Do the Reds try to re-sign Trevor Bauer, and bonus question do you feel Dave Concepcion should be in the Hall of Fame?
Mark P
8:09
Bauer's plan of going year-to-year with free agent contracts could be adjusted in the wake of the pandemic, though even if that's the case, it might be 50-50 if the Reds make an offer.  Splitting the difference, I could potentially see Bauer accepting a qualifying offer from the team if he feels a shortened or canceled season wouldn't be an appropriate platform year for him.
8:10
As for Concepcion, very good player but not a HOFer in my view

Do you expect teams making a bunch of trades when the season restarts? Teams in contention trying to bolster their chances while rebuilding teams look for more younger talent?
Mark P
8:15
With the big caveat that we don't know how trades will operate once the freeze is lifted, a flurry could indeed possibly happen.  You might be some surprising teams (i.e. would-be contenders) go into reload mode based on finances alone, which could open the door for teams who aren't facing such difficulties to make a move for talent

Do you feel the Dbacks will regret trading for Marte if he is only available for next year plus whatever happens in 2020?
Mark P
8:17
Probably not to any great extent, since Arizona didn't give up all that much in the trade.

Which would you pick - Mitchell vs. Veen?  Meyer vs. Hancock?
Mark P
8:19
Going by nothing but second-hand scouting reports and other people's projections, Veen and Meyer

Aside from Mike Trout who would you take if you could poach one player from any MLB team to put on an expansion team with no players on any team being protected?
Mark P
8:22
If contracts are a factor, Ronald Acuna

If contracts aren't a factor....hmm, still maybe Acuna

What is the most memorable trade you remember from your youth?  I remember asking my mom why the Cubs traded Rick Monday for Bill Buckner
Mark P
8:23
Growing up as a Blue Jays fan, the answer is easily the Roberto Alomar/Joe Carter for Fred McGriff/Tony Fernandez trade.

As a kid, I was aware of the concept of player trades at that point, but didn't really realize that they could encompass things like "wait, two of my favorite players AREN'T BLUE JAYS ANY MORE?!?!  WHAT?!?!"
8:24
As much as I liked Tony and the Crime Dog, however, it didn't take me long to warm up to Alomar and Carter

Why is it so difficult to draft and home grow pitching?
Mark P
8:26
Pitching is incredibly hard, and even harder to do well at the big league level, and even harder than that to do well at the MLB level over a sustained period of time.

Best trade I recall back in  the day was Kuenn for Colavito.  Loved the Rock!!!!!  You like it??
Mark P
8:27
That trade was a little before my time, but funny you should mention it...

Do you think contracted minor league teams might be a blessing in disguise? More NCAA baseball players & a following, less time to get to the pros by eliminating a rung or two of development, etc.
Mark P
8:30
I don't deny that there's a solid argument for reducing the overall number of minor league teams.  But the sheer number of teams reportedly being cut seemed excessive, and the number of smaller markets (that would now be without any pro baseball at all) being abandoned didn't seem like a wise way to keep the game strong

Which stadium do you find to be the most beautiful stadium in the major leagues?

PNC Park, in Pittsburgh

With all of the minor league players getting released due to pay concerns, are they all free to sign with any team or will they be picked back up by their original team when play resumes?
Mark P
8:32
I wouldn't be shocked if there are a few handshake deals in place for players to rejoin their old teams once the freeze is lifted.  But for the moment, minor league free agents are open to sign with anyone, since the freeze only applies to Major League transactions.
Not that teams are exactly in a rush to sign anyone right now.

Does Elsbury get a prorated portion of a salary or does he get his full salary since he was released before the owners and players came to an agreement about how much it will be making?
Mark P
8:34
He would be in line for his full salary.  Now, the Yankees felt they had a case for withholding Ellsbury's 2020 salary (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/yankees-jacoby-ellsbury-salary-...) but the results of that grievance have yet to be determined.

I think Austin Martin may fall to the Jays at 5, with Lacy, Veen, Hanock, and a surprise Orioles pick ahead of him. Do they take him at 5, or does he fall further? He doesn't seem to have a position. Is his bat that elite?
Mark P
8:36
Wait, you don't have Torkelson going in the top five in this scenario?

With all the minor league consolidation and player releases, indie leagues could see some growth.  Have you ever been to an indie league game?

Freeman will be in the wrong side of 30, what kind of extension should he expect?
Mark P
8:41
Freeman's current deal is up after the 2021 season, when he'll be 32.  As well as Freeman is still playing and as much as he has become a franchise cornerstone....if you're the Braves front office, maybe you roll the dice and hold off on an extension altogether?
8:42
Tying up a lot of money to a first base-only player into his mid-30's has been a risky proposition in the past, so it'll be a difficult call for Atlanta
MLB
8:43
if a team that is struggling with fans say the Marlins or the Tampa Bay rays were to be sold how much do you think they would be sold for?
Mark P
8:43
Don't forget, the Marlins sold for $1.2 billion less than three years ago.
8:44
One billion dollars seems to be the minimum going rate for any MLB team
