It'd be very very messy.
I don't like the situation any more than anybody else does, btw.
Mike
5:14
You forgot the Albatross contract of Sir Albert in Anaheim. Thats killing them.
Jeffrey Todd
5:15
What's there to talk about? They are stuck with it on the payroll but still have enough dough to do things. And they ended up landing one of the greatest players of all-time, who is underpaid even on his huge contract, and got one of the most amazing talents in the world (Shohei) for pennies.
5:16
Pujols on the payroll doesn't mean they can't win in 2020.

Getting Schebler might be an indication the Braves have moved on from the Puig idea.  Orioles might still be an option.
Jeffrey Todd
5:16
Left-handed hitter who cost nothing. He doesn't preclude Puig.

Given Preller was on the hot seat before the season, if the Padres make the playoffs this year with the farcical expanded playoffs, should that cool his seat or should he still be under fire?
Jeffrey Todd
5:16
I think he'd be safe.
Timmy
5:18
Would you rather have dinner with Pete Rose or TY Cobb?
Jeffrey Todd
5:19
I mean, we've all seen Rose on TV. Quite enough for me. It would be legitimately interesting to sit down with Cobb and see what he's really like.
Player to be named later
5:21
Will we see me traded even more than usual, to get around the 60 man player pool?
Jeffrey Todd
5:21
I am not certain but I'd assume that isn't permissible, unless the PTBNL list is all people that are on the 60-man.
Céspedes
5:22
What would be my future?
Jeffrey Todd
5:22
Upside scenario is he settles in as Nelson Cruz 2.0

Is the simple(r) solution to manipulation of service time not to say that any player who appears on a roster for more than say a week in a calendar year gets a year of service time? Would stop teams holding players down as they wouldn’t hold down a ready player for a whole year?
Jeffrey Todd
5:23
All those types of scenarios would just shift the timing of the service time games.
5:24
And that rule would prevent teams from bringing guys up later in the season. No more Trea Turner getting his first taste. No more Corey Seager and David Price becoming key players after late-year debuts.

5:25
Perhaps a more creative (but potentially still messy) solution to service time would be to increase service time to maybe 8 years total, it players can accrue it in the minors. So a player at A ball gets 0.25 years of service time per season, AA gets 0.5, AAA 0.75 etc.? Then once a player finishes a season with more than 7.25 years they become a free agent? That way there is less incentive to hold players down in the minors.
Jeffrey Todd
5:26
That sounds more interesting, though would also present loads of manipulation possibilities.

Met up with 2 buddies today (social distancing of course) to discuss opening day for our Cardinals. Not one of us cared to look at the final roster. We were more pumped in February. Sad...
Jeffrey Todd
5:26
Is what it is, though, y'know? Everything is weird, alas.

What do you think the lack of a minor league year will do to up and coming players? And for those on the 60 man that were ticketed for A ball, do you think they just start in AA next minor league season?
Jeffrey Todd
5:28
I think it will have massive impacts on who makes it and who doesn't. Not that we'll be able to figure out in retrospect exactly why it turned out that way. But some guys will probably have the independent motivation and others will struggle without structure and in-person instruction and the social element of the game.
Union vs Owners
5:28
Does the Union have the guts to strike if the next CBA negotiation goes poorly? I feel like the players have way more to lose than the owners and that a strike is unlikely. I'm rooting for the players but the owners have way too much leverage
Jeffrey Todd
5:29
I think everyone has enough to lose that it's hard to stomach a work stoppage, though certainly the owners can better weather it. The best thing the union can do is work to get its members to tighten up financially and get on the same page in advance of the talks.

Nelson Cruz 2.0? Isn't Nelson Cruz, Edwin Encarnacion 2.0?
Jeffrey Todd
5:30
Sure. There are other examples as well.
5:31
Though EE is actually a fair bit younger than Nellie.
Joshua

The Nats desperately need another bat, especially now with Soto out. Can you think of a bat that is available trade wise that they could make a run at?
Jeffrey Todd
5:32
Nah, too soon. You're not replacing Soto anyway.
Jim
5:32
I don't have so much of a problem with expanding the pool as I do with there no longer being an advantage to winning the division.
Jeffrey Todd
5:33
There'll still be a pretty significant advantage, I believe. I do really prefer the regular season to confer a big advantage. And I don't think what they come up with for 2020 will necessarily stick in terms of details.
Cathers out

Am I the only one who noticed that all 3 of the main catchers for the Atl/MIA games in Atl this week were put on the IL today.  I’d love to see who the Ump was and if he is active.
Jeffrey Todd
5:35
Yeah I've seen that mentioned and I'm sure it has been considered and pursued.

How soon do the Blue Jays add Martin to that incredible infield?
Jeffrey Todd
5:35
Not this year. Who knows, though, he's going to lose some lower-level experience and gain exposure to higher-level players in camp. Maybe he's a mid-2021 candidate.
Mr October
5:35
It's the 3-game first round for all teams in the playoffs that bothers me.
Jeffrey Todd
5:36
Yeah I don't like that.
5:37
Okay y'all, I'm going to have to take off!
