(Fun fact: it is impossible to type "one billion dollars" without saying it aloud in the Dr. Evil voice)

What are the three most significant mistakes the angels have made in failing to build a contender around mike trout?

  1. Spending a lot of money on ill-advised free agent signings (Pujols, Hamilton, Wilson, etc.)
  2. An almost unheard-of run of pitching injuries. You can't blame the team entirely for these injuries, of course, but the sheer volume of arm problems seems to hint at some kind of underlying training or pitcher-development issues
  3. Some bad trades, perhaps prompted by an increasing pressure to try and get a contender built while you have the game's best player in his prime

I get that in the sense of “it sold for $1.2B” that the Marlins team was “worth” that amount...but there’s no way the Marlins are worth that after decades of Loria scandals and mismanagement, right?

They absolutely are.  If anything, the team was undervalued thanks to Loria's baggage --- the Marlins play in a new stadium in a major market.  No reason that a well-run Marlins franchise couldn't be a major player.

And on that note, let's wrap things up.  Thanks again for all the questions, and hopefully by next Sunday, we might have some more clarity on whether or not we'll get a baseball season!

(I feel like I've ended the last few chats with that exact same message, but here's to staying positive.)
