That'd be my expectation.
Russell Martin
4:52
With all these catchers out- why haven’t I been an option?
Jeffrey Todd
4:52
May be soon -- those latest ones just popped up suddenly. But do we know if he's really looking for a job?
Alan V
4:53
Do the Dodgers go out and get more pitching or just go with what they have?
Jeffrey Todd
4:54
It's like any other season in that they're going to see how it progresses. It'll just be a shorter timetable to make assessments.
Grayson Wells
4:54
What is "cash considerations"? Is it a dependent on the player performing well or a guarantee to pay his salary with he remains on the roster?
Jeffrey Todd
4:54
Just another way to say they cut a check.
Salary Cap
4:55
I know the players are very vocal about no salary cap but with a cap they could get a salary min. That would prevent teams from spending less Trout makes for 1 season. Am I missing something
Jeffrey Todd
4:56
It's debatable whether a floor/cap could be better for your average big leaguer -- maybe the minimum salary would go up as part of it, etc -- but there's zero chance it'd allow the same kinds of earnings for the higher-end guys.
Just look at other sports and how much less guaranteed $ top players get.
4:57
And a superstar QB or basketball player is far more valuable to a team than any individual baseball player.
Hector
4:57
How bad is the contract the Padres gave to Hosmer?
Jeffrey Todd
4:57
Quite bad! Seemed pretty bad at the time and hasn't aged well.

What is the advantage, from the player's point of view, in signing for less than slot value? I understand the team's advantage, but what is in it for the player to take less than what he knows he is owed?
Jeffrey Todd
4:59
It's not less than what the guys is owed. You can't just say "eh no thanks I'll take the slot value." It's all negotiable. And calls are made before the selections are input to make sure the math will work. So these guys know what they can hold out for b/c they're in touch with multiple teams.

Baseball is back. Think the Reds can win the central this year?
Jeffrey Todd
5:00
Absolutely can.

Do the padres finally make the playoffs, I mean how could they not this year?
Jeffrey Todd
5:00
Well, the NL is very deep. Only a few non-competitive teams. So it's quite possible they could just fall short.
5:01
Cespedes just went deep! He's back!
Don Johnson

Is Jeff Blauser a borderline HOF?
Jeffrey Todd
5:02
No but he's in the hall of my heart

I am having difficulty taking this season seriously. Am I the only one?
Jeffrey Todd
5:03
Jacob de Grom is still out there pumping 100 and being utterly filthy.

Do I get traded this season?
Jeffrey Todd
5:03
Doubt it.

I would say there'd be more activity at the trade deadline. With over half the league potentially playing in another 25 critical games, they could make great use of a rental. I think it might be a boon for the obvious sellers - like the Orioles, Tigers, Marlins; etc.
Jeffrey Todd
5:05
Yes, it's a boon for the obvious sellers, except they have so little to sell. And look at all these questions I'm getting about middle of the road teams ... who is selling if they're within shouting distance of the postseason? It'd be hard to justify after 36 games (or whatever it is, I can't recall offhand).
Also there's the matter of 60-man pool management. Though I don't think that'll be an enormous problem, it does make it harder to just throw around handfuls of prospects.

Most people I’ve spoken too hate the expanded postseason with a passion. I’m wary of a confirmation bias bubble though, so can we get a love it/hate it/don’t care anymore poll please? I needs to know!!

Expanded playoffs in 60-game season

LOVE (32.3% | 64 votes)

HATE (35.9% | 71 votes)

shrug (31.8% | 63 votes)

I have a feeling the Giants aren't going to do any favors for the perception of advanced metrics. They are re-billing themselves as 'smart baseball' while simultaneously undermining late-inning defense in leu of a no-upside pinch hit opportunity (Re: the 7th inning of last night's game). Not to mention, they don't have a CFer! What is happening?
Jeffrey Todd
5:09
Have to consider it a multi-year effort. Definitely interesting to watch.
5:10
They are still shedding contracts and such, remember. And they had the weird situation of being nominally in contention last year.

Owners and Players union seemed blind to how much they alienated fans with their bickering in negotiations, and they’ve done it again with an expanded post season that the vast majority of fans don’t want. Do they even care what fans think any more? Did they ever?
Jeffrey Todd
5:11
I'm not sure about that. I think people will be jazzed to see their team with a chance and playing a postseason series.
Especially more casual fans, which is obviously what they're trying to lure.

Make an arbitrary decision and say guys like Lux, or Bryant; etc - unless the team can present to the MLB officials a legitimate other reason - that like Bowie Kuhn used to nix Charlie O'malley's trades - the temporary demotion to add a year should be nixed in the same way by the commissioner's office.
Jeffrey Todd
5:13
Exactly ... so it's utterly subjective and would be unendingly controversial. You could have an arbitration panel decide it and empower it with stronger standards, but by its nature it would have to be an after-the-fact determination.
