players.
7:59
I don't love the idea of players having to give up any more salary, but this might be an okay compromise.  A third-party arbiter would have to oversee and calculate the fan-generated revenues to make sure everything is on the up and up
Havana Pete
7:59
Given a 50-game season, should the Orioles call up Adley Rutschmann?
Mark P
8:00
Seems too soon.  The O's don't want to do anything that would hamper his development.  Granted, not playing at all in 2020 would also be a detriment, but I'd guess Adley would be made a member of the rumored 20-player taxi squad in order to give him some training reps, except he would never be called into an actual MLB game
Jim

I've got a better idea. All proceeds from fans go to Covid research
Mark P
8:01
Another fine idea!

What happens to the $170m if there is no season?  Clawed back from 2021 salaries?
Mark P
8:02
If there's no 2020 season, the players keep that $170MM.

If there is a 2020 season, that $170MM becomes a down payment on whatever salaries are paid this year.
Pumpsie

Will Jansen and McGuire be a true platoon for the next 4 years, or do they trade one?
Mark P
8:04
I'd be surprised if both are still Blue Jays in four years' time, so at least one will have been moved by then.
The Dark Knight

What do you think about Matt Harvey seeking work in the KBO?
Mark P
8:05
Since interest in Harvey seemed muted even before the MLB shutdown, he might as well explore his options abroad
Andy
8:06
In a shortened season do you think we see Kyle Lewis and Evan White cement roles for next year with Ms?
Mark P
8:07
Lewis will get every opportunity to play every day.  White's extension notwithstanding, he had barely cracked Triple-A last year, so I wonder if the M's might ease him into facing MLB pitching rather than just hand him a regular lineup spot
