I actually think the Mets are closer to being a very good team than most, but they need to get out of their own way.

do you rhink the shorter season cheapens it?
Mark P
2:46
It can't help but be weird, but I'm not sure "cheapens" is the right word.

Put it this way....the 1982 NFL season was only nine games long due to a players' strike.  I'm sure at the time, fans felt the season was "cheapened" and that Washington's Super Bowl title that year should've had an asterisk.

But now here in 2020, we just look in the record and say "oh look, Washington won Super Bowl 17" without the context.
2:47
The point is, we've had shortened seasons in other sports (including baseball) before, and though the circumstances of 2020 are more bizarre than ever, we're still getting games played.  I'm going to enjoy it for what it is.

Do you think Castellanos will opt out after this season if he stays hot or is it too big of a risk in the current financial situation?
Mark P
2:50
It's an interesting case, since Castellanos is now almost at the top of the free agent pile since Betts is off the market.  If the DH will become a reality in the NL, I can see him deciding to take the risk and seeing if he can land a new deal to top the current three years/$48MM he has remaining with the Reds
2:51
But that said, it's also a possibility he decides to stand pat on the $48MM he has rather than risk getting shortchanged if it's a wonky free agent market

Mychal Givens or Andrew Chafin or both make sense for the Cubs?
Mark P

Sure, any type of bullpen help would be appreciated in Chicago right now.  Though the Cubs have been able to weather the storm of their reliever problems incredibly well

Last year, AL teams (with a DH) scored an averaged of 4.88 runs per game; NL teams (without a DH) averaged 4.78 runs per game.  Disparities in bating average and slugging percentage were similarly minimal.  So if pitchers can't hit, apparently the guys hitting in their stead can't either.  Why should we have a universal DH for 1/10 of a run per team per game?
Mark P

I'm not sure about longer-term stats, but my first instinct is that the 2019 numbers may be skewed since about half of the AL was openly tanking.

That's all for me today, thanks for the questions!  Next week should mark the return of the normal Sunday night chat, so stay tuned
