Is it more likely Mookie takes a hired gun, short term ontract (say 2-3years)  to go to a team to win a World Series given uncertain future of $ revenue streams and CBA Armageddon coming in Dec 2021?. My estimate 75%. Get large upfront bonus and get higher avg salary. Risk of injury I know but consider the alternative. I dont see a team wanting to go 7 years or more. Too Risky. IMHO

I tend to think that Betts is the type of elite player who will still get those longer-term offers, regardless of how the free agent market plays out for everyone else.  He is also a guy who has clearly put a lot of thought and planning into his free agency, and while the pandemic surely upended a lot of those plans, Betts isn't going to short-change himself.
Zak

who do you think will get the bulk of DH starts for the Dodgers? They seem to be pretty deep but without anybody who is defensively deficient
Mark P
7:55
Maybe Muncy gets the slight majority of DH time, but the Dodgers are almost surely going to rotate a lot of guys through the DH spot

Seems like with such a short season, you can really overuse your bullpen. Teams with good bullpens = advantage?
Mark P
7:56
Absolutely.  Flexibility is also a big advantage, which is why I think teams like the Brewers or Rays could have a leg up since they're already used to deploying their pitchers in creative ways

What will be the big issues in the next labor agreement
Mark P
7:57
Given the lack of common ground between players and owners, it isn't a stretch to say everything will be a big issue

Thoughts on rules like limiting # of pickoff throws per AB, batter not stepping out of box, and pitch clock? IMO it's not the length of games that's an issue, it's the amount of time it takes to get to bat on ball action that disinterests the casual fan.
Mark P
8:00
I tend to agree.  If umpires enforced the actual rules on the books about players stepping in and out of the box (or pitchers stepping off the mound), that would cut more time out of your average game than, say, removing the four actual pitches from an intentional walk.

How much does losing Buster Posey hurt the Giants? He's a great catcher when he's healthy, but he is only getting older... Plus Bart might do just fine in the mean time right?
Mark P
8:02
Not sure if the Giants want to toss Bart into the deep end of big league ball just yet, especially under this season's odd circumstances.

I don’t think you really like baseball. I believe you like the stats, contracts and the hot stove, but not the game itself. Am I wrong?
Mark P
8:03
You couldn't be more wrong

Any chance of A's extending Marcus Semien? If not, how much money do you think he'll get in FA?
Mark P
8:06
As much as the A's have said they're changing the way they do business, I'll have to see them sign a player to a big-money long-term extension before I believe it.

Semien is a tough case to predict, both because this winter's FA market will be so unusual and because 2019 was his only superstar year.  If he doesn't play well in 2020, I can see teams not wanting to pay truly big bucks for fear that 2019 was an aberration.

Kyle Lewis!! Crushing inter squad baseballs!!
Mark P
8:07
I may have a new pick tomorrow, but Kyle Lewis is looking like a very interesting rookie of the year candidate right now.
Brandon Drury
8:07
Am I the guy until Martin is ready?
Mark P
8:08
Drury has shown so little over the last couple of seasons that there are a lot of Jays players I'd prefer to see given playing time ahead of him.

Is it wrong to love the stats of the game? I'm probably nerdy, but I love looking at stats: who could make hall of fame, who could break a record, just general stat watching?
Mark P
8:09
This is why baseball is my favorite sport --- I find pretty much everything about it fascinating, from watching the actual games to talking hot stove moves to geeking out at Baseball Reference for a couple of hours.

This seems like a prime time for gms and owners to try and lock up some young prospect who are highly regarded or some good looking players without much service time  Do you think we will see a run of organizations looking at some high level young talent and hoping to extend them/ buy out arbitration years ? Pete Alonso, adell?
Mark P
8:12
We've seen an increase in "pre-career" extensions over the last couple of years, and I expect that to continue.  Players might be more open to such contracts since they now have even more uncertainty to worry about......but by that same logic, teams might also have enough financial issues that they'll be less willing to invest in an unproven player

Can "Non Essential" former MLB affiliated minor league teams survive as independent or private companies (talent farms)?
Mark P
8:13
I'm sure some will become independent teams, though it all depends on ownership willingness

The Cleveland Wild Things?

If you're looking for a less problematic name, I'm not sure indirectly naming your team after Charlie Sheen is the way to go

What are the minor league players doing without minor league ball?  They have to be struggling.  Any word on help for them?
Mark P
8:18
The majority of teams have agreed to pay their minor leaguers their $400 weekly stipend throughout what would have been the end of the minor league season (start of September).

So that's at least something, but you're right, it's a tough time for a lot of minors players.  Especially considering their low wages in the best of times.
Michael Kopech
8:19
How much does my opting out hurt the White Sox' chances at a WC spot?
Mark P
8:20
Kopech was coming back from Tommy John surgery, so I don't think he was going to be a full-fledged pitching weapon for the Sox regardless.  Still, he might have been very interesting coming out of the pen, perhaps similar to how Chris Sale was eased into his big league career.

What would be “progress” or success for Zaidi And the San Francisco Giants this year in your opinion?
Mark P
8:22
Sneaking into a wild card spot would be an overwhelming success, though overall, continued good progress from the younger players and good results from the veterans.  Plus, needless to say, everyone staying healthy.
Mike Hazen
8:23
Archie Bradley told how Mike Hazen has said that they are winning the WS l, and dont have any qualms about it being during a 60 game season... Dbacks world series champs Yea or Nay?
Mark P
8:24
I had the D'Backs as my wild card prediction back pre-pandemic and they surely have as good a chance as anyone now
Yuli Gurriel

Do I sign a deal with the Blue Jays this offseason? I could give the Jays a big DH/1B bat (whichever one Vladdy Jr. isn’t playing), plus I said when I defected from Cuba that I wanted to play on the same team as Lourdes.
Mark P
8:26
I can see the Jays giving him a look.  Yuli has the kind of multi-positional ability Toronto likes, and I don't think he'd cost too much.  (Might even be open to a minor discount in order to play with his brother.)
